Mark Hamill, you will be missed.
So much for the hope of him reprising the role in a live action film.

I know everything has its ending and while it was never stated why he will be retiring the role, I do understand that sometimes people get tired of doing things and want to move on to something else. The reason why I say that is because this thought occurred to me: I wonder what it feels like for someone to end something that so many consider to be the craftsmanship of greatness?

EDIT: God that was cheesy.

While this is a pity, I'm not exactly crushed by this. Excellent though Hamill's performance is, I didn't especially like the Batman animated series. I grew up with Jack Nicholson as the Joker firmly planted in my mind, so this doesn't faze me much.

If anything, I respect Hamill immensely. He got horribly type cast after Star Wars ended and I think his true calling is voice acting. He's fucking brilliant at it. It'll be a shame to see him leave.
Also knowing him hes probably starting to feel like hes getting typecasted again. He is always looking to do something totally different.

That'll be a shame. As far as I'm concerned Hamill is the Joker, everyone else is a pale imitation. ...except maybe for Jack Nickleson.
Now before all you Heth Ledger fans jump down my throat, let me qualify that statement by saying that I did think Heth Ledger's performance was brilliant, magnificent even; I'd personally give him an Oscar for it if it were up to me. Wait, didn't he get an Oscar for it? I don't know. Anyway, despite that though, it just didn't feel like the Joker to me.

to be honest, Ledger's Joker didnt feel like the psychotic prankster we have had for so long, instead he just felt like another psychopathic murderer.

still a good incarnation of the Joker, mind you, but the Joker's insanity is waht to me, makes the Joker, and it will be a sad day when we no longer hear Mr. Hamill's laugh while staring at the Jokers smile:
Yep I agree with both statements. Ledger was a decent madman but just did not have the jokery vibe.
I was just watching Dark Knight and realized that Heath Ledger's Joker, for many of the lines and scenes, appears to be channeling Richard Dreyfuss. I submit this clip to the jury:

OT: Too bad about Hamill. I feel that other people can do a good job. Didn't mind Joe DiMaggio doing the Joker in Under the Red Hood. I do think that whoever picks it up next will need to step out of Hamill's shadow to take the character somewhere else if it's going to be any good. Imitation is alright, but innovation is what's really needed.
