They should make one of these for anti-virus programs. While the game is "loading" it is actually scanning your PC for viruses. Then you get to blast anything found into a million pieces :p
That's a decent idea, although the idea of blasting away files is a little bit too much. Normally when a scan picks up a virus I like to quarantine it first to see what it is and where it came from, etc.

OT, I see the concept of the game is pretty clear, but it goes too far in a practical sense. Deleting random files is too big a punishment. What would have been better is if each alien you shot down broke the game slightly more - eg, moving left was much slower than the other directions, etc. Then it might actually be fun to play rather than just some ethical index finger wagging in your face.

Wow, and I thought Steel Battalion was harsh.

Quite a few people are saying things along the lines of "This is stupid", and "What's the point, who would use this?". I couldn't disagree more. I find this a powerful artistic statement. It challenges the values presented in games by having real consequences for our actions (whether they be "good" or "bad"). A bold move.

I love how the highscores consist of like 9 people who had the balls to play this game.

I feel like all the people misunderstanding this are going out of their way just to get on the nerves of the rest of us.

Nobody said the shit you have the OPTION of shooting is an enemy, so you are not having your files deleted for 'succeeding,' you're watching shit get destroyed... As a consequence of you destroying shit.. duh.

The score is arbitrary, the deleted files are not. IT'S ALL IN THE NAME OF THE FUCKING GAME AAARRRGH!

Incidentally the only lasting use of this game beyond that of a thought experiment (at least that I can see) is using it as a digital 'Chikky run'

Two people sit down to play Lose/Lose. They can stop playing at any time, but whoever stops playing with the highest score has bigger balls. They cannot see each others scores until it is over. Exactly the same efect of both dropping bricks on your accelerators and trying to be the last to bail out of the car.

Oh wow. I'd totally partition a hard drive and install a game or something to play that. Do network drives (you know, the ones shared by everyone on the network) work for that? Because if so, my school cleans up the Z drive (the one in which everyone puts their files, because C and D are frozen) at the end of every year, so this might be a fun way to do it.

It's a good idea but if you played this game on a computer with work or school files it could, quite literally, thoroughly ruin your life.

wow I can see that catching on, I could only really see it being a fun way to potentally muck up somone elces pc.
but still i wander how it could exolve prehaps a virtion that when you die it crashes your PC or stops all fans in the PC survearly overheating the processor (basicly distroying the PC) or a 360 virtion that brings on red ring.

When does the game end if you don't kill anything?

It's a very interesting concept, really.
Interesting thoughts behind it, and I do see what they mean.

Honestly, I know enough people that care more about a chance to kill a boss that may drop a piece of equipment that would (if they roll high enough) increase their mage's gearscore than going to a movie with the rest of their friends, which...to me, uh, well...

I understand, but I tend to blow off raids for things like that.

But like the article said - when does it switch? When does data matter more than real life experiences? Maybe if its your first time into Sunwell and your guild is disbanding in 2 days and the expansion is coming out in a week, and it would probably be the only time you would ever get to see the place? I don't know, I don't have a tangible line for people to blur, but I do find it odd when people in school with me talk about how they're proud of their gamerscore, achievements, their 30k gold on Laughing Skull, but I guess some people feel odd when they find out I have close-to-world-record scores in Crazy Taxi and SSX Tricky...

But I don't go out of my way and think that those mean much, but maybe they do? Maybe in the future being a virtual snowboarder will be just as great as being a real one?
i lol'd.
this is such a non issue.

I'd totally partition a drive just to play this game. I could come up with 10k files that can be deleted easily.
Where's your sense of adventure?! I would do it on my work machine.. :D

EXCEPT THE DUMB***ES MADE IT FOR MAC ONLY!!! Jeeez.... Release a PC version and I will beat the high score. I was going to waste some time on it now, but no PC version... :(

Other thoughts... I know and understand everything that is critical and more valuable than physical stuff. Also, nothing is worth more to me than my Guitar. Not even my computer that cost 2x as much...

This is like playing russian roulette, but skill instead of luck.

And files instead of brain.

Wait wait....and I haven't checked the game out yet...they ONLY made it for Mac? That's absolutely screaming for me to play it. Problem is, with my luck I'd lose a piece of a session file in my protools stuff and lose a killer guitar solo or something like that

... What the hell?! Why not make a game that kills your family and rapes your dog, guys? That'd motivate people to not screw around in your game!

I have a suggestion for a sequel. The game logs on to the 'net, and every time the player kills an alien, the designers receive a small electric shock. I mean, if player-derived actions are supposed to have real consequences, the designers surely wouldn't choose to duck their own responsibility for generating the situation from which those actions originate, would they?

With any luck, the sequel would cause enough neural damage to prevent the pretentious twits from trying to pass off a virus as a philosophical comment/game ever again.

Also, what kind of bullshit is this? Are they saying data isn't worth as much as something physical? Emotions aren't physical, yet we value them. God damn hippies!
