That's odd. Even though dwarvs don't like drinking the same alcohol a lot (most dwarves in Reveredtour have negative thoughts related to this, but it's mad minor so I ignore it), I've never seen them prefer water to booze. Even when there's a well two feet away from them, they'd rather scale mt.doom if their is booze at the top.

As for the underground farm, the problem there is a common mistake. You can't just farm on any piece of soil or rock found underground. It has to be covered in mud before you can plant stuff on it. There's many different ways to go about doing this, so check the wiki if you need help. However, the caverns always have a permenant layer of mud on them. So if you go down there, you can set up a farm right away. This is my prefred method, as it is simple and works across all embarks. Only downside is sometimes the terrain isn't on your side. Oh, and the monsters.
I think both things have changed since the previous version then. I played with an old version that came with that well-known tutorial for quite some time, only recently got the latest one when I got a new computer.

Right now I've fixed the problem by just making an above-ground farm. Not very dwarfish, but at least they yield enough wild strawberries and prickle berries to brew a healthy amount of booze from. No pig tail though, so I have to import all my cloth.

Shame that an above-ground farm means MANY interuptions though, despite my entrance (as I lack a hillside I just dug stairs down), farms and barracks being surrounded by walls. So I've made my military squad commit raccoon and, as I type this, wolf genocide. Well, attempted wolf genocide. My squad is trying to catch them, but as their speeds match they just end up running circles around a lake. Queue Benny Hill theme.

Some questions by the way:
1: I can't get Stonesense to work. It's stuck on Connecting to DF.
2: How to view the combat log? I'd like to revel in the details of the slaughtering of many a raccoon, goblin and wolf.

I wouldn't know hot to help you there really. If I had to hazard a guess, it's because you downloaded stonesense but didn't update one of the files needed to get it to run with the new version. Check the thread for stonesense in the modding section of the bay 12 forums. You should find the answer there.

2: How to view the combat log? I'd like to revel in the details of the slaughtering of many a raccoon, goblin and wolf.
Just hit the 'r' key, and then click enter on any combat report.

Have a question for you. What version of DF are you using? Since its not plagued with slow downs and crash stories?
The most recent one. Dwarf Fortress is a glitchy game to be sure, but it rarely crashes. New Vegas crashes far more often than Dwarf Fortress does, which is pretty pathetic.

I decided to take a leaf out of Kraken's book and just remove aquifers. You just go into Dwarf Fortress- raw- objects and delete the [Aquifer] entries. MUCH, much better.

Incidentally, this was in the most recent version. I had until a week or so ago, been working with a version about a year out of date. Most notable change- Everything moves about 20 times faster. I've gotten to what took me about a day of playtime in a few hours.

Also.. I had a thought last night- You haven't quite gotten into the spirit of Dwarf Fortress until you've started trying to do things like replicate Splash Mountain or construct a lava shooting ice statue on top of your fort.

Yet my game crashes whenever i embark at all. I haven't been able to play a real game for months. Not to mention stonesense doesn't work with .18.
I don't know why your game would crash everytime you embark. Have you tried redownloading it? That seems like a weird problem.

Yes. I also have problems changing from PAUSE to RESUME. It seems if i make the map too big it crashes. Problem is the only size i can make it is ridiculously small. I might as well not even bother. It crashes constantly.
Well I wish I had some way to help you. but I don't know what the problem could be. Only place you could really ask is on the Bay12 forums.

Well, it seems I was wrong. Reveredtour isn't being attacked by goblins.

We're being attacked by something else instead.

The suspense is killing me.

Hopefully it doesn't kill the random plebeian I'm requesting to have named after yours truly.

Another wow here:

I just had a Forgotten Beast...

My (underarmed and underprepared) population went from 45ish to 12 in a matter of minutes, during which, everyone in the fortress tried to swarm the beast, causing this little gem:

Eventually it died from being scratched in the brain by a kitten.

Anyway, now I have to decide if it's worth carrying on with twelve dwarves (at least 3 of whom are completely incapacitated) and a wrecked fortress full of corpses and blood. Opinions?

