As a game it blows ass, but that's because it's not really a game, it's a toy, like Legos.
There are no objectives, there is no story and the world is just random, there will be achievements/quests later but those are the lowest form of tasks possible "find a tree / rock / boobies /..."

So buy it if you feel like playing with a toy, otherwise you will get nothing out of it.

1. Yup. Any structure that pops up, apart from hills and mountains, you build.
2. Actually, they spawn anywhere it's dark enough, including caves, and player-built structures. Light prevents them from spawning.
3. Yes, for now. Notch says there will eventually be a story and quests in the coming patches, but at this time, it's just exploring and building.
4. Not yet. Notch says they're coming in future patch, but at this time, it's just exploring and building.

It all depends on how much imagination you have, I know for some of my friends the game seemed incredibly dull and pointless, but I personally found that it's lack of any real story or narritive drive is one of it's biggest strengths. It truly is a completly sandbox game.

If you still feel uncertain, you can always try out the free to play alpha version, which lacks a lot of the new beta content, but still gives you a good feel for the game. Also, check out some youtube minecraft series, My personal favorite is the yogscast, but they don't really need any more advertising.
The limit being your imagination is not true, people use that as some kind of moto for Minecraft but it sure as hell it isnt.

After watching that video (movie/interview thingy with 30m) I lost a lot of respect with Notch, he is limiting the game, he is the reason the game doesnt get better from what it is now. He said that the game is his vision and that the game will only have what he wants. The community has great ideas but since those ideas didnt came from him he wont use them (he says that in the video.

Basicly they should simply let modders create the tools instead of taking months to create a bed. The game should be full of content, then the limit would be your imagination. I want lasers, aliens, boats, robots, quests, jetpacks, vehicles, elevators, etc. Most of this stuff was probably already made by modders but since the updates fuck them up they become useless.

Really? I can't imagine how that would work.

Once the game is complete and out of beta, I imagine the mods becoming useless will happen far less often. I believe Mojang are adding in proper mod support in the future as well.

It's fun sure, but it's infinitely more fun in multiplayer.

Escapecraft has a massive usergroup [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/Escapecraft-Minecraft] on here with a strong community.

So I'll just post the link and go.
I could not, for the life of me, get into Dwarf Fortress. I read multiple tutorials, I watched tutorials, and I even got a texture pack that wasn't as confusing as the ASCII code. Still: Couldn't do it. They just throw information at you, and it's sink or swim.

I sunk.

Minecraft, however, is glorious in it's simplicity.
You could look at the YouTube video of the guy who made the enterprise, or some guy's 10 minute long minecart track, or mob spawning/killing/gathering 'machine'...or you can just play it, and enjoy the small log cabin you made.

I can't really do that in DF. Not in a way that I found 'fun', at least.

It's Lego.
In 3D.
With monsters.
And cake.

Edit: Just realized ordinary Lego is also in 3D...

I am a creative person but I don't find minecraft fun. I find it tedious. I, personally, would much rather fire up the old Autodesk Maya and build stuff that way. It's all a matter of opinion though. Just because I don't play it, doesn't mean I wouldn't recommend it to some people.

Someone bought it for me a while ago, I played it for about 5 minutes and decided it was a nay and gave my account away recently.

For me this game is like crack cocaine. I don't see myself losing interest any time soon (though I can't even play it at the moment).

Hm it sounds kind of interesting and I could be creative but I wouldn't feel any sense of accomplishment if there was nothing to complete and the game is never ending. A lack of story doesnt sound too intriguing either.
Thats the beuty, think of your own story!
Ok So Iescaped the Nazi creepers and now I have to hide wherever this place is!
Ok so that one sucks but shut up!
And some people make adventure maps you can download where you explore a pre built thing to find treasure/avoid traps/ bewbs lol/ fight zombies ect.

I find it pretty awesome. Have you tried looking at some Youtube videos of it? The series starting with this one is a good intro to the game:

The appeal of Minecraft lies in the fact that you run aimlessly around for 5 minutes, figuring out some basic mechanics, just to turn THEN into creative-zombie mode afterwards and go all out " MUST.... BUILD...GIANT...GOLDEN... TOWER/FORTRESS/RUBE-GOLDBERG MACHINE". And then you'll never ever stop again.

I don't think it's fair to say that you'll enjoy Minecraft only if you have a "big imagination." I like to think I'm imaginative; I spend half my days daydreaming all sorts of crazy things but I'm finding after getting FortressCraft that I still find myself at a loss for what I want to build.

I like to have SOME incentive besides building and surviving for the sake of it. My dream would be for Mojang to include randomly generated dungeons full of monsters (if they haven't already, that is) for me to spelunk for awesome loot. No RPG, mind you, but something else to do besides just straight up building.
They have done that, it has been out for ages now.

Very much yay on my part too. I thoroughly enjoy Minecraft whenever I play it, I'm building a kingdom right now, and its a little boring, but whenever I feel like it I sprint off into the distance with my dog Patches and make a new home. There is infinite possibilities in Minecraft, I made a massive house and burnt it down, I gathered many wolves and we has a massive war against the zombies, skeletons, spiders and creeprs at night (I had to wipe the tears out of my eyes as I dug the graves for the dead :*( *cries* )

I would recommend it for someone with imagination, but I would also recommend it to near everyone. You don't have to be imaginative to play it, some people who are unimaginative compensate and build plain castle or recreate towns and scenes from movies and books.

Love it :D
You can play peacful if you just want to build and explore.
But playing normal is more fun because its sorta a challenge.

Basic premise of the game is: what would you do if you woke up in the middle of nowhere?

It looks good enough to me that I don't want to buy it, simply because I believe it has the potential to seriously distract me from things like school work.

It's like playing in a lego box where every once in a while Notch introduces a new piece
