More useful than a novice soap maker, for one thing.
Well both the novice and the legend end up as haulers/masons/suicide squad members in my forts, so it doesn't really matter. A dwarf that's a soap maker might as well label himself as "disposable".

Chapter 24: From the journal of Stinthad Kekimtobul

__________________________________________________

27th Malachite, 1052, Mid-Summer

Oh boy! More migrants have come to Reveredtour! I'm so happy; we're finally getting some recognition! It looks like there are at least 9 of them coming in. We need help speeding up construction, so most of them will have to work as masons until the production center is set up.

Stonesense Version [http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/5250/workshopsense.png]

Speaking of which, construction of the first parts of production center is complete. Once a few more masonry jobs are finished, we can extend these platforms to accommodate for a variety of workshops. I don't mean to boost my own ego, but I think it's a brilliant idea! Putting all the workshops and stockpiles in one area over multiple Z-levels will be quite efficient. And to think the other dwarves thought this ocean fort would never work!

1st Galena, 1052, Late Summer

Construction of various parts of the H.F.S continues. I've ordered the moat to be dug around Reveredtour to ensure its protection from outside forces.

Stonesense Version [http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/1686/moatsense.png]

Of course, we need to construct a drawbridge to span across the moat. Originally, I was going to have this bridge just be built out of more microline, but you know what I just realized looks really pretty?

Tunnel tube logs!

Stonesense Version [http://img574.imageshack.us/img574/5552/pinkashellsense.png]

Gosh, a bridge built out of those would just look fantastic! Unfortunately, we have barely any tunnel tube logs currently available, so I've ordered the woodcutters to search the crypt for any mature tunnel tubes so that we may acquire enough to build some pretty bridges! Some of the dwarves raised concerns about this being "dangerous", and that I'm delaying the construction of an important defensive structure just because I want to make it look nice. They worry too much.

Also I decided to check on how Kekmizulgar's construction we progressing. However, when I went to talk to her she was sitting in the masons workshop, doing absolutely nothing. I inquired as to why, and she said she needed cut gems. I informed her that we have no cut gems, but rough gems would work just fine. She screamed at me, saying that she NEEDS cut gems, and only cut gems. She won't listen to reason, so I'll just have to make her some.

I told Solon to cut a few gems for Kekimzulgar, but she lamented that she has no skill in gem cutting. I told her this didn't matter, as nobody in Reveredtour does. So she should just hit some gems with a chisel a few times, claim that they are cut, and then give them to Kekmizulgar. It's not like she will be able to tell the difference.

2nd Galena, 1052, Mid-Summer

Stonesense Version [http://img820.imageshack.us/img820/8311/hfsdonesense.png]

Construction of the trap corridor is finished. Now we just need a digger to come channel out the wall, creating a passage into the river. Hopefully, this will be all we need to do to get some caged hippos. If not, I'll have to go over to Plan B.

4th Galena, 1052, Late Summer

Oh god no, disaster has struck!

I don't know how, but when the diggers were making the moat they somehow collapsed part of the ground with themselves still standing on it! They plummeted down several feet before being knocked out due to the impact. I rushed over to see what had happened, but it was hard to see through all the dust. Goden was standing nearby for some reason. I asked her what had happened, and she said it was just an accident. For some reason she didn't seem to concerned with helping the poor diggers, tough maybe she was just stunned by the horror of it all. When the dust cleared, I was able to see that two diggers had been caught in the cave in, among them Atir!

I really hope that they are okay.

6th Galena, 1052, Late Summber

Well, things could be worse. The diggers are injured, but they don't appear to have sustained any life-threatening wounds. Nobody would have been able to help them if they had. We really need to get a hospital constructed. And a graveyard, now that I think about it.

On a more positive note, Kekimzulgar was satisfied with Solon's crummy cut gems and has finally begun working on her construction.

I wonder what it could be!

10th Galena, 1052, Late Summer

Kekimzulgar finally finished her artifact.

It's a, um, cabinet.

Well, okay, it's a very nice cabinet. Still, not sure why she made a cabinet. Or why she put images of that creepy hammer and that cabinet itself on it. Speaking of weird images, Goden's engravings certainly haven't gotten any better.

I'm not even sure what the heck that thing is, but she made a picture of it moving through the wastes surrounding Reveredtour. The idea that someone saw something like that anywhere near here doesn't bode well.