EDIT: Never mind, a couple of dwarves died of injury/starvation/drowning(after I tried to clean the fortress with a river), then one of them started punching their brains out with her fists until she was the only one left.

EDIT 2: Noooo! She's moved onto the kittens!

I actually really like the fight that happens in this update, if only because of who ends up getting the kill on the invader.

Chapter 46: From the journal of Stinthad Kekimtobul

__________________________________________________

1st Hematite, 1054, Early Summer

I'm pretty sure it's summer now. What better way to celebrate the end of spring than with elves being jerks and a cave monster tearing apart our best soldier? I'm still heading down to haven, but I forgot how long it takes to get down there.

2nd Hematite, 1054, Early Summer

Well this just keeps getting worse. When I made it down to haven, I saw the damage Rofa had dealt. Blood was splattered everywhere, body parts were strewn across the floor, and the farm plots had been torn apart. I'll have to get the farmers to rebuild those. But when I went to look for Alath, I heard a voice cry to me from the corner.

Zulban: "Stinthad, please help me..."
Stinthad: "Zulban? I thought you were going to the hospital!"
Zulban: "I'm missing a foot! I can't feel my legs, and I'm starting to see things! I'm imagining there's a horrible monster behind you right now!"
Stinthad: "That's not a horrible monster! It's Ingiz!"
Zulban: "Just help me!"
Stinthad: "But...Alath is-"
Zulban: "You're just going to ignore me?!?"

Dammit, I can't do that. But...somebody else will help Alath, right?

[b4th Hematite, 1054, Early Summer[/b]

Well I got Zulban to the hospital. He's unconscious right now, and his injuries are really bad. I want to go help Alath, but I find it hard to do so when Zulban so clearly needs my help right now. I mean, surely someone else is helping him by now? I may be the only doctor, but tons of other dwarves have orders to recover the wounded. And how could the farmers just ignore Alath? Yeah, I'm sure someone is carrying him here right now!

Pictured: Alath dying and a farmer who does not give a fuck.

Oh, there's Goden! I'll ask her!

Stinthad: "Hey Goden, can you do me a favor? I'm pretty sure someone has to have helped Alath by now, but it wouldn't hurt to check, right? So could you maybe go down there and look for him while I tend to Zulban?"
Goden: "No."
Stinthad: "Tha- wait, what?"
Goden: "I said no."
Stinthad: "But you're not even working right now!"
Goden: "Yes, and I still don't care. Now you go down there and haul that useless soldier yourself, if you consider a cripple worth keeping alive."

How can Goden be so cruel?!? Alath has done so much for Reveredtour, and now she's just going to toss him aside? It's like I'm the only person here with a heart.

7th Hematite, 1054, Early Summer

You know, I've been thinking. As horrific as Rofa was, ultimately he's still just a really big animal. And here in Reveredtour, we eat all sorts of animals. Last night I dined on some delicious crawling carp with oyster juice poured on top. So what's to say we can't eat Rofa? I mean, he's huge! Just think of all the meat we could get from him!

Of course, being so big means it would take a dwarf ages to haul his corpse all the way up to the butcher's shop on the surface.

So we'll bring the butcher's shop down to Rofa!

9th Hematite, 1054, Early Summer

Oh dear, what was that? It sounded like someone collapsed a section of the caverns. Did the dwarves already set up the hatchling disposal platform? No, it's too soon for that. I have no idea what that was, and I can't go check now. I hope nobody else got hurt now...

10th Hematite, 1054, Early Summer

Okay, I got Alath to the hospital. I set him down in the bed next to Zulban, figuring he'd like to be next to another soldier. I looked around the hospital to make sure Erush and Zulban were still okay, when I noticed someone new lying in bed.

Stinthad: "What's your name?"
Shorast: "Shorast Kovestast."
Stinthad: "Okay, well Shorast, I hate to be rude but I'm going to have to ask you to leave. I've told you all numerous times that the hospital is for patients only. The dormitories are right below here, so just go sleep there."
Shorast: "I am a patient idiot. I got hurt fighting that damn alligator beast."
Stinthad: "You did? You look fine."
Shorast: "Maybe when compared to those two morons, but just because I didn't fuck up majorly doesn't mean I don't deserve treatment. Now fix my leg."

