Sex. It's messy, it's easily forgettable, it can lead to many undesirable effects on the body...I also strongly dislike children so the paranoia that comes with anything sexual really isn't helpful. Foreplay can be fun but sex itself loses all of it's appeal a few seconds after the climax.

College.

Let me tell you a secret. College is hard.

And engineering will suck out your soul through your nose if you're not careful.

I couldn't make it through my first semester at a CC. All of the same stresses of high school with the added stress of paying for the experience. There was also the stress of not knowing what to study that made the whole thing seem like a waste of time and money to me.

Driving was one, so was turning 21 (I don't drink so all that happened is now I am dad's beer fetcher).
2 abnormal life experiences that were overhyped are rappelling and firing a machine gun. I did both of those during my stint in the army and both were kind of boring.

I don't know if this counts seeing how I skipped it, but I too will go with Senior Prom.

By that point, I was recently broken up with an girl that I eventually came to despise, I thought literally everyone at the school was either an idiot, a douche, or completely stuck up, and I was also tired of my friends.

I wasn't even really unpopular at my school. I just hated people.

Oh, and the whole having a girlfriend thing was kinda lame once I realized that you actually were suppose to work at the relationship, and super awesome romanticness wasn't really guaranteed.

Turning 18 was kinda dumb once I realized that I had no desire to take up smoking, rendering the date nearly useless.

Pretty much all of these are on my list. Especially that last one. My 18th birthday was basically "okay, you're 18 now, go buy a lotto ticket", then everything went right back to the way it was. Seemed incredibly silly.

Oh god. That's just... Wow. I flinched when I read this. You have my sympathies for that one. And no, they don't mention that at all in the comedies.

Drinking my friend and my ex's all found drinking to be awesome (btw I?m English and you need to be 18 to drink we where about 15-16) I just thought meh doesn?t taste that great ill stick to coke. then they are all like it?s not about the taste is about getting drunk so I go ok and get drunk. All that happened is that I could not remember what happened between said few hours and I woke up in bed next to some girl only up side was that she was pretty decent. I find it pointless now and if I?m going to get drunk for the hell of it ill at least drink something that tastes good which is why I now drink wine.

People who say high school is the best part of their lives.

High school was fine, but by three months into college only about two of my top ten life experiences had happened in high school.

At 36, I'd be a LONG ways down the list before something in high school showed up.



Also, my wedding. My wife and I had been living together for over three years before we got married; it's been nine years since then. The wedding itself was a cool life experience because we took maybe a dozen people to Ireland and spent a week there, with the wedding in the middle. The wedding itself was a blip on the radar; the mass travel with friends and family was awesome. If we had not gotten married in the middle of it, it still would have been amazing. And my wife and I would still have the same kind of relationship.


Similarly, the birth of our kids was not particularly astounding except in that the births marked the beginning of all the amazing things the kids do. (or at least that they start getting interesting at about 6 months) About the least interesting thing my 4 year old daughter has done is be born. One of my favorites? She sleeps with a two foot long nerf sword so she can fight off any bad dreams that show up.

getting a job. I was promised as a child that doing so would teach me the value of a dollar. But ya know what, after decades of working, it only taught me how much more value time has over $. I've learned how much *others* value a dollar, obsessively - almost equating to worship. But the more i work the less value a dollar has in my eye. Sorry ma, you were wrong! Or very right, but not in the way you thought you'd be. hehe

What are you on about, it taught you the value of the dollar. It just wasn't very much.

Personally? Sex.. Generic, vanilla, sex. Everyone is all "YOU'LL BECOME A MAN" and then, when I finally did.. It was meh. Tiring, hard work, and boring.

No, really. I was on a cruise, family were with me, I had a date lined up with someone on the ship. Family are like 'oh there's a dolphin show on, come with us.' I say no, obviously. And they have a massive go about me not spending enough time with them on the holiday. No shit, there were people my age on the ship.
In the end I had to cancel the date.

That's why fuck dolphins.

Being able to drink is awesome. Nothing better than going to the pub with mates after (or sometimes during) college. But being able to do it legally does mean that I hardly ever bother getting very drunk, I just get merry instead.

Losing my virginity, but not really for the same reasons others have mentioned.

I don't know what guys expect, but as a girl I was always told it was going to hurt and be awkward. It didn't really and it wasn't really. It wasn't incredible, but it wasn't bad either and I had fun (and no, I wasn't in some serious, loving relationship with the guy to distract me from the discomfort or whatever).

Furthermore, I was always led to believe that, despite the "inevitable" discomfort and awkwardness it was going to be some massive event in my life that changed me forever. Yeah... not so much. Don't get me wrong, I really love sex, but popping my cherry just wasn't that big of a deal for me.

The whole thing about Highschool being a fun experience was a lie. I am glad I graduated back in 2006. I found graduation to be completely boring. I wish I had stayed home. Birthdays are not really special to me, I view them as just another day.

I never went to prom but I am guessing I would have found it boring as well.

Also this. I'm at a very prestigious university, and yes, obviously I knew it was going to be difficult when I accepted my place, but I'd expected more of a balance. My university also has an incredibly inconvenient reputation for being oh so glamorous and jolly good fun, old chap (I'm British and said reputation is significantly dated). If I (or any of my friends who are also hating the experience) dare to complain we get dismissed out of hand, even though most of the people doing the dismissing (parents, friends at other universities) know nothing about the place except what they've been fed the by the various media.

What branch of engineering are you going into?

Civil Engineering. I've mainly focused on water treatment, and environmental classes. The structural and highway work just isn't as interesting. I get the degree in about a month. It's been a long long road.

How about you?

Oh, I'm going for a computer science degree now, but my best friend is also almost finished with his mechanical engineering degree. From what he's told me they run you engineering majors pretty ragged. Props to you for managing to get through it.

Honestly, Prom.

Before I start getting any replies, yes, I did go to Prom, and yes, I did enjoy it. Seriously though, it is hyped like crazy and it's considered the best night your high school years. This is obviously coming from shallow people with no true friends and a lack of perspective to what "being popular" amounts to (i.e. absolutely nothing).

I went with a group of friends who all decided to not take dates and to just enjoy the night as singles. We laughed, we ate, took pictures, danced a lot, and I got a few kisses and hugs from girls who I was slightly interested in. Overall, it was great, but not "amazing" as many before me have speculated.

The best night of my high school years was when I took my first love to another more enjoyable and awesome dance.

Drinking. The fun I get from drinking comes from being around friends who are also drinking. Drinking alone doesn't do much for me.

Yeah, I got told the same thing, it wasn't bad... I didn't get bullied or anything, in fact I don't think anyone at my school got bullied, I mean the football team was crap so they couldn't laud superiority over the geeks in the band who got to play at the Olympics and NFL football games. And a gay band geek/cheerleader was homecoming king my sophomore year. But despite the overwhelming acceptance of everyone that existed at my school I would hardly say it was the best time of my life, I basically was bored most of the time, which is why I spent my senior year at a community college.
