The guy really overreacted here but also 13 year old M rated.... and the kid probably deserved getting his mouth washed...

"Defenseless kid"? ehm he were 13 right I've seen some rather not defenseless 13 year olds..

But the guy could just mute or leave the game and be a grownup. He probably need some anger-management thou... Sure I might get pissed playing games but I'm dead calm again 5 min later

Plus; why is the kid playing the game in the first place? 18 certificate for a reason! /hypocrisy.
The certificate is a guideline for retail and parents, it is not illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to play with parental consent, they simply cannot purchase it.

heartless comment incoming that does not excuse the act in and of itself:

ABOUT ****ING TIME TEENAGE COD TROLLS GET A MESSAGE THAT WORDS HAVE WEIGHT.

Yes, the grown man with a mental disorder probably shouldn't have been playing the shooter in the first place (that's how things like Norway happen). Yes he probably shouldn't have been playing with a kid that he knew personally. Yes he probably shouldn't have taken the game so seriously. Yes the kid was just teasing him - he should get over it.

BUT the anonymity of the internet (and I am not unaware of the irony) allows people to say whatever the hell they want to with no repercussions from anyone or anything with any real weight. No 13 year old in their right mind would taunt a competitor in a school basketball game or even a pick up game with random strangers at the park in the same way that most COD players trash talk (especially teenage players) online. If this kid was flipping this guy so much crap that he got angry enough to leave his game, leave his house, find this kid, and violently attack him, the mother probably shouldn't have been letting her child either A: play the game in the first place (reminder - M for Mature, online interactions not rated by the ESRB) or B: say the things that he was saying.

I mean really, no it's not the most mature thing to do but in the real world, you start slinging insults the way they fly in online multi-player at people, you start a fight. I'm not saying the kid deserved to get beat up by a 46 year old with an improper grip on reality but I in no way pity the troll that antagonized somebody into making him think before he spoke. At the end of the day its a game and it should be taken as such; both in the way that it's outcome shouldn't be taken very seriously but also in that all participants are there for their own entertainment and the way old school gamers have allowed the new breed of Cod-heads to mutate the image of how gamers treat other people is disgusting.

I had a loooong essay typed out in response, but I'll summarise it...

Good, pity the mum intervened... little nappy rash infected sods need a wake up call that there is REAL people behind those nicks, and those people can get mad... like those memes the brats are so fond of copy pasting , u mad ? FUUUUUUUU...

... would love to post that one with the big mad grin picture.

In other news , kids beats man in game, man beats kid in real life ... LOL!

While it was obviously wrong for the man to go and throttle the kid, I may as well say what I'm really thinking: the kid did kind of deserve that, I'm sure I'm not alone in saying a fantasy has cropped up in my head of doing something similar when I've had some nasally little kid mouthing off at me in CoD.

Maybe now the kid will think twice before mouthing off at someone in COD next time.

On the other side of the coin though: a 46-year old man getting this worked up about a defeat in an online game? At that age, shouldn't he have more pertinent matters to get that worked up over?

Just wondering, where is it you are from? Don't know if you are from the UK or not or are familiar with how the games are rated here. While some games use the "guidelines" ratings system, games like Call of Duty are slapped with BBFC ratings. Sadly, they're not guidelines.

If a film has an 18 rating like this, then if your under that age, you shouldn't get to watch it or buy it, period. Same goes for Black Ops. The game had an actual 18 rating, therefore there was simply no way the kid should have been playing it. I'm guessing he doesn't look 18, so no doubt the game was purchased for him by a "responsible" adult.

Does he know there's a mute function? Does he know his headset isn't sewn to his head? Does he know CoD's ONLY A GAME?
first i'm not going to support this man in assaulting a moron (ok maybe a little the kid did deserve a good dose of reality but attacking the kid was wrong yelling and swearing at him in person would of scared the shit out of him though) but the it's just a game thing is what bugs me how is insulting a person through a game any different from bullying someone in real life that is what threw him off the deep end not the game but the asshole he was playing with.

The history of mental health bit will be conveniently "forgotten" when this story makes its round in the media outlets of Fox News.

I support what the guy did. I'd love to be able to walk into the room of every internet tough guy who thinks they can call me the N word simply because they are a thousand miles away when they would be picking their teeth up off the floor if it was face to face.

Let me get this straight, going to Facebook Memorial pages to talk shit about the deceased to the grieving family is perfectly alright and within freedom of speech, but apparently talking trash in an online match is grounds for getting your ass kicked?

No it doesn't seem it is alright or protected speech, at least in the UK, trolling is illegal.

Also yes, yes it is grounds for him getting his ass kicked. He wouldn't go up to someone in the street and shout rubbish at them, so why shouldn't his internet nards get him in trouble?

Wait, what happened to game ratings and good parenting?
Best comment in this thread. Parents shouldn't buy a game for their 13 year old when it clearly says "18" on the box. I guess the parents bought the kid a copy of "A Serbian Film" while they are at it.

First off, to all the people who are saying that 13 year olds shouldn't play M rated games...how old were you when you started playing M rated games? If you were under 17, aren't you being a bit of a hypocrite?

Secondly, how the hell can you justify a man breaking into a kid's home and strangling him over trash talking on a game? You're probably the same people who think it's all right for gang members to bash someone for insulting their girlfriends or whatever.

I'm not saying that the kid didn't deserve a good slap upside the head. That would have been awesome. Or just letting the kid know "I found you. Others can too. Watch what you say." But strangling him? Reminds me of the news story of the guy in Canada who shot a driver with a crossbow he had in the trunk because the victim cut him off in traffic. Bet you guys think that was funny too. After all, if he didn't want to get shot with a crossbow, he should have driven more respectfully.
My first M rated game was Halo 1, which I got when in the Christmas of 2007. When I was 16. And that took a few huge arm-twists and about a year of convincing my parents that I was old enough to play an M-rated game. From then until I got a job the following year, and some time after, they paid a lot of attention to what I played and knew the games that I owned.

Yes, I have room to ***** about thirteen year olds playing a game they just plain shouldn't be.

And I've never been one to give trash talk. Even as an adolescent. If I'm going to badmouth someone, it's going to be someone that deserves it and they'll be physically there.
Fair enough. My first M rated game was when I was around 13. Die Hard Trilogy 2 on the Playstation.

And I never gave trash talk either, but I never thought it was all right to strangle someone who was trash-talking either.

Still, at least you aren't being hypocritical in your M rated gaming stance, like I'm sure a few people on here are.

So... what was a 13 year old doing playing Black Ops in the first place?

Sure, the guy shouldn't have assaulted the kid, that's obvious enough. But that's a bit of a parenting fail there, don't you think?

I'm of the opinion that you should have to wait until your balls have dropped in order to play any M (or equivalent) rated game.