Stinthad: "It's barely hurt!"
Shorast: "Blah blah blah. I don't care how bad it is. I don't want to deal with the pain this causes when training. So I'm not leaving until you fix it."
Stinthad: "Sorry, I'll get you when I can, but the others need my help more right now."
Shorast: "Bah, well if you're not going to fix my leg now, then go fetch me some booze while I wait."
Stinthad: "Hospital patients only receive water."
Shorast: "WHAT? This is idiotic! Get me some damn booze!"
Stinthad: "Look, I have to perform surgery, so could you keep it down?"
Shorast: "Less talk, more beer!"
Stinthad: "Lorbam, knock him out. I don't want to deal with this right now."

Maybe having Lorbam bash him on the head (lightly!) was a bit cruel, but he was being so rude! He should some consideration for the soldiers that are on the verge of death. Yet he's whining for me to get him some booze and fix his leg that is barely even hurt. Some people are just horribly rude. I have the feeling he's only here so he can get out of training.

15th Hematite, 1054, Early Summer

It seems we are running out of microline.

Again.

I guess we consume a lot more of it than I realized. I'll just have the diggers cut out some more.

But I think this cluster of microline is coming close to being exhausted. Should probably find a new one close to the surface to use.

16th Hematite, 1054, Early Summer

There are great monsters living near Reveredtour. You can hear their howls echoing through the wastes often. Sometimes you see the bigger ones moving around off in the distance. I've never seen them come close to Reveredtour. They always seem to ignore us. Either they're afraid or they don't care about our presence. I figured if they hadn't bothered to attack us by now, they never would.

I was wrong.

Kraken's notes: Ettins are semimegabeasts, which are powerful and threatening monsters that can attack your fortress regardless of its location. Much like enemy civs, they will travel across the globe to crush you. They also frequently attack civilizations during world generation, so many of them have already built a reputation before you even start your fort. Ettins are similar to giants and cyclopes, in that they are all massive humanoids. Ettins stand apart by having two heads, but this doesn't really mean much. An ettin can potentially survive having a head being cut off, but the blood loss will probably kill them outright anyways.

However while they aren't significantly different from their cousins, ettins are still just as threatening as they are. Ettins are 133 times the size of a dwarf. When you're that big, you don't need fancy abilities or special powers to beat enemies. You just step on them. Not to suggest that Ettins are nightmares to deal with it, but they can be a serious problem. And if you don't have a decent military or trap defense, you pretty much have no choice but to seal up the fort.

16th Hematite, 1054, Early Summer

My god, that thing is huge. I've ordered everyone back inside, obviously. Some civilians are working on the bridges across the moat, but I think they'll get back in time. Something is delaying the ettin. It isn't advancing as fast as it could be. I think it's, um, arguing with itself.

Head 1: "NO! I DON'T WANT TO FIGHT THE DWARVES! THEY'LL KILL US!"
Head 2: "Quit whining you coward, we already agreed upon this last night. Now stop holding us back and get moving!"
Head 1: "But they're not weak! Let's go kill elves instead. They can't fight back."
Head 2: "I'm sick of killing elves! Besides the giants want their way with them this year. Now shut up and move! Dwarves are even smaller than elves! You just step on them, and they're gone."
Head 1: "But their weapons are cold and sharp! Can cut skin! Let's go back before it's too late!"
Head 2: "We're attacking now!"
Head 1: "NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!"

Quite a bizarre creature. Well we have no choice but to wait for it to attack. The military will be ready this time though. Maybe that's why I'm so calm about this. This ettin won't have the element of surprise on its side, unlike Rofa who was crawling through the underbelly of Reveredtour before we could react properly.

Still, I think I'll watch from the hospital just to be safe.

