I would of loved to see the initial discussion regarding this case at the lawyer's office as this guy turned into a human lolipop right before the lawyer's eyes. Although, honestly, lawyers that take on these ridiculously frivalous cases aren't free of blame even if it is because they'll get paid either way.

Let me first state that video game addiction is just like any other addiction out there and just as serious. You have people addicted to gambling, sex, various types of alcohol and drugs, coffee, candy, whateverthefuck, ect... and they all have their own special support groups for people who truly want to get better. Video games have as much potential to become addictive as any other medium, and to some it already is.

HOWEVER, people who are aware that they got addicted don't blame the supplyers (usually, depends on the addiction I suppose), they admit they have a problem and try to get help. This man is trying to blame others for his own choices without realizing it sooner. He's free to go to a support group, I'm sure there are even groups where people addicted to bananas can go to, but suing NCsoft for making a game that he chose to put so much time into and ignored his family. NCsoft can't predict how it's userbase will react to their games, they're not responsible for how you obsessed over it.

The point still stands. You know something is hot and has the potential to harm you. Handle it carefully. It was obviously hot(as I'm sure the steam coming out of it and the heat from the cup would indicate). Let it cool or open it somewhere that won't get it all over you should you spill it. Common sense.

I think you guys are missing the point. Everything shouldn't have to come with a warning label warning you about every possibility that could happen to you if you use the product. People should use some common sense and stop blaming others for their stupid mistakes.

Hot coffee will burn you if you spill it on yourself. Common sense says to handle it carefully. Spending too much time(2 freaking years) on a game will mess up your life if you let it. Common sense says don't let that happen.

If I drop my PSP on my foot and break a toe, do I sue them for making it heavy enough to break a toe and not putting a warning label on it? No. Instead, I use common sense and hold on to it tight enough not to drop it.

Having played Lineage II back in college a bit, I remember it being rather fun, though that might have had more to do with my whole floor in the dorm teaming up than the game itself. Everything is better with a bunch of friends.

Anyways, my point is I remember it flashing up warnings "You've been playing for 1 Hour, please considering taking a quick break" or for 4 hours or whatever. So this guy is totally crazy.

Wow, I wasn't aware anyone actually sided with the lady on this one. It's hot coffee, and I was unaware there were standards for the temperature that coffee can be sold at. Seems to me it should be served just below boiling anyways. All I know is that since the lawsuit, coffee at McDonald's is now kept too cool and just isn't that good

Ok, let's take a step back here:

The woman was right. Legally.

The Liebeck case [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liebeck_v._McDonald%27s_Restaurants] rested on the fact that the coffee was actually hotter than it could or should have been.

Mrs Liebeck suffered burns

where it was determined that she had suffered third-degree burns on six percent of her skin and lesser burns over sixteen percent. She remained in the hospital for eight days while she underwent skin grafting. During this period, Liebeck lost 20 pounds (nearly 20% of her body weight), reducing her down to 83 pounds. Two years of medical treatment followed.

Why so much damage? Well, McDonald's REQUIRES its coffee to be sold at 180-190F; this is despite being sued repeatedly for serving coffee that's both "unreasonably dangerous" and "defectively manufactured", which they've never denied.

In 2-7 seconds contact with your skin, it will create a third degree burn.

Other documents obtained from McDonald's showed that from 1982 to 1992 the company had received more than 700 reports of people burned by McDonald's coffee to varying degrees of severity, and had settled claims arising from scalding injuries for more than $500,000.

And worse

McDonald's quality control manager, Christopher Appleton, testified that this number of injuries was insufficient to cause the company to evaluate its practices.

Even with that balance against MaccyD's, they were found 80% responsible. Liebeck took 20% of the charges due to her own negligence.

Starbucks, Dunkin' Donuts, Wendy's, and Burger King have all been sued over coffee scalds and still continue, nay demand, that it's served at that temperature.

Hot coffee hurts, it really shouldn't deface.

So...Rockstar aren't the only ones to have been stung by Hot Coffee.
