Actually trees don't give off all that much oxygen. Last I heard, 90% of Earth's oxygen comes from sea alge. Kind of a shame about the tree though. I wonder how long it could've lasted before it died on its own.

That was the bit of the article where I started laughing too. It makes it sound like meth was more of a hobby she was passionate about than something an addicting substance that turned her into some sort of zombie looking thing.

She'll be dead in 50 years. That tree is 3,500.

Thank you so much! it baffles me how anybody could harbour feelings for something that does not think or feel. I hate how we can value a plant or animal more than a person, regardless of who that person is.

I find it rather hard to value a person who doesn't contribute anything to society and in fact detracts from society not only by burning the tree but by the crimes that she has undoubtedly committed to get money for her little smokey hobby over a tree. Any tree really, it doesn't even have to be a 3,500 year old tree, it could be the tree I planted in my back yard when I was 7 years old, I'd still be pissed if some "meth enthusiast" had set fire to it. The best thing we could do for her is to provide her with a couple of pounds of meth and put her in a concrete room with it so she couldn't burn down anything else of value.

I'm by no means trying to start a 'value of human life' debate here but some would say that tree was more valuable than a junkie's life.

And if not, how many burnt/felled trees does it take to equal the value of one human life? Don't misconstrue me here, I'm not a tree-hugging hippy but I find it hard to feel anything for a burnt out meth head who negligently destroyed a friggin 3500 year old tree.

Not to mention the harm to tourism. Its the 5th oldest tree. Do you have any idea how valuable that is to any local tourism economy? She just destroyed something the state could use to bring tourism in.

When she needs that much rehab, she is looking at negative worth. That tree probably could have brought in a lot of money.

Er, by that logic though, she's a net gain for any neighbouring state who'd get some of that tourism money the state is losing.

American tourism is pretty shaky as it is, and its pretty concentrated in areas. It has declined since 2007.

A despicable act of murder-vandalism, to boot! My sincere condolences to the tree's family and patrons. I must weep, for I am deeply saddened by the untimely loss of such a beautiful tree. The life of a sapling will go with little sadness, yet 'tis the oldest trees which are the most revered, more than many a centegenarian human. For the immovable giant has seen not just seen one century, but over three hundred; and its loss seems more tragic than that of humanity itself.

I think the news report has got it's figures muddled.

Judging by the photo, it should be "3,500 year old Meth Junkie burns down 26 year old tree".

Well it depends on how you define a tree. It also depends on what criteria you use to describe something being the same plant. There are several clonal plant colonies that are far older and some are pretty easy to describe as the same plant like creosote bush rings (there are in California, and some are between 10,000 and 12,000 years old). There is also Pando, which is, well you have access to wikipedia. Look that sucker up. Quite possibly the oldest, largest, and heaviest organism in the world with some arguing it's nearly one million years old.

Sure the trees you see above ground are not nearly that old, but the interconnected root system below the ground sure is.
