I'm not entirely sure why this is the case. If I had to hazard a guess, it would be so you don't confuse humans with anything else even on first glance. Several creatures use "H" as their icon, most notably horses. Horses are often used by humans, as animals to carry their trade goods or mounts for their soldiers in sieges. You could easily confuse a human with a horse since they are so often found together. I can't think of any other creature that uses "U" as an icon though, so there's no cause for confusion there.
OK, so I'm right now downloading the Bentgirder tutorial fort. Wish me luck.
EDIT: I'm very confused.
I installed WinZip in order to open Bentgirder, and have no idea what to do next. I try to open Bentgirder, a metric shitton of stuff appears in WinZip and I have no idea what to do with any of it. Apparently I'm meant to expand the zip into the same directory as dwarf fortress, but I have no idea what any of that means - I don't know how to expand something and I don't know what a directory is.

Is there some forum post for the tutorial itself? Because I haven't used this tutorial so I have no clue about what would be required in setting it up properly. If I had to hazard a guess, you're supposed to place the file you downloaded in your Dwarf Fortress save folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\Dwarf Fortress\data\save). Though that's assuming all you downloaded is a region. Again, I never used this myself. Sorry.

The problem is just my own sheer uselessness with computers. I tried to open it, I was told I needed WinZip. I installed WinZip, and when I tried to open this Bentgirder thing (which is a pre-set-up DF thing) a whole bunch of files appeared in WinZip and I don't know which button to press.

Well, at least you didn't give up. On the subject of woodcutters, I usually don't bother dumping embark points into that skill as its not really necessary. Then again it does depend on the starting build you do.
if the owner of this thread/LP is agreeable , I would like to post a great tutorial which tells you how best to get started all the way down to the hotkeys. Without it I had given up,but now my little fort is doing very well.

As I had predicted, the humans have sent a trade caravan. Judging by the look of them, their most likely from the Kingdoms of Mirth. Not surprising, since they are one of the closest civilizations to us. They've been an ally of the Relieved Craft for many years, aiding us in our constant war against the Luxurious Snakes. Glad to see that have decided to help Reveredtour develop into a prosperous fortress!
Kraken's notes: Humans are one of the 4 major civilizations of Dwarf Fortress, and probably the most helpful aside from dwarves. Like elves, they live on the surface; however humans build towns out of wood and stone and actually develop some semblance of a proper society unlike the tree huggers. Humans are also much more sensible in trading, as they will accept any trade goods you offer them. They typically sell you above ground goods and bronze weapons, both of which can be quite useful if you lack the capacity to produce them on your own.
However, humans in Dwarf Fortress are quite sensitive. If you fail to protect their diplomats and trade caravans, they will become quite angry with you. They will then respond by sending their military to wipe out your fortress. Having more honor than the lowly elf, humans do not send ambushes, only sieges. These sieges typically consist of humans armed in bronze gear riding various mounts, sometimes accompanied by mundane war beasts such as grizzly bears (yes, using grizzly bears for war is normal in the DF universe. Keep in mind that elves will ride unicorns and goblins have giant fucking birds). They can actually pose quite a threat due to their size and quality equipment, though because they only siege it's much easier to prepare for them. Being more useful and more powerful than elves, humans are typically treated with more respect.
Unfortunately, they have arrived while Reveredtour is undergoing extensive construction. So the first thing they had to do was sidestep the giant hole in front of the entrance.
I hope that doesn't give them a negative impression of Reveredtour.

I overheard some unfamiliar voices today. They didn't sound like dwarves, so I was both confused and worried. I noticed two mysterious figures standing across the moat. They appeared to be arguing over something, but I can't imagine what. But they most definitely were not humans.
One of them was obviously a kobold, but I'm not sure what the other was. It was taller, and its body was covered in a long silk cloak. I can only guess that this was also a thief, though why it would be wearing a silk cloak doesn't make much sense to me. Not exactly stealthy. I called for the Immortal Rags to come drive away the filth. The two thieves, upon realizing they had been exposed, turned to run. In their haste, one of them tripped over another cloaked figure who had also apparently been sneaking into Reveredtour.
All 3 of the thieves managed to escape into the wastes though. I can only guess that they had been following the human caravan to Reveredtour. Upon reflection, I'm wondering if those cloak figured were actually goblin scouts...

Note to self; in the future, I should be as specific as possible with my instructions when haulers have to handle dangerous goods.
A warthog had blundered into one of our cage traps. I had no use for this creature, so it has just been sitting in the stockpile for about a month now. I figured the humans might appreciate the exotic animal, so I ordered its cage to be hauled to the depot. Now maybe this was just because the hauler who picked up the cage was Monom, but my orders were apparently interpreted as "bring the cage to the depot", not "bring the warthog to the depot". As a result, Monom released the warthog from its wooden prison, not realizing that said warthog was feral and quite angry.
The confused beast, surprised to have been let out of the cage, began running around chasing various workers. This caught the attention of the Immortal Rags, as they were only a few feet away from the stockpile. This resulted in the entire military barreling down a narrow hallway in pursuit of the terrified warthog.
This ended about as well as one would expect for the warthog.
Poor thing. It was an unnecessary casualty of misinterpreted hauling instructions.
3rd Limestone, 1052, Early Autumn
I'm starting to notice a common pattern here. Every few days someone shouts about some foul beast in the caverns, the military goes to slay it, and nothing comes of it. I'm guessing that's going to happen again, since one of the mechanics is yelling about some kind of zombies again.
Kraken's notes: Kruelers could actually be considered somewhat threatening for a first layer cavern dweller. They are inorganic creatures made out of tin, which is not a particularly durable metal but is still a metal none the less. This means they are immune to most forms of pain, making them able to endure blows that would cripple other beasts. However, trained soldiers should have little problem with them unless they are forced to fight with their fists. Kruelers can be tamed, though they yield little upon being butchered so their only use is as slightly more durable cannon fodder.
4th Limestone, 1052, Early Autumn
Seems I was right. Apparently the zombie was some kind of weird little spiked ball. I've never seen one before, though according to the bestiary they're called kruelers. Who names these things? Anyways, the military disposed of the krueler by swarming it and beating it with their fists until it vanished. I imagine this was somewhat painful considering these creatures are apparently made out of solid metal, but they didn't complain.
6th Limestone, 1052, Early Autumn
Ugh, more shouting coming from the caverns. I'm guessing the workers are being menaced by a particularly terrifying zombie frog or something. Just because something is a zombie does not necessarily mean its deadly. Still, best to send the immortal rags down just to be safe. I'm sure this will be just as uneventful as all the other encounters in recent days.
If you see any creature mentioned here that doesn't have a wiki page, it is either procedurally generated (like a night creature) or modded. In this case, yes, a wannamingo is another mod creature. It's not a megabeast or even semimegabeast, just a particular vicious member of the creatures that dwell in the abyss. Which is why an engraving of it marching through a place on the surface perplexes me. It has no reason to come out from underground.

Oh of course its fine! I might even had it to the OP if I think it really helps. Doesn't hesitate to post material here that could help new people to learn the game, as its one of my goals with this LP.
Alright then, I think it's a tad outdated but it still seemed to translate well and me,having no experience besides this and boatmurder and having opened the game and going "uhhhh... What the hell?" I found this, which basically got me playing instead of hitting random buttons and trying to build a fortress in the middle of nowhere. and now I have a semi-functional fortress. note the semi, its the key word.

EDIT: oh I almost forgot, I'm only on page 3 of I think 8(but don't quote me on that) and I seem to be doing well, I dunno as it's my first game.
