Wait, so if you shoot at ENEMY spacecraft that damages YOUR OWN data and files?

How the F**K does that make sense? If it was an online multiplayer, and it deleted files on your opponent's computer and also by extension your opponent successfully attacking you dmaged/removed your own files... that would make sense... but only slightly.

Cool concept, but terrible execution. While it fits with the name "lose/lose", having a game punish you for succeeding is incredibly retarded.

The sense I get from this is that the creator thinks it's never wrong to destroy anything or anyone for any reason, and that the enemies in ANY game are proxies for real people.
Longshot said:
The game is fundamentally flawed in that it tells us that it has consequences to fight back in an alien invasion.

I think you guys are missing the point. :V Where did it say that you HAD to shoot the aliens? And that they were ENEMIES? It's just people being used to the old school game mechanics that makes you ASSUME that you HAVE to shoot the aliens. But they never shoot back. How is that INVADING? All we can see is that the game takes place in what looks like space. Who's to say that the PLAYER isn't the one invading the ALIENS? How can you even call shooting aliens that aren't even shooting back for 'fighting back the alien INVASION?'
That doesn't sound like success to me, more like senseless killing of defenceless creatures. (unless you ram into them, which your ship can't handle) :V For which the creator felt should be 'rewarded' by slapping that back in your face and senselessly kill YOUR files U:

The thing is, this isn't as much as a game that has to be played but the creator's trying to bring out a message. It's the CONCEPT of the game that matters, not so much the game itself I would think :V

Herp-a-derp, ARTISTICness and DEEPness
Enough of this pretentious-Californian-pacifist male-thong-wearing BULLSHIT.

THERE IS ZERO LOGIC IN THE SHOOTING OF ALIENS CAUSING DAMAGE TO YOUR COMPUTER

If the aliens attack you, yeah, that makes sense for your files being deleted.

This is just a pretentious douche-bag pseudo-intellectual half-wit who clearly has a pathalogical god-complex where he/she get their kicks from doling out arbitrary punishments for breaking their own twisted moral code.

It is COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT that the alien spaceships don't shoot back if they RAM INTO YOU and "kill you" with your spacecraft being destroyed - in the same way the alien aggressor's craft are destroyed - and the game explicitly telling you that "you lost". What the hell does the game designer expect? It is ENTIRELY LOGICAL to shoot them.

The way I see this is I start the game flying through space minding my own business and some aggressive species starts kamikaze attacks against me. I can't turn back, can't escape, the game won't let me, the designer won't let me, I have no choice but to fight for my "life".

Yet the game designer (i.e. god of this realm) which made it impossible for me to escape decides he should punish me in the most insidious and underhanded way just for exercising my GOD DAMN HUMAN RIGHT TO SELF DEFENCE and the sadistic bastard has the GALL to reward me points and encourage me to fight while punishing me in secret.

The one and only Lesson = some people are just sad sadistic f**k-wits. Especially if they are put into a position of power* and they THINK they are morally justified.

*ability to delete your files = destroy your property = power

I suspect this developer is the WORST kind of pacifist, the type would would rather have innocent people be killed than fight back or show any resistance against an aggressor. I'm not going to call him a Nazi (Godwin's law is tough) but I will put him in the same category as the appeasers in the 1930's the ones who could have stopped Hitler but did anything to appease the fascist regime instead of doing what is now obviously right, to stop the Nazi regime when they had the chance.

My faith in humanity has slipped to an even lower level with the mere existence of this game.

There are some REAL lessons to be learned, like how nuclear war is un-winnable due to the very nature of ICBMs and nuclear weapons. But this teaches us nothing except about the twisted mind of the developer. On they other hand, they could be just a freaking moron, so thick and with their head shoved so far up their own ass in pretentious naval gazing that they don't realise the fundamental flaws in their logic.

I suppose he thought he/she was being clever, like in the end of that classic movie "Wargames" only this prat has clearly missed the entire freaking point since the game is completely arbitrarily rigged in illogical ways rather than showing an essential nature of conflicts of how to play the game without playing if you know what I mean.

It may delete files off your computer, but the developer probably didn't think about the powers of THE ALMIGHTY SANDBOX! [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandbox_(computer_security))]

Well, I would take advantage of the sandbox software on my PC, but I must be going wrong somewhere, because I can't seem to find an executable for the damn thing...

PROTIP: Nobody told you that you HAVE to play the game :D And you HAVE been warned about the file-deletion too.

If you saw a deep hole in the ground with a warning-sign next to it saying 'WARNING, LARGE HOLE IN GROUND, IT WILL HURT IF YOU FALL DOWN THERE', would you then get pissed off too? :V

I think you're looking at it too much as a GENERIC TYPICAL VIDEO GAME and not enough as some philosophical artsy message or whateverness that you aren't even forced to look at or otherwise interact with :V

I think it deleted my copy of "Here Comes Your Man" by the Pixies...

iTunes can't find it anywhere, but then again, iTunes is crap.

Whatever, you haven't addressed even half of the points I made and just made a cop-out straw man argument of "well you don't have to play it" which is utterly pointless.

My point is this game fails even in its "artsy" or philosophical role. I did not criticise this by game logic, I criticised it by logic-logic. I mean this "game" all the intellectual nuances of a bully hitting some smaller kid with the smaller kid's own hand while telling him "Stop hitting yourself, stop hitting yourself, stop hitting yourself...".

I was hoping you would realise the point I was making instead of editing most of my points out of my response (see Fisking [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fisking]) when you replied only to dismiss my critique by saying I should merely not play it i.e. leave the debate.

My question is why would ANYONE play this game?

I see this as nothing but a sadistic trick, pretentious vandalism. Basically a creative virus. But a virus none the less.

This should be labelled as malware by anti-virus software and deleted as soon as the AV program detects it.

If the designer of this deceptive game says they don't envision this being used as a malicious trick then they are either lying through their teeth or they are cripplingly stupid.

Edit:

Been done before. Check out psDoom.

Still, if I had a VMWare license, I'd play it. Mostly as a kind of "Well, fuck you right back!" to the developers.

Does someone want to tell me how to run the thing? There's no .exe file.

Hmmm... I'd never head of that before, though I do like the disclaimer:

I will not assume any liability for damage caused from running this code. Especially if you are running it as root. In fact, we both know that this will cause damage to the system, and that's why you want to try it. You have been warned.
It kinda makes me want to try it...

For the love of god someone please tell me how to actually run the game. There is no .exe file in the downloaded zip archive and I have a big hard drive full of files really keen to be deleted by this thing. Do I need some special program?

This is nothing new. Steel Batallion for the original Xbox, deleted your game save when you died (if you didn't hit the eject button quickly enough). It's part of what made the game so badass (other than the 3 and a half foot controller and pedals).
I remember that, if you were about to be killed, you had to hit the eject button fast enough toherwise you would die and your save file would go bye-bye. If you did it right though, you would get another go.

Cool game, that. Just looked at psDoom, interesting little thing that.

I trying to avoid playing either, then again my school computer is looking quite tempting....
