This is a game, in BETA, that's all the difference really. He works weekends so that his Beta-testers won't have to play a buggy game
Yeah, his beta-testers who paid him for it.

"This is a beta" stopped being a viable explanation for things some time ago.

No, we paid for the finished product, but we get to play the beta until release. If "the game is not finished yet" is not an excuse, what is?

Terraria is quite different then Minecraft and not just because its 2D so it isnt just another clone and yes, Notch should defenitly learn something from it with what to do with the survival mode.
Yeah, I don't mean it is a clone, I know it's similar in some ways and different in some, but I haven't played it so I wouldn't know. What Notch said about clones was a response to if he was upset about Fortress Craft, the XBLA "totaly not minecraft game"

I knew you guys liked Minecraft but I didn't know you had so much bias that you would not even mention the real issues with this patch.

1.6 is the worst thing to ever happen to the game. It intentionally breaks boats in ways that ruin every world I and many others have ever made. It drained the fun out of my favorite SMP servers. Up until now I've been encouraging people I know to buy the game. I no longer do so, I regret the positive things I have said about it, and I no longer play. I am tired of making mods to correct Mojang's bad decisions; I am done.

I don't think there is one.

Now ask me if I think it needs excusing.

*assumes you ask*

No, not really. Additions to games tend to come with problems. Is it ideal? No, but he's not charging for the added content, either, so I'm okay with it being briefly problematic while it's getting the kinks worked out on its way in.

Yeah, I wouldn't really call it fixed yet. Though when I checked Notch's Twitter feed to see the current status, I couldn't help but notice this gem:

P.S. Thanks
Well at least he isn't one of the "minecraft copy!" bandwagon people, maybe he can take some tips from terraria!

OT: Gotta hand it to Notch, when he messes up he fixes it ASAP
He actually promoted Terraria on his Twitter. Even read somewhere that the game can thank it's success in some part to Notch's twitter. Don't ask me to confirm though, it could all be in my head.
He even said that as long as you weren't actually using his code, any Minecraft-clones could just go ahead, he wouldn't sue, or even be mildly annoyed
Tarrarai looks really fun, sort looks like a Castlevania and minecraft hybrid

On topic, there is still tons of annoying shit broken. I think the worst is the lighting not updating correctly, but I only whip out diamond picks for obsidian, then put them back up. Had a friend hunting cactus on our temp SMP server relogging every 7 seconds due to terrain not updating, but I never saw that myself.

Notch didn't fix anything, I've ended up fixing my own damn Minecraft. Such a graphically simple game shouldn't kill my computer, but it did until very recently. Luckily I found out that storing the map file on a RAM disk partition greatly helps, and now I've finally got back into it. Before it was basically unplayable even on Tiny view distance, now I can have smooth lighting, detailed graphics and normal view distance (far if I feel like pushing it).

I have found out that Minecraft is a game that needs to be smooth to be enjoyable, but now that I can finally play again I have to say I'm quite impressed with some of the additions. The weather system, maps and trapdoors in particular are all great. I haven't actually come across any bugs, as of yet... (other than the crippling performance hit that has been around for months and I had to fix myself).

FOR FUCK'S SAKE, how long will it take this idiot to start a rolling beta!!!

Invite 1,000 or so people to participate in early versions of the next update, and release only to them. When (not if) they encounter bugs, patch those, and then release the version that works for all 1,000 to the public.

Notch is absolutely horrible at releasing working patches. I'd say Valve is equally bad, but we've at least heard they TRY with internal and somewhat-external playtesting.
You're joking, right? Right?
It's an open beta. It means the bugs will be there, and they will be fixed as soon as possible. The point of having an open beta, is that you much, much easier spot bugs. Who do you think spot more bugs - 20 people, or 2 million?

I'd say Terraria owes Steam more than Notch, but hey.

In any case it's not like you all don't have stuff to do in your lives right now, take a break, check back in a few hours

So you want a beta for the beta? 0.o

OT:

It seems to be that whatever notch do, somebody will hate him for it.

I still can't get my old save to load, but I just played about 5 hours in a new world. I've almost got my immediate surroundings mapped, and I found a wicked natural valley with an overhanging cliff and a waterfall by a small beach. The problem is that my tools keep randomly disappearing (diamond pick-axe :[ ) and I had to stop because it freaking crashed. Oh, and why are trap doors only on the bottom parts of blocks? It looks dumb unless you have a block adjacent to your hole that you can place it on.

Would you care to explain to me just what you did there? I'm having some performance issues as well... I'm not very good with computers though, so you'd want to speak to me as if I were a 3rd grader, if you'd be so kind, of course.

It still has huge bugs created by the 1.6.x patches. For example lighting problem when mining (it doesnt spread properly leaving areas dark), tools break regardless of condition upon use. Oh and boosters! (Yes I know it was glitch, but it was a glitch I enjoyed dam it!
