Unless you own every console and a gaming quality PC, you're missing out on good games no matter what. So everyone is going to miss some games.
It still surprises me how many people don't understand this.
This is pretty much the /thread here. I love how people forget that a platform without games is only an overpriced blu-ray/dvd player at most in the case of consoles and just a work station and overpriced internet browser in the case of pc's.

Very cute trolling. I almost fell for it.
I'm only limit myself to say that this reminds me of Moviebob blaming the FPS genre for everything wrong with games today.

They're still the minority, moreso now than ever.
They're just a much louder more obnoxious minority.

240 when I got it, bought it second hand intact from someone who was upgrading.
Meaning that you likely got it under market price, and thus can not be used as an example of cost comparisons. If it works for you, that's fine. But it doesn't mean it's cost efficient for everyone. According to the googles the average person is going to spend about 600$ on a new computer.

and that you own two consoles. If we assume a dead median price we have 500 for your consoles and 240 for your PC making it 740 which is to say basically the same cost for your 3 mostly redundant systems compared to my one. Which is also just the case for you(Because if we take googles apparent median computer purchase then you're at about 1100$ compared to my high of 800.

GunsmithKitten said:
4) Steam sales allow you to get games for extremely cheap a few months after release.
If your PC can handle them. Mine can't.
Which is the reality and not the hypothetical reality we are discussing. Meaning that you basically paid almost the exact same amount as I did, except now I get cheaper games and thus come out ahead.

GunsmithKitten said:
Yea, I ain't factoring in piracy if that's what you're going at.
Downloading abandonware is not piracy, so no, that's not what I'm getting at. And most games worth anything that aren't abandonware have already been ported. The only noteworthy exception I can think of would be Red Dead Redemption.

GunsmithKitten said:
There's also another factor at play here; I don't live alone, and my GF and I both use the computer for a whole slew of work related activities. Hence, having a console means the gaming isn't tied up.
This is the only argument you have made that holds any water. And it only does so in a very limited way. I already explained in a previous post but essentially the more focused the industry becomes the more economically efficient they will be at building for that system. Ignoring the fact that most people bought L.A. Noire for 60$ and I got it for 5$; if you reduce the pricing on single PCs(as more competition always does) you make it economically viable for people like you to simply have two PCs that can accomplish everything, rather than 3 pieces of restrictive sets of hardware. Even if you had to pay more to get a PC(which is only true in a very very limited set of circumstances) you are going to very quickly(if everyone actually did it) over the course of a few years lower the market rates far below the current conditions allowing the customers to keep more money and the developers to spend more developing games instead of buying licenses.

The opposite does not hold true. If we invest more in consoles, PCs don't simply disappear they simply become specialized as well. The computing power is still there it just isn't being harnessed in a utilitarian manner thus the costs go up slightly for each individual system(as manufacturing is split) and we become forced to buy both at increased prices. So the question is would you like to spend a bunch of extra money over your lifetime or a little bit extra for now to drive down the prices.

Of course that's all game theory and no one will follow it because people are either stupid or distrustful of eachother(As it only actually works that way if the majority of people switch to it.) And it also only applies to you and select other people in this manner. Because as I pointed out according to our collective math, the average person still benefits more from buying a computer.

People need to feel like they are superior, and having a thing that's even a tiny bit better than your thing means that they can act superior. I game primarily on console, just because it's something I'm more comfortable with, but that doesn't stop me from booting up my PC whenever a game I want is available exclusively for it. Anybody that wants to throw a label on themselves and claim to have a better system, no matter what it is, is a complete and total tool, and should not be taken seriously by any means.

That said, I personally despise PC gamers the most out of all the fanboy groups, they are a bunch of pretentious, superiority complex having twats that should go die in a fire. Just because your games are a little shinier doesn't mean your choices are better than mine you ****. I thought graphics didn't matter guys, so why on earth do you feel the need to flaunt your superior engines every ten seconds?
This, just this.

