I'd just like to say, I called this in early 2002 when I discovered Microsoft made a game console.

Initial reaction: "Microsoft... hardware? This won't end well."
Yeah because Microsoft keyboards and mice have always been unreliable, right?
sort of a different level of hardware there, bud... also yeah, they've never been very tough.
It's hardware and I used Microsoft keyboards and mice for years with no trouble at all. These days I use Logitech because it's cheaper but I still wouldn't think twice about buying a Microsoft wireless desktop.

What do you do with your keyboards and mice, throw them against the wall?

The 360 was junk until recently, the original XBOX wasn't that reliable either but to say Microsoft hardware always sucked is stretching it.
I'll give you that... though I've worn out a few Microsoft mice through normal use (left button goes pretty quickly... but those were rubber-ball 2-buttons back in the 90s) and have yet to damage my Logitech (had the same one over 10 years now). I've never had a Microsoft keyboard... but I was mostly being cheeky. Like I said, it's a different level of hardware we're talking about here.

Why I assumed Microsoft making hardware wouldn't end well was my experience with their approach to designing the Windows OS. "Keep it simple, stupid" isn't in their lexicon.
To make a few parallels, the original Xbox was their first foray into a new frontier... like Windows 95. They started off with a lot of bugs and problems, fixed most of 'em in overcomplicated ways... and about the time they got it running smoothly (Win98SE = last run of the original Xbox), they went and tried to redesign it from the ground up for performance (Win ME = first run Xbox 360). I'd say now they've got the 360 to the point where it could be considered nearly as reliable as Windows XP beta2. Expect the console version of Windows Vista to be their next release.
Not to be mean but me comparing their keyboards and mice to a console is certainly much closer to reality than you comparing the Windows OS to console. Windows is software where as a keyboard/mouse is hardware.

Windows may have been less reliable in the past but it's always been king. You could run Windows 95 or you could run DOS, comparing those two...I took Windows.
I think you're wrong on both counts there. Comparing a mouse to a game console is rather like comparing a random number generator to an OS. OS<->console is a much closer comparison due to the complexity of the undertaking.
Also, in 1995 there was DOS, there was Windows, there was OS/2, and there were various distros of Linux. I did a lot of experimenting with Red Hat in high school...

Seriously, you don't think a keyboard and mouse are hardware? A console is hardware. Microsoft hardware up till the XBOX was solid.

You're moving the goalpost, now it's because Windows was complex just like a console, I give up.

if you didn't know, a RNG is something a seventh-grader can crank out in visual basic in about 40 minutes.

You say I'm comparing apples to oranges, I say you're comparing apples to carribean fruit salad. We've never had the same goal post. Good idea to end this here, our experiences are too different and we'll never see eye-to-eye without a very long discussion.

I'm on my third. The first RROD'd after about two years, the second had an overheating problem, and was the refurbished one that I got for free when my first died, so of course that one is a bit more liable to break than a new Xbox. I also don't see why people whine and complain about Live so much, it's only $60 a year in the US. That's pretty low, especially when you think that about 10 million people pay about $180 a year for only World of Warcraft, that's not including the price of the game and the expansions.

I've had my 360 for 3 years now and haven't had any problems that I didn't cause (Once spent half an hour trying to buy MS points with an expired credit card) And the only RRoD I know of was because the owner wasn't looking after it properly. I am only just getting into the modding side of PC gaming and am enjoying it so far and it doesn't seem it would be to hard for Microsoft to include something similar to Steams Workshop, I mean it isn't THAT much different from Halos custom maps, same game just different bits.

Steam is only licensing you use of the games
All software is licenses, you don't own your Xbox games either. Get over it.
Sure I do. I can take the disc (remember those?) for practically every game I own and put it into a friend's Xbox and have it work just the same way. Unless the Microsoft repo team comes to my house to confiscate my game discs, I call bullshit.
No, you don't. All software, be it games or operating systems, are licenses. You own the disc, and that is all you own ASIDE FROM THE LICENSE FOR THE SOFTWARE ON THE DISC. It's been that way for easily over 20 years, no amount of denial or disbelief is going to change that.

