i don't see how a cash-in sequel to an already pretty terrible game would work, can they really make something THAT poor? Well i guess we will have to wait and see...

Why make a sequel to a game that was so poorly received? This isn't like FFX; which was positively received at the time, FFXIII got some poor reviews, from both critics and fans - why would you want to make a sequel to such a terrible game?
Maybe you guys know something that I don't, but FFXIII has an 83 out of 100 score on metacritic. Obviously that's not as high as earlier games, but it's still a positive score. Do you think a game needs to score above 90 to be considered a success? FFXIII was the fastest selling Final Fantasy game Square has ever released. It must have been pretty successful if Square is considering a direct sequel.

Leave these forums for a few minutes and actually read reviews, e.g. John Funk's review on this very site [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/7296-Review-Final-Fantasy-XIII], and you'll learn that FFXIII received near universal praise with the negative opinions being the exceptions. The only common complaint is the game starts almost unbearably slow but is still worth the wait once everything gets going. It's also the fastest-selling Final Fantasy game ever [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/99276-Final-Fantasy-XIII-Is-the-Fastest-Selling-Final-Fantasy]. So there's that.

Since a sequel is justified and I rather enjoyed XIII, I'm just hoping XIII-2 doesn't undergo the same drastic drop in quality that X-2 experienced. If they properly streamline the paradigm combat system, which was awesome, and add a little more Gran Pulse style freedom, I'll likely love it.

Sales don't always equate to popularity. Devil May Cry 2 for example, is still the fastest selling DMC out of the 4 games and its by far the worst both critically and in popularity.

...I enjoyed it in some ways...

I need to go back to playing XIII... I got to... erm... I don't remember what it was called anymore, where you can finally pick your party members, then just stopped playing it...

It's the highest selling FF ever due to advertisement being at an all time high within the game industry, game advertisements are now on prime-time TV, furthermore, the industry itself is the biggest its ever been, the partnership with Microsoft putting it on multiple consoles and the fact they [falsely] advertised it as a return to form for the series.

Regarding reviews; I don't think I ever said it gained a majority of poor reviews, you seem to jump to a conclusion that isn't there [the clue is in the wording], but if you see here [http://bumped.org/tek/2010/02/01/why-the-japanese-hate-final-fantasy-13-amazon-reviews/] as an example, the game received mediocre scores from players.

It really depends what you consider successful - is making a game that sells well but appeals to the lowest common denominator [all flash with little substance] make you successful as game developers?

I think I might just be able to endure the bloody battle system in FFXIII if they'd just let me explore the places I travel through. Seriously, good scenery is all well and good, but it's a terrible waste to have it on the screen for little more than the few seconds it takes for the camera to pan across it, never to be seen in the game again. The whole sense of scale of the world is just tiny without the ability to explore.

Why do my least favorite FF games get direct sequels? 10 and 13, are you people on drugs? The only thing I liked about 10 was it had the freshest coat of paint and voice acting everything else, like forced job roles, blitzball, the temple puzzles, the rings made me hate it. Same for 13, it was the prettiest Ive seen in a while, but so back asswards, its like they did a bad version of 12.

All I want out of next gen FF games, is open worlds, Livened up turn based combat, items, extras, good stories, Characters that are realistic or just not so girly. Monster hunting, treasure finding, long unneeded endgame content that you could bypass completely, but in truth that stuff has the best parts. And characters you build up and have full control over, none of this "she's a healer, but if you bust your point wad, you can slowly pull her to the right and make her a weak warrior".

That or make next gen mawfuggin Final Fantasy Tactics With a mature storyline unlike FFTA2 where you get sucked into a book for being detained in the 7th grade or something.

They probably decided to add TOWNZ and non-linearity in lieu of all the complaints.

I loved FFXIII as a stand-alone game, so it's nice to see a new AAA game.

But 1 condition: Fang is once again playable.

Im talking from personal and experience and as a long suffering player of the series. FF13 was not a very good game and i don't see how some of it's miss-steps can be so readily ignored.
I agree with the sentiment, having read some of those professional reviews I'm amazed at some of the comments made - it really does seem in most cases the reviewers fail to justify why the game is apparently so good; of course the mainstream review system works on the 7-10 scale so that could explain the ludicrously high score for a game with so many highly publicized, and obvious, faults.

No. Bad. We've already seen that direct sequels don't work for Final Fantasy games. Spinoffs rarely work, either.
Final Fanatsy Spinoff's rarely work? Clearly you haven't played Dissidia, Dirge of Cereberus, or even Crisis Core cause all 3 of those games were awesome and fun.

I'd play it.

Just have Sazh in it.
If FFXIII-2 goes the same way as X-2 then all males will be taken out and replaced by Vocaloids and possibly Gackt who shoehorned himself into FFVII so why not XIII as well?

Alright, I doubt XIII-2 will be as J-Pop-tastic as X-2. Maybe it will be a movie though. My hopes are not high.

With Spaure-Enix RPGs as the subject, where's that 3rd installment of Kingdom Hearts people are still looking for? Wouldn't that be a little more well received than a direct-sequel to the least popular, single player, numerical Final Fantasy released?

Played Dirge. It made me go "Eh..."

Heard terrible things about Crisis Core from my friend.

Never played Dissidia.

Why make a sequel to a game that was so poorly received? This isn't like FFX; which was positively received at the time, FFXIII got some poor reviews, from both critics and fans - why would you want to make a sequel to such a terrible game? If it's additional content not used in the first game then there's DLC for that - if you want to "finish" the story of Lightning, as the writer, or designer or someone had previous stated...then that's a poor idea because the story of FFXIII was abysmal once you look behind the flash and melodrama.

I can't see the logic behind the move but then again this is Square-Enix; a company that has pretty much run Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Dragon Quest and pretty much any other series it had going for it into the ground...
I really have to wonder what the hell Square Enix is doing these days, since it seems like whoever is calling the shots has taken a severe blow to the head. Almost everything I hear about Square Enix nowadays is calling the quality of the company into question and highlights their repeated failures. When was the last time you heard about a failure as big as FF14 was?

I really enjoyed the game. Just create a little more variety and gameplay choices and I'm fine.

Simple question: Why?

I don't think the story needs to continue. FFXIII's story ended pretty much completely. A continuation of the world? Yeah, I can see it but that's what all the other spinoffs are for, but a direct sequel? Nah. I don't see the necessity of it all.

not really sure i enjoyed XIII tbh. i know i wanted too but was just not feeling the combat at all. when x-2 came out i was still young so i sort of have that nostalgic ability to look back and remember the highlights. i would say X is in my top 5 games so anything to do in that world only made me happier. I also liked that team that paine used too be in. was cool.

My sentiments exactly. The only good that MIGHT come out of this is if Motomu Toriyama (writer-director of XIII) does it and is pre-occupied so he can't touch FFXV. The guy is a HORRIBLE story-teller and writer. ANYONE who relegates important plot exposition to a datalog separate from the narrative should be stripped of writing duties. Heck, he even does in the Parasite Eve sort-of-sequel 3rd Birthday (which is HORRIBLE btw). Get the man AWAY from writing, he's toxic.