OT: I never really cared about the whole "Console wars" thing since it just seems like a pissing contest between two very small segments of two otherwise reasonable demographics, whining children on consoles, and elitist PC gamers who would castrate you if you weren't running your game on anything that is not a PC. Thankfully the Escapist does not seem to harbor these two groups.

Agree with the general feel of this post.
I'm a big PC and Retro gamer, got 100+ titles to my steam acct. and I own a N64 with 50+ carts. but I still don't understand the amount of hatred between the platforms. I'd love to be able to play games against friends on more modern games when they come over, but PC doesn't do split-screen all that well. Hence why I'll invest in a PS3 within the next few weeks.

Of course there are pros and cons to PC and consoles. just as there are in any argument. But what I want the most, is for a developer to breach the gap and make games able to play multi-player cross-platform. It may never happen, but it would be really interesting and awesome if does.

Generally speaking most gamers wont, for instance give death threats to opposite users. But as in every other aspect of the world at the moment, there are always extremists that take things too far and ruin things for everyone.

"Why can't we be friends, why can't we be friends..."

this is all very stupid(the discussion i mean, there probably are idiots who would hate you for your choice in breakfast)
oh and i have a completely off-topic question: why does nobody ever factor the lower cost of games on a PC into the hardware price discussion? i mean newly released PC titles are 50?, console titles are 60? so if i buy a lot of games i will have payed less total for games and hardware after x years.

also: thank you people who kept this console generation alive, you slowed down PC hardware development and made this much more affordable.

Egh like what you like sir, I PC game because I'm poor. XD
Console games tend to do me up the arse for a decent time where I can pick up a handful of indie games on the PC for next to nothing... not hard to see which one wins. My PC is good but I sacrificed nearly a year of social activity and snack food to contribute to it's monetary justification. So I feel I kind of owe it to myself also.

On the plus side I'm slimmer! ...Lonely but slim. Kinda balances out ish.

Consoles can be great fun also and I still play PS2 when I feel like slobbing around with an old game.

I dunno man, I'm really surprised that people make fun of your console when you play Warhammer. I mean there is nerdy and then there is... Yeah, Warhammer is one of those things that is a huge red flag to girls. Seriously.

Despite your pony avatar I completely agree with everything written in your post.

Consoles just cater to peoples` stupidity and laziness and can be used as a metaphor for everything wrong in the world.

PC is superior because it has a mouse and keyboard with better graphics and Steam and more RAM and a better video card and a cool as processor and...
Sorry. Couldn't do the rest of that without laughing.[footnote]Actually, I just ran out of PC benefits. :p[/footnote]

You could (COULD!) be over reacting when PC gamers point out flaws consoles have against PCs, however, if you're not, it shouldn't be too hard to ignore them. These people could just be trying to justify the $600-$1000 they spent on a gaming computer that they currently only have 1 game for or they could just be "on the bandwagon" with all the other "cool and elite PC gamers."

(I own only a PC, but play on console and my friend's house all the time.)

Looks like only I can claim total victory in the brutal platform wars because I own both consoles and a PC!

(Basks in his infinite glory)

That way I can play the games I like on the PS3 (generally RPGs and FPSs) and play the games I like on the computer (RTSs and online FPSs like Red Orchestra).

I think many of these PC elitists act in a arrogant condescending manner simply because they enjoy getting a rise out console gamers rather than actually caring about what sort of hardware someone else uses (although this can cut both ways with console gamers throwing around "elitist" just to get a rise out of PC gamers). People seem to invest quite a lot of emotion in what is a really trivial matter. Why can't we just get over the logos and technical specs and just focus on the gaming medium itself. Honestly, why would I care about how some stranger plays a video game? It's absurd.

When it comes to gaming, the only time I get genuinely annoyed is when a multiplatform title has not been properly optimized for the PC. However, this is clearly not the fault of console gamers, it is the fault of the developers/publishers and the market forces which compel them. Also, we have seen a number of times this generation that the PC is not unique to this problem, as cross-console titles often fail to provide optimal gaming experiences (eg. Skyrim on PS3).

So...I forget where I was was going with this...we need to just come together as fellow gamers and focus our hatred not at each other but at...people who play sports...those god-damned jocktards need to be taken down a peg.

