One wonders what Trump would need to do to convince his followers he was up to no good.
See, this is how you're looking at this whole thing wrong. It's not what Trump does or has to do, it's that Trump is Trump. That's it. Trump is Trump. Nothing else matters, nothing that he does or has done matters - He is Trump. It starts and ends there.

For his followers to be convinced he's up to no good he would have to stop being Donald J. Trump.

To be fair, I don't think that explains the ~45% of voters that backed him at the last election, although they may represent a significant proportion of the, er, ~50% of Republican Party members who currently favour him for president, bearing in mind that is a vastly smaller pool of people.
Money explains the rest of it. Tax free political "donations", ie under the table bribes. Two kinds of people support Trump - his cultists who believe Jewish Cuban ghosts stole the election from Trump and that Obama is a lizard person from Planet X, and the people who sell the first people "survival" seeds and limited edition Trump coins to use in the new economy after we defeat the lizard people invasion.
If Trump can be said to have an accomplishment, its that he's shown the grifters and con-men of the world was easy marks Republicans and conservatives in general are. Remember these are the religious people. One you start believing in walking on water and magic babies and returning from the dead, its real easy to believe in ghosts and lizard people. And just like every faith before Trumpism, you need to pastors and faith leaders to collect donations every holy day and not pay taxes on their giant temples.

I've heard a pretty consistent answer from Trump followers on all those Jordan Clepper interviews and it's always that "well I don't agree with some things, but I believe in his message." and it's never clear which message that is. I think that's because it's really just his personality they want. They just want a connor mcgregor for politics. They want someone to be loud, be a dick, and to blame "The swamp". Somebody joked early about trump embracing LGBTQ+. I genuinely believe they'd shrug that off, or say it's an apart of his secret agenda, or just decide his view makes sense in some convoluted context. Pretzel logic.

"You can't punish Trump for doing that! You have to punish Biden for doing it instead! That's only fair!"
You can tell when they were just watching Fox and not the actual news, because they complain Biden had documents too. Yeah that's true. Trump wasn't charged with having documents. He was charged with keeping documents after being ordered to return them. And the Government apparently has the phone calls and conversations of Trump saying he wants to keep the documents and hide them from the Government.
He's still likely not going to face any punishment, but they have him pretty dead to rights. What'll happen is the jury will come back guilty, with a punishment of say a $5 fine per document, and then the Judge, in the name of "national unity" will set aside the verdict and release Trump with their sincere apologies.
And politicians on both sides will say how great America is, and how the Justice system did its work, and we should just be happy to live in a nation that no one is above the law.

Let's also not forget that Pence had documents as well, but both he and Biden turned them over when requested.
It's possible they were taken improperly, or possible it may have been a mistake. We don't know. However, with Trump, the evidence suggests that he did know.

Exactly. It seems like the Government really really really really didn't want to charge Trump and gave him literal years worth of chances to make good. This is a terrible day for the US, its allies, and all the shared national security. Now fucking Canada and Israel are asking if Trump was selling their nuclear secrets to Russia and Pakistan. Now England is worried their spies in China are compromised. This sets such a bad precedent for US law - not the indictment or trial, but just the need for it. Trump really stepped in the shit here. This will be the biggest, most painful, hate filled and dividing trial is US history.
I don't believe in the anti-Christ, but even he would struggle to hurt the US more than Trump did just by being a dumb lazy shit.

Meanwhile, Trump vows to go after everyone who "wronged" him if he's re-elected.

This is a terrible day for the US, its allies, and all the shared national security.
Even our staunchest allies are going to think twice before trusting us with anything now, because we might elect some manchild who cares more about impressing people than protecting the country.

To clarify, I was (somewhat flippantly) thinking that if Trump decided that he wanted people to think he was up to no good, he'd have a hard time persuading them.

Between that and the discord leak, I'm hoping they start to really limit access to information cause otherwise it seems like a fool plan to trust the US.

Do you believe that the alliances that the USA has with its allies are entirely one-sided, or that there are clear benefits to the other party?

It's the latter. Some of America's critics make the mistake of imagining its allies to be mere puppets without their own national interests, their national policy or effective sovereignty, purely in thrall to America. Its a cold war mindset that hasn't moved on.