16th Hematite, 1054, Early Summer

All right, pretty much the entire military has gathered at the entrance. This is where the battle will take place. By having the entire military swarm the ettin all at once, they will surely bring him down. Now the battle is occurring close to the meeting hall, but the civilians have enough sense to get out of the way when trouble starts. So now we just need to sit and wait, which shouldn't take very lo-

Monom: "Hey! Can anyone here me! Why am I the only one out here? I thought we were working on these bridges? Right?"
Stinthad: "MONOM WHAT ARE YOU DOING OVER THERE?!? WE'RE IN LOCKDOWN!!! GET BACK INSIDE NOW!!!
Monom: "Oh yeah! I remember now. Wait, why are we in lockdown again? I forgot."
Head 1: "Wait, look over there! That dwarf is all alone. Let's kill her first!"
Head 2: "I told you to shut- wait, that's actually a good idea. You're right, let's crush her bones!"

OH GOD MONOM WHY ARE YOU SO DUMB?!?! RUN BACK HERE!! DON'T RUN THAT WAY!!!

16th Hematite, 1054, Early Summer

Oh god what should I do?!? Poor Monom is going to die if we don't help her! But if I send the military out now, we'll lose our tactical advantage and jeopardize the fight! But how can I just ignore Monom?!? I can't let her die, but if I try to save her more people will die! How the hell am I supposed to-

NO! BAD LORBAM! WE DO NOT PARTY WHEN GIANT MONSTERS ARE ATTACKING!

Ettin 2: "Ha! Her skull cracked so easily! Look at all those brains!"
Ettin 1: "You were right! These dwarves are weak! Let's crush all tiny little dwarves!"

Wait, what?

NOOOO!!!!!!

17th Hematite, 1054, Early Summer

Dammit, how could that brute kill Monom?!? She was so innocent! Sure she was dumb and forgetful, but at least she was a nice dwarf! She wouldn't even harm a fly, if she remembered what they were. And that beast crushed her for it!

Yeah, come in! We're not afraid of you! CHOP HIS HEAD OFF MOMUZ! Er, wait, heads. Whatever, JUST KILL IT!!!!

20th Hematite, 1054, Early Summer

From the hospital I was able to get a full view of the battle. It was easy to see the soldiers, and of course the ettin, without exposing myself to danger. So when the ettin began marching into the fort, I did not flee. For I knew that our soldiers would not let him get any further than the bridge.

The ettin circled around the old ditch, used to protect Reveredtour from the threats of the wastes before the moat was even a thought in my head. I never expected it to cause any problems, but seeing the soldiers all charging towards the ettin on such a narrow strip of land had me worried.

The ettin tried to crush the first soldier that approached it, but did not realize that they would not go down as easily as a terrified hauler. The ettin missed and, perhaps due to its confusion over not feeling a body snap in its fist, did not react fast enough to avoid being swarmed by the soldiers. They leapt onto the ettin, hacking at any part of its body they could reach. The ettin, surprised by the ferocity of these dwarves, lost its balance.

It fell down into the old ditch, thankfully without bring any dwarves with it. This was a trivial drop for a massive creature, the equivalent of tripping for a dwarf. The ettin was now enraged though, the wound one of the soldiers had inflicted on its arm only fueling its drive to crush Reveredtour. It immediately began charging back towards the fort.

Momuz ordered both squads to fall back, deciding that it would be best to wait for the ettin to come back to them than pursue it. Indeed, the ettin did exactly as he had expected. As soon as it crossed the bridge, the soldiers charged towards the ettin. Some soldiers, showing no fear or caution, ran ahead, eager to sink their weapons into the ettin's flesh. However, their disregard for their own safety had consequences. While they had triumphed over the ettin so far, they forgot how easily it could harm them.

One soldier paid for this by losing his entire left arm. The sight of this did not deter the rest of the soldiers though. If anything, it only drove them to fight harder. The ettin soon found itself surrounded on all sides by the soldiers and their war beasts.

Every fighter in the fort had gone out to confront the ettin. The earth golems who had been trying to party stopped socializing and instead went to crush the ettin's bones. Even Shorast had leapt out of his bed in the hospital and charged out to fight. I guess even he has a sense of duty, as hard as that is for me to believe given his rude behavior.

