Why build it over the magma sea at the bottom of the map? Build an aqueduct to bring the magma to surface level. I always do. Building at the bottom is a sure-fire way to cut yourself off from your primary source of weapons and armor. You would be basically asking your dwarves to bring you supplies by running through a minefield.
Becuase I have barely any experience with magma and have no idea how to do that.

unfortunately, the only ways that I know of to bring magma up are either Pump Stacks, or a Magma Piston.

The Pump Stack is easier to understand, but more costly as far as materials are concerned. It is a source of potential lag, and even a small mistake (Such as forgetting to make one out of magma safe materials) can cause your entire stack to fall apart. It is a reliable source of infinite lava however.

A Magma Piston is a harder to understand. If I understand the basics correctly it will be cheaper, and maybe even faster. However, I advise careful study before attempting this, as I'm not quite sure what it entails.

Edit: On further study of the Magma piston. It is a glitch method of obtaining lava. I do not recommend it for both its complexity and its breaking of reality for the Lets Play.

careful don't jinx yourself. I'm going to most likely shoot myself in the foot but where can i find this and is it free?

It's free in monetary terms, but it's very expensive in time. ;)

my military killed a troll last night. it actually came around the corner while they were gathering and attacked a soldier who was stading off to the side away from the group. both his upper legs got torn up and he was lying immobile while the rest of my soldiers chased the troll around the cavern Benny Hill style and killed it without any other injuries being sustained.

I guess my point is, are the combat logs i've seen in this LP an add-on feature? i couldn't find a way to check them, and i wanted to see how exactly my troops were doing.

Did you try pressing r on your keyboard? It should bring up the combat reports and you just need to choose the combat you want to see.

thanks, I'll try that when I get home. so far though, that troll is the only thing i've killed that's fought back, but it seemed like it only injured that one dwarf, Splintlegs McGee as he's now known. The troglodytes that sneak in just end up chasing people around until my military shows up, then they run like cowards.

Can I please be dwarfed
I'd like to note that many people, including you, are currently on the dwarfing list. It's just that a lot of other people are to and migrants only show up every once in a while, so it could be a long time before you get in. I have to be fair about it. That being said, there was a migrant wave today so some of you will be dwarfed. It's also the reason why this next update isn't going to be very long.

Chapter 84: From the journal of Stinthad Kekimtobul

__________________________________________________

23rd Slate, 1057, Mid-Spring

Another dwarf has been taken by a strange mood. I never really understood this phenomenon until I experienced it myself...actually I still don't understand it. It's weird. You feel the urge to suddenly build something you had never even though about before and afterwards you barely remember doing so. What is it that compels us to make ropes covered with spikes?

27th Slate, 1057, Mid-Spring

So now that we have access to the outside, I decided to restart my plan of shoving all the zombies into a single cage to unleash on the goblins. However, when I originally thought this up it seems I overlooked a pretty big issue. When a dwarf takes a zombie out of a cage, they often have a difficult time putting it back into one.

Sadly I only realized this when Rabid let a giant zombie cave spider out.

Why did he have to try moving the most dangerous animal first? Well he tried to get away as soon as the beast broke free but the cave spider just wouldn't have that. It covered him in a thick layer of webs, preventing him from running away.

I could only watch in horror as the cave spider attempted to bite Rabid, who just barely managed to survive by struggling through the countless layers of web. Of course I called for every soldier to get out there and help them, but most of them refused to do so! Even Goden wouldn't go! They were all too busy drinking!

So with the entire military preoccupied with plump helmet wine things weren't looking good for Rabid. I was already looking through medical texts for information on how to treat giant cave spider bites. According to the book, "a dwarf bitten by a giant cave spider is fucked and doomed to suffocation. Doctors should shove the dwarf into a coffin right away to be efficient, as they're going to end up in there anyways."

It certainly wasn't very optimisitc. However, when I looked up I saw that Rabid was fleeing from the cave spider! He had managed to get away because his pet dog rushed in to defend him, distracting the cave spider!

The dog gave it's life to defend Rabid, for the cave spider injected it with venom before anyone could reach it.

But the sacrifice was not in vain, for it allowed Root to impale the zombie upon her steel spear!

While the only casualty from this incident was a dog, it still made it clear that my plan was horribly flawed. I guess I'll have to think of some other way to defend Reveredtour.

2nd Felsite, 1057, Late Spring

Oh boy! Migrants! It's always great to see new faces coming to Reveredtour! Good thing the goblins aren't here otherwise we would have to try using the tunnel bridge to them in, and that might not work out.

Hm, decent sized group to. Well, we need a new military squad so hopefully most of them know how to fight. Maybe there's even an experienced archer among them. That would be really nice!

I may have already mentioned this when I first covered giant cave spiders, but it bears repeating; a giant cave spider bite is always fatal. Even if the cave spider doesn't kill the dwarf when they get paralyzed, they will suffocate in due time.

It seems to me that a zombie spider shouldn't have venom anymore.

Also a typo: "shoving all the zombies into a single cage to unleash on the zombies."

Jesus, regular spiders are bad enough, but cave spiders seem bit nasty. Maybe Root should get the military to sort their priorities out.

Also, Sarveshbomrek, eh? I can live with that. Mind if I get some info on myself?

Heh. I just looked at your end of first year report; and saw the population was at 12 back then with 2 deceased. I'm now looking at my own fortress, which has a population of 52, with 4 deceased at the end of the first year. Stuff's a bit hectic here, with ogres, trolls and giant cave spiders just pouring in, and the odd redistribution of minerals makes it difficult to find stuff for iron or steel. Nickel is the only metal I've been able to put out, which is not weapon grade material.

Also; do zombies drown? If not; you can line the floor of the HFS with alot of zombie creatures, in case the seacreatures aren't enough for invasions. With the added bonus that shooting them with arrows doesn't work, I have heard.

How's lil' SamuelT doing?

Internet Kraken, seeing as how you've played your share of DF, how are you feeling about Reveredtour's chances at this point? How much of a future do you think this constantly beseiged, forgotten beast attracting, blood-soaked fortress has?

Also, I've developed a habit of seeing how inappropriate I can get the name of my fortress to be. My favorite so far is my current fortress, whose name translates into "Bleaching the Anus of Angels."

What? It's not my fault "anus" is an option.

Alright, so I just gout out of school for a week of vacation. I feel the need to point out that my work ethic on vacation is nonexistent. You'd think that having more free time would get me to work better but it actually just makes me slack off. In addition to this I will also be visiting colleges next week and making a decision about which one to go to. So there probably won't be any updates coming soon.

I have no excuse for this other than being lazy though, so feel free to berate me.

how about instead of berating you for not providing me with free entertainment, I berate you for making me feel old? Unless, of course, you've waited until your 30's to attend college, in which case I withdraw my beratement due to you being older than me.

but we all know that's not the case . . . *sigh* . . .
