Dark Souls, eh?

That's some mighty big shoes to fill. I mean, the gameplay of Dark Souls has kept me playing that game since I bought it over a year ago, probably more hours then The Elder Scrolls, maybe pushing WoW in hours now. I'll keep tabs on this now.

Right, because everything remotely difficult is now the Dark Souls of its genre, or at least half Dark Souls and half whatever else it is.

Please guys. A time limit and limited inventory are not even in Dark Souls, and having combat that isn't turn based and stagger mechanics don't make it Dark Souls either. Can you choose where to go rather than have a linear storyline? That's a step in the right direction. Do you stand to lose progress if you fail a mission? Are there a variety of weapons with different movesets? Are instructions delivered through blatant tutorials or through in-game mechanics and NPCs? Do you have to assess hazards as you go based on your surroundings?

You know what? Just for that ridiculous mix of stuff I might just check this out. I have no idea what FFXIII was about after the second Barthandelus fight I could never beat, but to hell with that. This sounds like an interesting mix.
Not much happens after that fight, you've already gotten like 90% of the story (if I remember correctly that is). However, a whole bunch of crazy and totally stupid shit happens in XIII-2 which will probably be really important despite how terrible it is, so you're still out of luck. It may be better just to not figure out what happened. It will probably make more sense that way.

OT- I am not interested in this game. No amount of fun sounding mechanics will make me interested in this game. I will only consider getting it if it somehow opens to near universal praise. Sure, this stuff all sounds nice, but so did a lot of the stuff they said about the previous two entries, and they were terrible.

This sounds terrible.

- Action RPG, I prefer turn based and we don't seem to get very many these days
- Unforgiving difficulty, no thanks.
- Limited inventory, never liked a limited inventory
- Time limit, no thanks. I absolutely hate time limits.

Sounds like this game isn't for a Final Fantasy fan like me.
Dark souls isn't difficult.

To be honest what I've seen so far for it hasn't looked bad at all. I'm wondering what exactly they mean by saying it's like Dark Souls. The difficulty? It can't be the gameplay, because in the gameplay trailers they've shown it's really not similar at all.

I would normally reflexively cringe at the major change in a truly venerable series, but I'm firmly in the "FF8 was the last remotely playable FF game" camp, so...

DO IT

either that or remake ff 1 again for gods sake.

I'll pass on the combat that requires me to care, the time limit so I can't complete the game in one play-through and the limited inventory so I can't collect and keep every item as I usually do.

In order to play this game, I'd have to beat XIII-2. In order to play that, I need to beat XIII. I can't get 5 hours into that game without wanting to smash my head violently against a physical surface out of boredom. Otherwise, I doubt I will ever play this game.

Ah well. There's always playing through IV, VI and IX again.

I'm sick of innovation with this franchise. I'd be happy if they were still doing 2D dropdown RPGmaker-style games & focusing more on telling a story with compelling characters & less of fighting mechanics.

The biggest thing keeping me from being too interested in this is that it'll probably be a sequel to XIII-2, and I'd have to slog through one mediocre JRPG and one okay one to get the story stuff. Which is kind of the focus of Final Fantasy.

EDIT: Then again, I like Dark Souls and can probably take killing giant monsters with skill over all the backstory.
Plot of XIII-2 can be summed up as 'Time machines'.

Slightly more seriously, the heroes lost.

Caius managed to destroy the timeline, erasing all of existence in the process. Serah dies immediately afterward because her ability to see into the future slowly killed her, and then Noel is left alone in a void of nothingness. Meanwhile, Lightning faced off against Caius in the ruins of Valhalla, stuck in an endless battle for an eternity.

Lightning Returns, from what I understand, has all of time collapsed into itself to create the End of Time, which is the town that the game takes place in. Time has stopped completely in this town, because the concept no longer exists. How they have have a time limit of 7-13 days in a place where time explicitly does not exist is a mystery, however.

Aha... so the producer of a game in a game series that is currently losing the favour of the enthusiastic gamer crowd is pleading that his game is actually like a game from a game series adored by said crowd.
Tbh I think it is just PR bullshit. I doubt he knows why these people even liked Dark Souls in the first place. He is looking for a straw to save the reputation of the game and bolster the sales.

you are dumb as shit, just cause its and action rpg doesnt mean oh its dark souls, kingdom hearts, legend of zelda, monster hunter, are all action rpgs, stop trying to get clicks and make money, you are the reason people dont believe in gaming journalism. It's no longer about the game or the integrity, it's about the money.
You do realize it was the game's producer who compared it to Dark Souls, not the jounalist?

Count me in as interested with the Action combat. I have not enjoyed the turn based combat in FF games since FFX and it is good they are changing it up a bit, but if we still have to go into a new 'battle zone' or whatever you call it whenever you fight something, then no thanks.

I don't mind the change to the combat and the lack of turn based combat. What I don't care for is the constant push towards only one character. I play Final Fantasy games for the character interaction and development, and the side questing for hours. I like having a party of multiple characters with a ton of side content to explore. Final Fantasy is not a single person adventure, it's an adventure of multiple characters.

So far they haven't been able to get their heads on straight with any of the Final Fantasy XIII titles. The first was linear as hell and tunneled you to the damn end and had an extreme lack of side quests that Final Fantasy is so good at and known for. The 2nd dropped you down to 2 characters and consolation prized in a monster for a 3rd party member, while having a story that was half-assed.

Now this one comes off as "You gotta rush through it!" and gives you only Lightning.

I'm not confident about the story in this game, but the stories in ALL the FF games were pretty bad. Even the good ones. The gameplay looks pretty interesting though, and I'm not too proud to admit that I loved FFXIII-2 for some reason, so I'll definitely be getting this.

If it does not have turn based combat then it is a shit Final Fantasy game. Will not get. Thanks for making my decision easy Square.
Have you played final fantasy crisis core? It's got a (In my opinion, obviously) great story, staples of final fantasy like summons, magic and attack skills (Jump etc.) It isn't turn based and I actually really enjoy the change in pace from my normal FF games. Admittedly, I've massively overdone the side missions so I now 3-shot bosses in the storyline, but hey.

The story is probably going to suck (considering how much worse it got in FFXIII-2, something i never thought possible) but the gameplay sounds interesting. I love games that are built around a concept of time managment (like Pikmin and Dead Rising) and a Dark Souls inspired combat system could be very interesting.

I´m probably going to buy it, atleast it´s more interesting than most other AAA games out there, atleast they try to do something with the gameplay instead of just focussing all their energy on story.
