When I think more and more about this I would do this:

1. Shut down minecraft. (Singleplayer/multiplayer)

2. Demand a big..."donation" from the idiots who did it.
And punish those that did nothing wrong? That's just as bad as the cocks that launched the attack.

Honestly, Every time I see a petition or a personal attack on something that is a video game, all my least favorite instincts come up and start shouting "Video game geek losers with no lives".

This is a hobby of Notch's, and they are demanding that he works. Whats more, the next update comes out in no more than a week and a half, which he has made perfectly clear.

They also fail to realize that he is building this entire damn game by himself(Or was).

What a bunch of no life losers.

For the love of God, the man is trying to start his own fucking company! If you would be a little patient then everything would come A LOT faster after he got everything up and running!

Way to go, dipshits.

those hackers are a bunch of assholes aimed to discredit Minecraft fans.
and anyone sympathizing with them is one too!!!!

developing games takes a HUGE afford, and getting everything right can take weeks or several months.
But those consumer faschists who want everything NOW don´t know what HARD WORK is!

Instead of attacking something worthy, like the firewalls of China or Iran to enable free communication.
But no, these guys have no balls. I spit on them!

I am considered to be something of a bitter person, even amongst bitter people... but if this were my game being pummeled, it'd be the last anyone ever heard, or saw, of Minecraft ever again.

Its about time someone stood up to the whining, crying, bitching cesspool that is the Collective Internet, and punched them in the face.

4chan thread claiming responsibility for the attack.... Yep. 4chan had nothing to do with this.
Didn't you read it?

They haven't been on 4chan for several years, or the real 4channers.

It's mostly new ones.
Oh I'm sorry, my mistake. Let me rephrase.

4chan thread claiming responsibility for attack, claiming they aren't from 4chan, while complaining about newfags..... Yep. Sticking with my original theory. 4chan had nothing to do with this. Whoever posted that thread had nothing to do with the attack either, is what I am saying.

It occurs to me that, if the 4chan group is genuine and the motivation here is to hit his pocketbook by way of affecting sales, we do in fact have a counter-measure. Namely, every day it's down? Hit up his flattr account on his blog. And announce it on 4chan.

Basically, nullify the economic effect.

Actually if you look at his twitter he spent the whole day signing papers somewhere. So no, you are wrong, he wasn't coding beforehand. He wouldn't know how to cope with a DDoS attack, he has passed the problem on to someone else. After 2 months of barely any updates it is about time he worked on a "gigantic update" frankly. Hate it or not, doing this is certainly a way for the hackers to get noticed.
About time? he's been working on it for the entirety of this month. Look, he didn't even notice the hackers beyond an annoyance- all they've done is slow him down. Here, I've compiled a timeline: (in spoilers 'cause this sucker is huge)

Times are taken from Notch's Twitter
Oct 4th

Announces Halloween update
http://notch.tumblr.com/post/1243370641

Oct 8th

Notch posts one of the new block types in his blog, says work on the new "hell" dimension is going well
http://notch.tumblr.com/post/1269865704/work-on-the-new-dimension-is-going-well-heres-a

Oct 10th

Notch posts a preview of the "hell" dimension.
http://notch.tumblr.com/post/1285109161/more-information-coming-next-week-in-some-form

Oct 19th

Notch confirms that update "is going well" (as not behind schedule), even if he missed the date to create a preview for PC Gamer. Confirms the completion of six new block types (5 with unique abilities), a new mob, the hell dimension, and several bug fixes.

Oct 20th -day of first attack-

8:40 Am Notch gets the building of hell portals to work, starts work on teleportation
http://twitter.com/notch/status/27922676423

1:34 PM Notch notices issues with minecraft.net, begins investigating
http://twitter.com/notch/status/27946258663

1:45 PM Notch continues investigating
http://twitter.com/notch/status/27946959391
http://twitter.com/notch/status/27946972958

3:20 PM Notch realizes it is an attack
http://twitter.com/notch/status/27953867423

6:28 PM Notch announces minecraft.net is back up
http://twitter.com/notch/status/27965813137

10:29 PM Notch announces Minecraft.net is under attack again
http://twitter.com/notch/status/27984231275

11:17 Notch gives up, goes to sleep
http://twitter.com/notch/status/27987844040

Oct 21st

Around 7am Notch wakes up, 'gets back' to coding. Says ISP is handling issue now.
http://twitter.com/notch/status/28019689127

Around 8am Notch posts in his blog about the attack, says he doesn't know why it happened.
http://notch.tumblr.com/post/1365758140/the-ddos-attack-continues-ill-just-get-back-to

Around 9am Notch announces he's going into town to sign papers to start his business
http://twitter.com/notch/status/28026704258

Around 7pm Notch announces he's now behind schedule
http://twitter.com/notch/status/28067596873

Also, around 7pm Notch confirms he's finished mobs (plural) and gotten the portals working
http://twitter.com/notch/status/28069675498

Also, around 7pm Notch posts on his blog, including the information that he's signed up for a DDoS protection service and is officially behind schedule.