Since seeing many friends get RROD', I've always been dissatisfied with the quality of the Xbox combined with Microsoft's weak services. I've always been a Sony fan boy, and will continue to be. I wish all you Xbox owners the best of luck with the 720.

I am now on my fourth xbox where my first 2 had RROD and third had trouble with the huge bar thing continously turning off and the dvd driver not closing properly. My fourth xbox is the limited gears 3 one which comes with 2 gears of war controllers both of which are screwy. The one had its b button get caved in after 2 weeks and the second continously loses battery power over and over. This is my 5th xbox controller to mess up.
Four Xboxes, and five controllers, and you've never once wondered if YOU were a factor in any of those breaking? Shit, must be easier to blame Microsoft.

And just look at their live service, where it costs developers 40 thousand dollars for a simple patch on their games. They lured a bunch of small independent developers and with the new update beat them in a corner and charge developers huge amounts of money to put games on the arcade.
Proof?

With the new patch we are bombarded with advertisements,
Bombarded.

You mean that itty bitty little one-inch square at the bottom right?

and they have the guts to raise the price on live for something which really should be free.
Yes, because the PS3's free online system has so much going for it. They raised the price because they could. XBL is damn popular and they know it. You know it. I know it. The cost of gaming is going up, it's not a Microsoft only thing, but I guess it's easier for you to say that instead.

You have to have an active live account to have access to "perks" like netflix (thats a JOKE) and live ruined any communication with their community with their games.
So Netflix is a joke? Or the gold requirement is a joke? Or what? How did anyone ruin the communication between communities? So much vagueness...

Just look at the sorry state of the dungeon defender dlc, microsoft acts like bloody money grubbing tyrants and just look at how it ruins games that thrive on dlc like l4d or team fortress 2.
"Thrive" on dlc? HA. You mean thrive on the fact they're all just Half-Live derivatives that depend on a modding community for success or something utterly retarded like Hat Trade.

You cannot mod ANY game on the 360, which makes people who bought skyrim on the 360 insanely jealous of all the fun the pc community gets to have with user created content. Microsoft simply does not ALLOW us access to it because it contradicts their ideals.
It contradicts with the ideals of consistent fair games, yes. I have Skyrim for the 360, and I'm sure as fuck not jealous about PC mods.

Enough is enough! all microsoft accomplishes is strangling developers with their bullshit, and get away with releasing GARBAGE hardware
Then why is it such a popular platform? Heads up, that "garbage hardware" that played "Full Auto" when it was very first launched in 2005 over seven years ago will still be able to play GTA V in 2013 and whatever the last game is that comes out for it, all without a need to upgrade parts.

so you have to re-buy the console and controller over and over
No, you had to rebuy the console and the controller. Not us. Let's be clear about that.

and they actually have the guts to charge you almost 100$ a year to play games online.
Wait....$35.99 [http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-LIVE-Month-Gold-Membership-360/dp/B0029LJIFG] is the same thing as $100?

Next gen microsoft NEEDS to lose the race because they are literally keeping gaming in the dark ages with their selfish tactics.
Oh really?

In a perfect world everyone would buy games only for the pc so developers / consumers can enjoy freedom and the biggest hurdle for developers would not be the money to make the games, but only their creativity. Will microsoft ever have gems like Cave Story, SOL exodus which is trying to make a space combat comeback, or Terraria? NO, because they ask for way too much money. Microsoft is the equivalent of the church in the dark ages.
This apocalyptic faux summary of the current affairs of console gaming is so fucking stupid that I don't even know how to respond to it. I'm literally speechless.

What is there to defend about the 360 other then brand loyalty?
Game consistency?
Superior online ecosystem?
A complete lack of DRM? (At least, none that matters)'
Way fewer hackers and cheaters?
No system requirements for a game?
Game after game that comes out on 2005 hardware that doesn't require upgrading to run?
Being able to purchase a $90 Original Xbox 360 Pro and still being able to play the AAA 2012 video gaming titles?