At this point the ettin was pretty much done for. It simply couldn't stand up against the number of creatures trying to bring it down. I temporarily turned my attention away from the fight to ensure no one in the hospital was having a violent seizure or something like that. Everyone was fine, well at least as fine as a bunch of cripples could be. I heard Alath let out a long sigh. I asked him if he wanted to watch the fight, but he had declined. I think being trapped in his bed is getting to him.

I didn't have much time to dwell on this though, as I was immediately enthralled in the battle once again. If the ettin was not so massive it would be difficult to see it beneath the swarm of dwarves and beasts tearing it apart. Then, one of the earth golems tried to end the fight. It raised its orb up into the air, and brought it down upon one of the ettin's heads with incredible force. As the ettin had crushed monom's head, the earth golem had now crushed its head.

And I noticed that earth golem was my Lorbam.

If he wants to party now, he's more than welcome to do so.

Despite his decisive blow, the ettin still lived. Having two heads, the ettin was capable of clinging to life for a few more moments so long as one of them had some function left. It was basically over though. The soldiers hacked away at the ettin for a few more minutes, until air no longer flowed into its lungs. The ettin passed away, unable to take the pain any longer. One final blow to its chest was what finally made it perish though. The soldiers cheered wildly, praising the one who had delivered said blow. I could hardly believe my eyes. I expected Momuz to kill the ettin, or perhaps one of his veteran soldiers to do so. But instead, the slayer of the great beast was the last soldier I had considered worthy of such praise.

It was Shorast.

...I'm not sure how I should feel about this.

Which is what makes Dwarf Fortress so delicious. It's funny how you wrote about a cave-in, and I got one too at the same time. Though mine was a roof that I forgot to deconstruct first before I deleted the wall, woopsy. It went right through the floor, destroying an ashery and hurting quite a few people. I even had a similar casualty; a dwarven child badly hurt. Well, actually he was killed, unlike your kid. He didn't even fall down, think he just caught one unlucky rock when it bounced sideways or something.

But the rest ain't nearly as eventful as your fort though. I guess I should be glad about that as this is only my second home-made fort. Thanks to things being relatively quiet I got the opportunity to learn quite a few things; how to setup a hospital (and I even got to test it out with a minor injury after that cave-in, and huzzah it worked!), how to setup and use a military (thank you wolves for the practice) and more advanced production lines. I must be pretty damn lucky, the game is barely ever so forgiving.

Thanks for the tips by the way. Sadly Stonesense still doesn't work but at least I can enjoy the aftermath of a battle properly.

Depending on the way you play, Dwarf Fortress can actually be very safe. There are some tactics you can abuse to basically break the game. I know what they area, and I don't use them to keep the game interesting. At a certain point you stop struggling to learn the very basics of the game. Then the real difficulty comes in; satisfying your insane desires whilst keeping the fortress safe. Had I not gone and built Goden's "office" down in the abyss, Rofa would have never been an issue. But I wanted it down there, and had to deal with the problems associated with it.

Playing the game perfectly safe without ever taking a risk to do something interesting is quite dull.

and we prefer Fun?

oh and your "office" in the abyss has prompted ideas for my own Clownian Temple in my next fort... it will also be highly defensible against said clowns.

i wish it were easier to get Alath back on his feet... i never leave without a trained doctor for this very reason. i get attatched and downt want em to die.

Well having a trained doctor wouldn't help Alath to get back up, since even a doctor legendary in all medical skills can't make someone use crutches.

Though I wonder if you can even use crutches if you're missing a hand to.

I must say, I laughed at the octopre having the killing blow on the forgotten beast.

Also, I am having a problem... I got addicted to volcanoes. I like all my starts having volcanoes. Free magma! Tasty, tasty magma. Though my last start was a volcano in a haunted swamp which caused my embark to die instantly to a swarm of angry zombie alligators and zombie carp.

...Also, is there an easy way to find caverns? I tend to dig down some ways, and never find anything. Is there also a set depth they are at?

...Also, again, I just had a fight where I had 40 pages of my militia commander punching a giant toad in the head followed by three dogs biting its head for another 52 pages. Goddamn giant toad was resilient.