16th Galena, 1052, Late Summer

Rats, the hippos have completely ignored the trap corridor and remained firmly in the river. I'll have to do something provoke them into entering the cages. Here's the plan; fire harmless wooden bolts at the hippos and then lead the enraged hippos into the trap corridor. I believe this plan poses no risk to the hippos or the dwarf acting as bait, though I understand why others might hesitate to volunteer. I'm sure I'll find someone who will do it.

18th Galena, 1052, Late Summer

Oh hey, look who's here!

I think I know why you have infection problems.

The artifact hammer gets a stupidly high 500%ish damage bonus, or at least did back in 40d. I'm not sure if that still holds. I guess it does.

Also, a cabinet makes a fine weapon, though sadly using one in fortress mode doesn't happen any more.

It's not that I never make soap. I just find the idea of dedicating one dwarf to soap making pretty pointless, especially when skill doesn't factor to much into the process of making soap other than how fast your churn out bars. Which is useful for something like stone crafting when you want as many crafts as possible, but that's not the case with soap.

An artifact....cabinet. I will admit, I was a bit disapointed too. Though it is not just a cabinet! It is a cabinet...with a cabinet carved on it!

I think it's hilarious that the cabinet has an image of itself on it. Does the image also contain an image within it?

Also amusing is that hippos get the "H" designation while humans are stuck with "U".

I'm not entirely sure why this is the case. If I had to hazard a guess, it would be so you don't confuse humans with anything else even on first glance. Several creatures use "H" as their icon, most notably horses. Horses are often used by humans, as animals to carry their trade goods or mounts for their soldiers in sieges. You could easily confuse a human with a horse since they are so often found together. I can't think of any other creature that uses "U" as an icon though, so there's no cause for confusion there.

OK, so I'm right now downloading the Bentgirder tutorial fort. Wish me luck.

EDIT: I'm very confused.

I installed WinZip in order to open Bentgirder, and have no idea what to do next. I try to open Bentgirder, a metric shitton of stuff appears in WinZip and I have no idea what to do with any of it. Apparently I'm meant to expand the zip into the same directory as dwarf fortress, but I have no idea what any of that means - I don't know how to expand something and I don't know what a directory is.

Help please?

Is there some forum post for the tutorial itself? Because I haven't used this tutorial so I have no clue about what would be required in setting it up properly. If I had to hazard a guess, you're supposed to place the file you downloaded in your Dwarf Fortress save folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\Dwarf Fortress\data\save). Though that's assuming all you downloaded is a region. Again, I never used this myself. Sorry.

The problem is just my own sheer uselessness with computers. I tried to open it, I was told I needed WinZip. I installed WinZip, and when I tried to open this Bentgirder thing (which is a pre-set-up DF thing) a whole bunch of files appeared in WinZip and I don't know which button to press.

Eh, doesn't matter. I gave up on the tutorial fort anyway, I'm now just going to have a go with interwebs tutorials.

Need to remember to actually have some wood cutters next time :p

Well, at least you didn't give up. On the subject of woodcutters, I usually don't bother dumping embark points into that skill as its not really necessary. Then again it does depend on the starting build you do.

Chapter 25: From the journal of Stinthad Kekimtobul

__________________________________________________

20th Galena, 1052, Late Summer

As I had predicted, the humans have sent a trade caravan. Judging by the look of them, their most likely from the Kingdoms of Mirth. Not surprising, since they are one of the closest civilizations to us. They've been an ally of the Relieved Craft for many years, aiding us in our constant war against the Luxurious Snakes. Glad to see that have decided to help Reveredtour develop into a prosperous fortress!

Kraken's notes: Humans are one of the 4 major civilizations of Dwarf Fortress, and probably the most helpful aside from dwarves. Like elves, they live on the surface; however humans build towns out of wood and stone and actually develop some semblance of a proper society unlike the tree huggers. Humans are also much more sensible in trading, as they will accept any trade goods you offer them. They typically sell you above ground goods and bronze weapons, both of which can be quite useful if you lack the capacity to produce them on your own.