I'm sorry, on a scale of 0 to 10, this post warrants "fucking terrible". What an immature and infantile rant...

Yeah it's a nightmare playing in proper hi res with genuine textures and a usable inventory for free. I nearly imploded when I saw how basic my friends PS3 version looked, just awful; the mods are great. Although if I couldn't use them I guess I might pretend to myself they weren't great.

Sorry to hear about your Xbox OP, hope this one doesn't explode. :(
Yeah, let's blame Microsoft for not letting you use those high res textures and a "usable inventory" instead of directing any of it at Bethesda.

Yes, because PSN is totally secure, fast, and reliable. We'll just ignore the past few months though. Because it would be inconvenient.

Nice to see someone else get ripped on other than Sony.

MS and Nintendo get away with so much shit it isn't funny. While Sony gets ripped for the most minor of things.

It is most of the time. It's free. No reports of money stolen yet despite Sony's warning of the possibility of CC theft during the breach.

Better than paying AND having to eat ads. Then get your MS points stolen by hackers through a FIFA game and your only recourse is to call MS where they lock your account making it inaccessible while they "investigate". With luck you get your points back, if no luck then too bad.

I've had one xbox for 5 years now, and have not had one problem with it.

Daily use in the summer and the holidays, weekly every other time.

All of my friends had RROD and have had to replace their mics atleast once, I've had RROD twice and have replaced my mic atleast 4 times already. Also, the battery packs disconnects from the control if you tap the controller.

yeah, pretty shitty stuff.

I also hate XBL for their greediness. Kinda hurts my brain to think they forced Valve to put a price on their free DLC

I haven't seen a mod yet that isn't in some way half-arsed or stands out from the original content like dog's balls.
Nehrim mod for Oblivion.
Project Reality for Battlefield/ARMA
Midas' Magic Mod for Skyrim
Chernobyl Enhanced for STALKER
Prelude for Portal
Insurgency (Source Mod)

The list goes on and on.
Allow me to add:

Stalker Complete for Shadow of Chernobyl
The Specialists for Half Life
Counter-strike, Team Fortress, and so on for Half Life
Russian Army mod for Company of Heroes
Twisted Insurrection for Tiberian Sun

and more...

OT: Ok, I get the same with my laptops, however, a friend of mine had his 360 since launch. Still works. It's not Microsoft's fault, it's who they use. I can only assume that they switched manufacturers since the original xbox, as I have 2 and they work wonderfully. I still use them from time to time even. Sure, they're modded, but meh.

"PRIVACY BREAK IS OK; NO MONEY STOLEN, MORE AT 11"

Got it. Hepatitis is free, it must be better.

FYI' Sony isn't getting ripped for "minor things".

Sony gets ripped for continuously introducing proprietary formats that no on wants because there's already a standard out. (More here [http://www.fastcompany.com/blog/kit-eaton/technomix/memorystick-micro-die-sonys-older-proprietary-standards])
Sony gets ripped for having notoriously bad security on their console networks (which everyone loves to proclaim is free and better).
Sony gets ripped for bringing the world a Cell processor that no one knew how to properly utilize when it came out. It was excessive, expensive, and made multiplatform ports a pain, giving Sony users the shittiest version.
Sony gets ripped for putting a BluRay player into their PS3 before anyone knew if it would win out over HD-DVD. This caused it to be insanely expensive compared to the 360 at launch.
Sony gets ripped for the utterly useless nature of the PSP (except for piracy)
Sony gets ripped for not including DualShock 3 into the controllers at first, deciding that people actually wanted Sixaxis.

Ever wonder why you don't hear about Sixaxis and Move in the news? The list goes on, and on, and on. While Microsoft has made some batshit retarded mistakes, Sony is one of the single-most incompetent tech companies of the century, and I look forward to the day I don't need to hear about another one of their "innovations".
