Why not? Every Star Wars game that has been good is 3rd Person.

Awesome! I love stories that touch on the criminal underside of the galaxy in SW - I've had the best time by far playing my Bounty Hunter and Imperial Agent in SWTOR. This sounds very cool indeed.

Not necessarily. Republic Commando and KOTOR 2 took a darker spin on Star Wars while still remaining true to the feel of the universe.

And hell, there's always been grit in Star Wars. The criminal scene was always a big part of the franchise, what with bounty hunters, Jabba's Cartel, and smugglers. Crime syndicates isn't that much of a stretch.
Smugglers and gangsters were never played "gritty." Well, possibly in the prequels, but even the Death Sticks dealer was played in B-movie camp-style.

My point is that the premise of the game doesn't mean it has to be blood guts and tits to be gritty. Star Wars has always dealt with the criminal element, and it can be dark, mature and violent while still managing to be fun escapism. They aren't mutually exclusive.

Anyone wanna bet that based on the success of this, it will determine whether or not a Battlefront III will emerge?
As much as I hate to say it - Battlefront 3's dead for good. LucasArts abandoned that ship a looong time ago, with no intent of ever returning.
That's what we all said about toonami...

I'm betting they're gonna force us to "turn to the light side" at some point for some bullshit reason. SHUT UP AND LET ME KILL. EVERYONE.

Fucking loved that game.

This reminds me of the planned Star Wars tv show that also planned to focus on the grimy, seedier details of the star wars mythos. I'm game.

Hey look, another white human protagonist in a Star Wars game, 'cause there's certainly a real shortage of those in the Star Wars galaxy.

And that's why I hate them. They have this huge universe full of all kinds of people and places and things, and a timeline that allegedly spans thousands of years... but we always have to run into the same handful of people. It makes the "huge universe" look like a background painted on the wall of a tiny room.

Even The Old Republic, though set super-far before A New Hope, has a Han-like smuggler complete with Wookiee companion.

I look at a game like this, and I want to believe in it, but I can't shake the feeling that:

1. There will be Mandalorian armor all over the place, probably on you.
2. The crime boss will be a Hutt.
3. There will be a Zabrak (Darth Maul) henchman.
4. Someone, somewhere has a pet Rancor.
5. If you get a ship, it'll either look like Fett's or Solo's.
6. You'll see at least one Twi'lek female dancer.
7. There will be an assassin droid that at least reminds us of HK-47.
8. You're going to hear colloquialisms that reference Banthas, Gundarks, and Rancors as though every person or every species on every planet in the whole galaxy only knows the same seven animals and uses the same slang.
9. You'll also hear "Sithspit" at least twice. Same reason.
10. Lightsabers. Lightsabers everywhere. Expect double-bladed, too.
1: Well, since the days of Boba Fett (or Jango Fett if you want to be chronological about it), Mandalorian Armor has been a calling card for Bounty Hunters. It's also just good armor, so why not?

2: Because no-one else can mobilize the necessary capital or influence. The Black Suns are about the only crime organization in the SW universe that WASN'T run by Hutts.

4: They're cute, they make good guard dogs, and it's really not all-around bad if you can use your worst enemies as a substitute for pet food.

5: The Corellian YT-1300 Transport (Hans was a modified version) is a popular and durable cargo ship, and the fact that an idiot like Han could modify it speaks for itself. As for the Slave One (Fett's Ship), it's a KDY made police ship, and Jango only got it by stealing it. You'll probably have to buy and then modify your own. Or steal one.

6: And your problem with this is...?

7: After the fall of the Republic after the purging of the Jedi, combat Droid production kind of fell off. Combat-enabled droids made after the rise of the Empire tended to look the same.

8: They are among the most common animals seen by the people who travel the most: Smugglers, Bandits, Pirates, Outlaws, Traders and other people who keep on the move. The theory of cultural diffusion reasons that eventually, to make things easier, the slang would become unified, so that thirteen people using thirteen slangs for one word wouldn't get everyone totally confused.

9: Same reason as 8.

10: This: probably not likely. You may find one or two older ones (Let's not forget that Corran Horn found his whilst escaping a buried Super Star Destroyer), or be confronted by someone USING one, but that doesn't nececessarily mean they're trained (Corran again). Most likely, the most you'll see of lightsabers are the final boss, or you or an enemy pointlessly flailing around with one and being completely useless.

So, no force powers or anything like that? So it's a generic third person shooter with the Star Wars label tagged on to make a few extra bucks?

I just want to take this opportunity to point out that this is the second time that i've scooped the Escapist. I started a thread on this this morning and suddenly... announcement! I'm thinking someone needs to offer me a job :)

More to the point, why is nobody else upset about the chest-high-walls/cinematic equals bs QTE's part of the whole announcement?

My bad, I must've mistaken Battlefront with it twice.