However, humans in Dwarf Fortress are quite sensitive. If you fail to protect their diplomats and trade caravans, they will become quite angry with you. They will then respond by sending their military to wipe out your fortress. Having more honor than the lowly elf, humans do not send ambushes, only sieges. These sieges typically consist of humans armed in bronze gear riding various mounts, sometimes accompanied by mundane war beasts such as grizzly bears (yes, using grizzly bears for war is normal in the DF universe. Keep in mind that elves will ride unicorns and goblins have giant fucking birds). They can actually pose quite a threat due to their size and quality equipment, though because they only siege it's much easier to prepare for them. Being more useful and more powerful than elves, humans are typically treated with more respect.
Unfortunately, they have arrived while Reveredtour is undergoing extensive construction. So the first thing they had to do was sidestep the giant hole in front of the entrance.

I hope that doesn't give them a negative impression of Reveredtour.

21st Galena, 1052, Late Summer

I overheard some unfamiliar voices today. They didn't sound like dwarves, so I was both confused and worried. I noticed two mysterious figures standing across the moat. They appeared to be arguing over something, but I can't imagine what. But they most definitely were not humans.

One of them was obviously a kobold, but I'm not sure what the other was. It was taller, and its body was covered in a long silk cloak. I can only guess that this was also a thief, though why it would be wearing a silk cloak doesn't make much sense to me. Not exactly stealthy. I called for the Immortal Rags to come drive away the filth. The two thieves, upon realizing they had been exposed, turned to run. In their haste, one of them tripped over another cloaked figure who had also apparently been sneaking into Reveredtour.

All 3 of the thieves managed to escape into the wastes though. I can only guess that they had been following the human caravan to Reveredtour. Upon reflection, I'm wondering if those cloak figured were actually goblin scouts...

23rd Galena, 1052, Late Summer

Note to self; in the future, I should be as specific as possible with my instructions when haulers have to handle dangerous goods.

A warthog had blundered into one of our cage traps. I had no use for this creature, so it has just been sitting in the stockpile for about a month now. I figured the humans might appreciate the exotic animal, so I ordered its cage to be hauled to the depot. Now maybe this was just because the hauler who picked up the cage was Monom, but my orders were apparently interpreted as "bring the cage to the depot", not "bring the warthog to the depot". As a result, Monom released the warthog from its wooden prison, not realizing that said warthog was feral and quite angry.

The confused beast, surprised to have been let out of the cage, began running around chasing various workers. This caught the attention of the Immortal Rags, as they were only a few feet away from the stockpile. This resulted in the entire military barreling down a narrow hallway in pursuit of the terrified warthog.

This ended about as well as one would expect for the warthog.

Poor thing. It was an unnecessary casualty of misinterpreted hauling instructions.

3rd Limestone, 1052, Early Autumn

I'm starting to notice a common pattern here. Every few days someone shouts about some foul beast in the caverns, the military goes to slay it, and nothing comes of it. I'm guessing that's going to happen again, since one of the mechanics is yelling about some kind of zombies again.

Kraken's notes: Kruelers could actually be considered somewhat threatening for a first layer cavern dweller. They are inorganic creatures made out of tin, which is not a particularly durable metal but is still a metal none the less. This means they are immune to most forms of pain, making them able to endure blows that would cripple other beasts. However, trained soldiers should have little problem with them unless they are forced to fight with their fists. Kruelers can be tamed, though they yield little upon being butchered so their only use is as slightly more durable cannon fodder.

4th Limestone, 1052, Early Autumn

Seems I was right. Apparently the zombie was some kind of weird little spiked ball. I've never seen one before, though according to the bestiary they're called kruelers. Who names these things? Anyways, the military disposed of the krueler by swarming it and beating it with their fists until it vanished. I imagine this was somewhat painful considering these creatures are apparently made out of solid metal, but they didn't complain.

6th Limestone, 1052, Early Autumn

Ugh, more shouting coming from the caverns. I'm guessing the workers are being menaced by a particularly terrifying zombie frog or something. Just because something is a zombie does not necessarily mean its deadly. Still, best to send the immortal rags down just to be safe. I'm sure this will be just as uneventful as all the other encounters in recent days.

If you see any creature mentioned here that doesn't have a wiki page, it is either procedurally generated (like a night creature) or modded. In this case, yes, a wannamingo is another mod creature. It's not a megabeast or even semimegabeast, just a particular vicious member of the creatures that dwell in the abyss. Which is why an engraving of it marching through a place on the surface perplexes me. It has no reason to come out from underground.

Oh of course its fine! I might even had it to the OP if I think it really helps. Doesn't hesitate to post material here that could help new people to learn the game, as its one of my goals with this LP.
