The ability to move a respawn point is great, I wonder if compasses will point to your current respawn, that could make mining towards something much easier - just put a bed where you're going!

PERFECT! I've been waiting for some furniture to put in my huge, empty rooms. What will you need to make it? Some wood and wool I'm assuming? Maybe some feathers for the pillows?

The second phase might clue us in on the sorts of single-player changes Mojang Specifications has in mind for the future of Minecraft. RPS says that an update will hit sometime in March which will turn beds into a respawn point. When players die, they'll appear in the last bed they slept in.
Why isn't this being added in right when beds are released? This is not hard to do. Modders have already created blocks that reset your spawn location, and the amount of code needed to make such a block is incredibly short and easy to implement. I can't figure out why beds need two updates to work properly other than the developers being incredibly lazy.

I'd rather have some more things to mine and collect, like silver ore or something, but this is cool to. It'll certainly help when I eventually fall off my massive base tower that i plan to build completely out of glass.

Respawning in the last bed you slept in could create some awkward situations if it wasn't yours.
*respawns in another players bed*
Player: What are you doing in my house?
Forsty I re-spawned... I kinda slept in it before...
*another player respawns*
Other player: Frosty? O_O

Bad Kraken, having a go at Mojang.

As someone who is on a server that has used ServerPort (the mod whose code I assume you mean b) That code is buggy as Hell, give them a break if they are wanting to iron out bugs. granted, it's a beta, but people will complain of more buggy features > less new stuff per update.

Looking forward to this. I'll likely be playing the DA2 demo Tuesday, but I'll get a crack at these beds Wednesday or Thursday.

*expletives*

I spent the best part of two days building a sandstone temple (I spawned next to a mountain sized sand dune, who wouldn't?!) and was forced to hide in it every night and twiddle my thumbs until the sun came up. A bed would have halved my build time...

A lovely, comfortable cobblestone bed.

Bigger improvements would be nice: some in-game help, for example. So you would never have to read the wiki to know how to craft stuff.

I don't like it. Bed's to restore your health are a good idea, but what's to stop players from sleeping every single night, thus rendering the entire inclusion of night meaningless?

Player-made spawn points?!

Oh thank, God!

Someone has been hearing my prayers...

They'll probably make the materials to make the bed either vast in quantity of ridiculous in rarity.

Just to balance it out.

simples: whilst you're at home, or building inside a major project, night becomes no bother; it's when you're out and about, exploring or whatever, that night makes an actual gameplay impact. I think it's a good gameplay addition, preventing people from just tabbing out when night falls.

Or you wake up to that lovely hissing. Tell me, would you want to go to sleep if you've ever heard that? Didn't think so. Or maybe you can only sleep for half of the night to balance it out.

Yippie! And I thought I was going to have to settle for a few blocks of wool and my imagination to serve as a bed. And lucky for me that I've just started a huge house construction project.