"Coding wise, I'm officially behind schedule now, but I fully intend to deliver."
http://notch.tumblr.com/post/1368879179/the-final-papers-have-been-signed

As you can see, at the point where he 'gets back to coding' he was not aware of why the hackers did what they did or who they were. He lost about six hours to the first attack and he WAS coding before the attack took place. It took him those six hours to determine it was an attack, during which he was not working or even just goofing off.

As of the 21st he had passed it on to someone else, and he did go off to sign papers, but (and notice this) he did do some coding before going out- he's coding all the damn time. Finally, he announces in several areas that he is "behind schedule", though he does not attribute that to any particular cause.

In no area does he suggest that he's 'noticed' the hackers beyond a mild annoyance. He didn't start working on a massive update because of them, they actually took time out of his schedule during crunch time. That's all they did. They're just grime in the gears of the Update's creation.

And I take issue with your frankly worrying tone that you believe we're somehow entitled to these updates. He says in the terms of service(EDIT License agreement, sorry) he's not sure he'll complete the game, which is partially why it's half the final price to get involved now. What we've paid for is what we've already got access to, and we're just getting these updates for free at this point- akin to TF2's free class updates.

I know his Halloween update is a massive update, I'm pleased to see that he is working on that update as it is a lot of work for his fans, but what the hackers are upset about are the two months before October where he added little to nothing content-wise to the game despite promising to but failing to deliver on the dates, including the BIOMES he is finally releasing with the Halloween update.

As for the point of coding, I concede that you weren't wrong, but never did I say that:
a) I agreed or sympathised with the hackers
b) That the hackers were getting the results they wanted

I simply stated it was an effective way for the hackers to get noticed. However right or wrong their views are, the fact we are now talking about them shows that they got their intended effect; to declare their dissatisfaction with Notch and his updates.

Finally, yes I do believe I am entitled to updates. I know from a legal stand point he could drop the game right now and there would be nothing I could do. I also know that I paid for a version of the game and that the updates just add bonuses. But really, are you saying you'd be happy if he never updated the game again just because he said that might happen? Yes, I expect him to complete the Alpha of the game he is creating especially seeming I paid for a version of it and yes, I expect him to deliver what he promises to the masses of fans surrounding this project. That doesn't mean he has to do it, but it is what I expect of him. Many, if not all, of the buyers of this game would be upset with him if he simply stopped updating and moved on.

One last thing: I am impressed with the dedication of your research, that timeline must have taken you a while, kudos.

I... admit I may have been a tad defensive. Rampant Fanboi-ism can do that to me. (edit: I just realized how this might read and I mean my rampant fanboi-ism, not exposure to external fanboyism) I understand your belief that we are entitled, not in a legal way but in a sort of verbal contract sort of way, to the updates that are incoming. Indeed, delivering what he promises, at least eventually, is what he needs to keep the powerful reputation he's accrued. And I cannot honestly say I wouldn't be rather put out if he declared an end to work on Minecraft after proposing so much more for the future.

And, I may have misinterpreted your statement that it was a way for the hackers to get noticed: Of course we are noticing them. I believed you meant it was a way for them to be noticed by Notch, which colored my response rather heavily, and your rebuttal has made your position much clearer to me.

Regrettably, your statement that "it is about time" for a gigantic update, in combination with my other misinterpretations, gave to me the feeling that you were suggesting sympathy for the hackers. However, while they had similar feelings that there should have been an update by now, I admit that all fans of minecraft must be feeling something similar- We all want to see what's coming next, and so the "about damn time" response is one I'm sure many share when it comes to the eventual arrival of updates. That doesn't necessarily make it right, but so it goes. I apologize for lobbing you into the same camp with the Hackers, it was unjust of me.

*Sign* Anonymous is really amazing, sometimes it hunts down animal cruelty perps, exposes a cult or protests racism. Then it picks on a small indie developer and causes misery to thousands because it has a hissy fit. Hopefully there are real fans in the hacker community who'll be able to trace the IRL details of these wankers so they can face there eternity of goatsection.
The thing is this probably isn't anonymous, These are probaly just some damn newfags who think they are awesome, to get their 15 minutes of fame, Anons wouldn't have reason for attacking minecraft except "For The Lulz", But no its just some dicks who believe that they are ENTITLED to minecraft updates, Shame, It was one of the best community's I've ever played in.....

Ive been playing this game for only a few days and it is, in fact, as awesome as everyone claims it to be. But if someone thinks they can plant a bomb on a bridge, the best thing to do is burn the whole damn bridge down. In Notch's position, I think the best way to take the offensive would be to shut everything down until an apology is heard.
I doubt 4chan would do this. They do some crazy shit, but doing something stupid? Doubtful.
