I find it funny how people defend Mojang with the strangest arguments.

Lets be serious for a Moment here, Minecraft is barely a game, it has no goal, there is ~nothing~ to do, unless you make it happen, nor does it possess a great atmosphere like Systemshock or Bioshock or any Halflife game.

Is there a sense of accomplishment as you fight trough the game, use your cunning and wits or sheer brutal power to overcome the obstacles in the game?

Has the game even an useful Tutorial or user friendly interface...not really. Are there new story arcs or new content included, well if you consider a update with an half year of development, which turned out to be bugged and just include a few minor features new content..well there you go!

Now don't get me wrong, I myself played with this toolset, even currently doing it, but do you really have "fun" like in Halflife, running alone trough an alien infested City/Lab, exploring new areas with new enemys?

Are you so into the game, having such an immersion in Games like Thief, Condemmned or Mass Effect, where you actually fear for your Character, while I myself let Steve plumming towards the ground, loosing half his livebar, because I can't be arsed to take the longer route?

I always hear people talk about the Time they are spending in Minecraft and I'm wondering, are you really having fun digging trough layers upon layers of stone, just to find a few resources here and there, that will most likely be directly fueled into your mining equipment again, just so you can mine more, because you need so much Stuff to build even the smallest things and you will never build anything small, because you want your "Imagination" to be big and presentable. Sure you spend a lot of time in Minecraft, but most of the time thats not fun.

To finish it up, I think Minecraft won't really hold his ground for that much time, in the end you will have build everything that you wanted and than that's it, there is no reasons to replay the game and nothing Notch could add would ever change that, because its a game, where you provide the fun, unlike other big games, where the Game provides fun for you, give it one or two years and Mojang is probably forgotten, maybe holding afloat with his mod community, but I just can see that the game has such a huge lifespan, if you look at the recent development speed of new content, its just ridiculous.
Yes there is stuff to do. Stop playing in peaceful.

oh, Mojang won this year, did they?
and it pissed of a lot of people did it?
at least we know who will be out first round next time, won't we?

anyway, well done to Minecraft-i mean, Mojang (i'm always getting those two mixed, silly me), while i'm not their biggest fan, i will admit i would prefer them winning than Zynga winning.

why were they even put on that list when they only made 1/2 game?
I fixed for you, and in the spirit of being a popularity contest, Mojang was voted in via popular vote by the pub club members.

Congrats Mojang! I don't care what anyone else is saying currently, I think Minecraft is fantastic. I am kinda' bummed Valve didn't win though, they are my favourite game developer after all.

Meh. Bravo Notch you little bastard. Next time don't be such a smug little git before you've even won it.

Minecraft winning is interesting in that it determines, at least insofar as an Internet popularity poll is concerned, capability for community crafted content > technical prowess of a given game. This is somewhat reflected in how Valve only got as far as it did bolstered by those who loved the community-made Tf2 and Garry's mod videos.
Well, let's not forget that TF2 was originally community driven because TF1 was just a mod.

Yeah... this seems really lame to me. I guess this community isn't as smart about games as I'd hoped. Oh well. I guess idiots are everywhere.

It's just not appropriate for a "best developer" award to go to a dev with only one title. I mean, clearly Minecraft is one of the best games of the year, probably the last few years, but to be a really great dev you need to be able to do more than produce one great game. You need to be able to rinse and repeat a few times.

Mojang's capability as a developer still remains very much to be seen.
Developer. Of. The. Year.

What the hell have any of these other developers brought out this year?

I don't actually know how minecraft ended up beating the gigantic corporations of gaming, but I don't think I mind a new innovative game beating top-dollar companies we've all grown used to.

Look, I appreciate Minecraft in the way I still appreciate putting legos together, and Lord knows I've spent too much time on both. However, Valve who has made the two greatest games of all time, being beaten is somewhat...unsettling. I would appeal to the team at Escapist, that the criteria being set henceforth, be that the developer has to actually have a title released, before being a candidate in the tournament. Seems only fair.

All these complaints basically boil down to "MOJANG SHOULDN'T HAVE WON BECAUSE THEY HAVE ONE (questionably unfinished) GAME!"

It's still a game. And opinions win in competitions more than loyalty to a certain developer.

So, I have to ask,

I'm pretty sure Minecraft wasn't made in 2010.
