If I took Yahtzee's advice I wouldn't be playing video games at all, because I usually only play JRPGs and a few of the games he's rated poorly. I like him, he's funny, but I don't take his advice.

Funny how we respect Yahtzee so much.

If he told us to take our shoes off right then and there , most of us will.
I find your avatar to be very fitting for that statement.

I have had this one idea for a game in my head

here's a brief summary

A virus almost wiped out the entire human race, but luckily a company created an intravenous cure, which requires daily replacement to avoid death. Due to the amount of power the company has over the world, they now have almost complete control over the work force and all parts of life and have recreated civilization in one giant, behemoth city referred to as the"citadel". There is a guerilla warfare group whose main goal is to get rid of the company's monopoly on the cure, to stay under the grid they have developed syringe like devices, permanently attached to their arm, which they use to drain the blood of enemies in order to stay alive.

That's the basic premise, the main character is obviously going to be on the rebel side, I am also thinking of making the plot twist be that, the virus was created by the company and was designed to be shortlived and was used as a plot to get the entire world addicted to their "cure".

This is what happens when I have too much spare time
The first thing that struck me was that it seemed a bit like Red Faction

Anyway, I have an additional idea. You play as two characters, changing each level. One is from the Guerilla side, the other from the Company. This would end in one character killing the other.

Needs more origionality, it sound too simple.

I'm working on a story right now called Nerd Hero, about a comicbook/videogame nerd who gets super powers during some unexplained world wide phenominon.

Of cours his first thought is - FIGHT. CRIME.

To often aweful or fatal reuslts. Example - What happens when you accidentally use your heat vision on someone? Their face melts off, of course.

I dream of making a true 'superman' game, without being held back by the Superman mythos itself.

I remember Yahtzee saying in an interview (Note, Not directly quoted) "Write a book, then make a game out of it."

Let's actually do that. Writers of the escapist, write a book, show it to anyone with some good skills with game making, and let's go!

My one is about aliens invading Russia, but it would probably be like silent hill.

Hmm, I always thought that it was too much like bioshock, but I guess the anti-fascism and anarchist mentality is a lot like red faction

I like your two characters idea, but it would probably mean that the game can't have any RPG elements

well the problem with that is the same problem as why the harry potter movies sucked or most other books to films

if you made a book into the gasem youd still have the same problem of people not using the whole story

imagine writing the "best book ever" and then peter moleneuxe (i think i got it wrong) tried to make a game out of it

I'd rather get razor wire, drag it into my mouth and pull the other end out of my ass and floss myself to death before I listen to everything Yahtzee sa- oh fuck.

I really don't think a book can translate to a game well, unless you really want another MGS 4.

Doesn't quite sound colorful enough for Yahtzee.

If I understand the point of the thread correctly, we are advocating the direct translation of a non-visual, non-interactive medium into a video game. I'm not sure this is a recipe for success.

That said, if I look past the obvious bit, the underlying assertion is that the story of the game ought to be a driving force behind the entire process. Currently, story is generally a later addition to a design process. In the most usual circumstance, a developer has a vague idea of a setting and then they create all sorts of interesting mechancis, enemies and allies to populate a world. At some point, often months if not years into development, a story is written to tie all the pieces together.

Add "and myself" after "all" and it's dark and edgy!
Disillusioned youth, yada yada; they're not psychopaths if they hate themselves too apparently. ^^

lets have stephen king write a story and have valve make a game out of it, that would rock.

But the cutscenes and dialogue would take like forever!

Somebody should make a REAL video game out of the BOOK of Fight Club. That way we could forget all about that crummy movie tie in game which has nothing to do with the real message of Fight Club.

That and Project Mayhem would make a good sandbox game.

A friend and I have been working on something sort of like this. Basically, I started writing a story, he got involved and started writing other bits, then he started using RPG Maker to make a game based on it.

The last time I saw it, he'd made some of the opening scene, and an area containing an easter egg with him in it.