I know the feeling, I always have to paraphrase my discussions with my mates with me being a 'dirty PS3 console player'. I work at my computer, if I could play there too I'd never get any work done and I love the PS3 exclusives I do get. Performace and graphical superiority (that I don't put that much clout into noticing) aren't that great of a selling point to me.

As with other things in life, if someone is saying mean things to you because of your choices and opinions, you should ignore them if possible, and fight them if they oppress you. 'Couse maybe I'm just an America and that's my rebellious nature talking.

It really is a sad thing.
Though I may be primarily a PC gamer, I'm the first to consider the merits of console gaming. It's inexpensive (for the system itself, anyway), far more widespread (at least among my peers), and relatively free of crappy ports (I'm looking at you, Bioshock 2). Also, I've noticed a sort of irony present in the malicious posts of most console maligners. The kind of people who accuse console gamers of being too "casual" are generally not the same people who actually get into the more technical side of PC gaming (building, under the hood stuff, ect.). The only difference between a gamer who buys a PC off the shelf and a console gamer is the money they're willing to spend on hardware, so there is really not a huge difference as to how they experience gaming. I don't think that they're able to understand the drawbacks and advantages of the systems any further than polygons and pixels rendered.

You can't afford an extra like 600$ over 5 years? Man that's a tight budget. Time for a revolution then, death to the bourgeois.

This is just something I've been getting alot of for about a year now.

I never noticed PC gaming was at this level until a year or so ago. I new it was there but I thought consoles was where it was at because I only used my PC for RTS games. However the gap between consoles and PC gets bigger as time goes on and more people switch to PC gaming. Damn right shame too, means no-one will buy the next gen of consoles.

Anyway the point is I feel like I've got this army of PC gamers bashing my xbox now. Everywhere I look PC gamers always seem to do their gosh damn hardest to make people realise what a 'poor' gaming choice consoles are. I'm constantly reminded about my horrible system, over-priced games, dated tech and such. Sorry but I don't have the time to join the superior beings that are PC gamers. My home PC is downstairs and I'd have to build one myself...which isn't gonna happen because I play 40k and that is ridiculously expensive.

Yes I know the PC is the better platform, I have for years, I don't need to be reminded by stupid comments on youtube videos that say "I can't take Roosterteeth seriously when they play on console" and such. Every forum, site and such I visit advocates PC gaming and makes it seem like consoles are the reason for everything bad in the industry.

I guess what I'm trying to say is I feel the gaming community is against me, that somehow me owning a console makes me a stupid or bad person who isn't a gamer and I should be constantly reminded of my systems failures. Is that the plan? Beat down console gamers until they can't take it and buy PC?

Does anyone feel the same? (likely its a majority of PC gamers on this site)
Does anyone completely and utterly disagree with me?
This isn't an angry rant just an observation that ticks me off a little.
We?re just trying to help you to lead a happy and fulfilling life. PC loves you and he wants you to come home where you belong. PC will forgive you for being a dirty xbox heretic. The P in PC stands for peace. I forget what the C stands for but I think it has something to do with having lots of sex.

You know, I tend to find the opposite. I see more console players running around and shouting "PC Elitist" and "At least I didn't spend 3K on my console", among other crap far more often then I see PC players saying "Lol, consoles are so weak. They suck". Why do we always get picked on by console gamers?

You know, maybe its not PC gamers, but a bunch of idiots on the Internet acting like, well, a bunch of idiots on the Internet.

You run into both kinds all the time. Most of each group, at least in my experience, is reasonable. Console players recognize their hardware is inferior, and that its the fact that they can't be bothered Googling what to do to make a PC that is their main barrier of entry, and PC players acknowledge that you don't need to be bothered Googling what to do to play a game and have fun.

You do, however, run into idiots on both sides who claim that PCs cost a small fortune and has to upgrade every few weeks, and is impossible to play on because of bugs and drivers, or that not having time/wanting to build a PC makes you a stupid person. To use such people as representatives of an entire, rather wide and varied, group of people is, quite frankly, disingenuous.
