I for one am dismayed by this outcome. Sony got everything it deserved, and it's just a shame that its users ended up paying the price so terribly.

Arrest the Lulzsec members on a basis of defrauding the users and depriving them of a paid-for service, maybe, if there has actually been any evidence of the "stolen" account details having been used for financial gain, but consider them vs Sony itself as a bit of white hat hacking. If they hadn't done it, imagine if an actual highly organised criminal group had done so without any fanfare...

In fact, don't let Sony get away scot free either. I'm pretty sure that, in europe at least, this counts as a crime of negligence in the field of customer data protection.

LulzSec's greatest failing is breaking out of Anonymous and attempting to have identifiable personalities within the group. You do that, you become traceable, and the whole thing rapidly falls to shit. In fact I pretty much predicted this outcome a couple weeks ago on the basis that they were no longer anon, and probably didn't bother with proxies or other obfuscation...

Honestly I'm rooting for lulzsec. They are willing to show these people how poorly these companies defend themselves, which is needed.

No, I really think it's the opposite, if they show the hackers that they aren't untouchable, and that if they mess with large companies shit WILL go down and they WILL be found, then hackers will stop attacking them. It's like the school bully, if you try to ignore the problem it won't go away, but if you fight back you have a chance of getting the guy to stop beating you up because the risk isn't worth it.

I'm not going to get into a whole argument about the whole removal of Other OS, that's not what this thread is about anyways. Though if people where using it to cheat and pirate I say they where somewhat in the right to remove the function anyways. This is about the illegal actions of some hackers, and no matter what Sony may have done no illegal action against them, especially one that hurts so many third party people, is justified.

For now, I'll simply state that I disagree with it being completely justified. The current lack of definitive legal boundaries/rights is almost universally one-sided against the customer.
There needs to be legal control and provision yes, but it shouldn't be so loose as to legally permit Sony to virtually own products you bought from them, regardless of how they are used.

Actually you own the product but not the services, and its basically the same with all modern consoles that connect online.

Didn't Sony sell PS3 touting their capability to run multiple operating systems (i.e. Linux) and then go back on that by removing functions and punishing it's users until they updated their PS3's to remove the capability to run other OS's?

Not really, I can't actually remember seeing/hearing/reading that PS3 could run OS, I think it maybe on small print on the box but nothing massive. Then they thought "that could ruin PSN better get rid of it" then they pulled it. They sued Geohotz for releasing the information to the net on how to hack the PS3, not for hacking the PS3.

So why should Sony be punished for trying to protect it's honest, non hacking customers?

Good juxtaposition but I think in this case, the hackers probably think Sony is the bully which is why they keep hitting back whenever sony does something like take away a function of the ps3 or sue some hacker that decided to crack the console.
Sony the big multinational corporation or a small group of nerds that got kicked out of Anonymous and may or may not get paid for their work. Which one do you think comes off as the bully when you look at it from the hacker perspective?
The hackers already know that they're not untouchable and that they can get prosecuted & sued and it seems that every time Sony tries to bring down the hammer, a completely different (group of) hacker(s) brings down an even bigger hammer.

Ultimately what Sony needs to calculate is what is the bigger loss for them:
They either let the hackers do whatever they want with the ps3 hardware leading to a loss of sales for others who decide to hack their console.
or
They continue to be really aggressive in persecuting people like Geohots and just bight the bullet when his supporters retaliate.

Personally, I think the former is a smaller, more calculated loss for Sony (there's just going to be some people that wont buy games) and would lead to less instances of us losing features and services (if they concentrate more on the legitimate consumers having a great experience rather than temporarily foiling the illegitimate consumers).

I'd rather see them concentrate on the legitimate consumers like us rather than the illegitimate ones who they will never get money out of.
