Personally, I didn't like Mirror's Edge much. For one thing, it was far too linear for me, and especially considering this is a freerunning game, that was a big problem. Combat was frustrating, and a few times the game flat out refuses to tell you where to go and how to get there, while throwing a helicopter with a minigun at you.

Make Mirror's Edge 2 more like the Assassin's Creed games (that is, very much open and non linear, choose-your-own-path kind of gameplay) and I might consider getting it.

im surprised at how many mirrors edge fans there are. i really liked the game but everyone else i talked to seemed to hate it. however, my decision to go through the game without killing anyone, made it a very frustrating experience. i shall not be doing that again. i was really happy to see that it was set up as a sequel and didnt even know the sequel had been canceled, so reading this headline made me sad and then instantly happy

Huzzah! Please let this happen!

Does anybody else think that Mirror's Edge has like... the best graphics ever. Even though from a technical standpoint, Crysis and other games do more, I just think Mirror's Edge looks beautiful. Some scenes look completely realistic or better than real life. Like moving concept art. Just goes to show how much better prerendered lighting can look if done right.
Oh yeah! It was a great looking game and fast paced enough to only really need Pre-rendered lighting. I've only played it on my PC and it looks amazing maxed out.

I don't really know what people had against the level design though. If you ask me, it played out more like a first person puzzle game with fast paced action sequences scattered throughout. If I had a problem with how the level played out, I was obviously doing it wrong. It was a good focus on the part of the crew. If it were more of an open world experience, you would have lost some of that graphical brilliance.
Completely agree, there were one or two bits which I found frustrating, that is to be expected. Other than that, I felt the level design was superb, and I'm picky when it comes to that. The graphics were breathtaking, and the art design remained fresh throughout. Overall, it was probably my favourite game of 2009 (when it was released on PC)... Hell, I even liked the cutscenes.

Thank the Gods. I am so hopeful a sequel will arise for this wonderful game. I loved Mirror's Edge, in all it's flaws. It was a great game. A sequel can provide some needed innovation to make the perfect game.

Excellent, I loved the first one, even though it wasn't perfect by any means. The environments were really beautiful, it's great seeing a developer actually using a lot of bright colours in a first person perspective. Unlike a lot of people, I didn't really get motion sick from the viewpoint. Also, for some reason it's deeply satisfying playing an unarmed girl who can kick a heavily armed police officer off a building.

"THIS...IS...wait, what's the name of this city again?"
"I have no idea, we just call it the City."
"Wait, you're telling me that Spider Jerusalem could be down on the streets right now?"

Now THAT would be an awesome cross-over.

I want to see more combat options.

Personally I don't think you should be able to take or pick up a gun at all, but I hate how when you attack a guard you stop, you should be able to deliver some sort of attack without losing your momentum, that would be neat, like a jab at the throat as you run by that stuns him for like 5 seconds or something.
I like your ideas. I agree that shooting was the most unnatural-feeling part of the game. Not especially from a mechanical standpoint but... thematically I guess? I like how a game can, by the very nature of it's design philosophy, make an extremely popular play-style seem innately distasteful. I really tried to play without firing a single shot and found the game punishingly hard until I gave in about 2-thirds of the way through. The fact that I even wanted to go against the flow like that is interesting though.
I did my first runthrough of the game with no guns. The way I see it, what's the point of using guns in the one first-person action game that doesn't make me? I agree that Faith shouldn't even have the option to use guns, but you know what she could use... Melee weapons! Batons, clubs, bats, tazers, and maybe even knives or swords. See, the gun use just doesn't gel with how the game is supposed to be played, 'cause you can't really run with them. But what if you could run and do a bunch of running attacks with melee weapons?

Either way, they need to fix fighting in general so you can fight without coming to a complete stop. Usually in the required combat arenas I just ran around in loose circles until I built up enough Sonic-like speed to slam-kick an enemy dead in one hit, then repeated that strategy.

Oh, and the ninja cops are complete rubbish. 90% of the time, EVEN if you know where you're going you can't freaking outrun those guys.

The rumors of its cancellation are greatly exaggerated

I'm glad it's coming back, but let's just hope the sequel has more variety, running through buildings and jumping on rooftops is boring. I hope they put in wallflips and things like that, along with a freestyle mode, where you are left to run around a massive city. That's why I purchased the first one, if they don't have all of this in the second, I won't be buying it.

Mirrors edge was one of my first games on the current generation of consoles, and one of my favourite despite its flaws.
I LOVE DICE.

Maybe they can do a better job with the plot this time (and length!!!!!!) I think one of the reasons that there was such a divided reception of the first game was then FP running gameplay was really all it offered- without a moving or surprising plot, character connection or identification or much additional gameplay depth there was really nothing to like about it if you didn't enjoy the running in of itself.

Hmm, I wonder what the best way to tell EA that yes, this would be a good game to make would be? Facebook petition perhaps?

Either way, I really hope this happens. Mirror's Edge was a game that I actually dismissed as a JRPG when it first came out and never even looked into it. Fortunately, my mom ended up purchasing it for me for Christmas the next year and I haven't put it down since.

Objectively, it isn't perfect, but when other companies are allowed to release slightly more polished versions of the same game for ten years (Here's looking at you Bungie) or to release games with entirely game-breaking flaws and bugs (Fallout), 'perfection' doesn't appear to be a strong criteria for a good game.

As far as improvements on the game go, I see three major points almost everyone touches on: the guns, the linear gameplay, and the story. these are the points that come up most, so I'll toss my two coppers in the pond.

When it comes to combat, I don't think they should take away the option to use a gun, it presents a hidden moral choice in the gameplay, yes it's easier to grab that machinegun and mow your way through the cops, but it felt wrong, and even on my first playthrough, I found myself preferring to simply evade and outmaneuver my opponents (until I hit the ninja cops, if my city ever gets cops like that, I'm leaving). Perhaps they could explore that a bit, maybe add consequences for choosing the easy way (Like the star rating from GTA, shooting cops will make them call for backup, making later sections even harder?).

Being railroaded along predetermined paths did feel like it cheapened the experience, and some more freedom to pick your path would improve the game greatly. I like the idea some of The Escapists had about opening up the entire city a la GTA and Assassin's Creed, and would give the dev's much more freedom to expand the world and offer depth to why you do what you do through, and I can't even believe I'm suggesting this, side quests and collectables.

As far as story goes, let's face it, it isn't Mass Effect or Dragon Age. But when you get down to the nitty gritty, and Spoilers ahead, be warned, Shepard is an interstellar BAMF who saves the galaxy from an invading race of alien machines and The Warden is saving the world from ugly evil things. What it needs is depth, why is the government 'evil,' what do they do? who is fighting them, what are their motivations, hell, what are Faith's motivations? these are questions that would need to be answered for the story to really shine.

In conclusion, I think Mirror's Edge -needs- a sequel, it is a unique experience and a brand new concept that is literally full to bursting with untapped potential. Do I think that Mirror's Edge 2 will be the next Mass Effect, Bioshock, or Fallout? No, I can wish and dream, and who knows, Dice might pull the rabbit out of the hat and blow our minds, but I think it's got a long way to go before it gets there. On the same note though, I feel that the gaming community on a whole would be worse off if we let this die. If Mirror's Edge gets shuffled to the side to make room for Generic Brown Shooter No.5768, what does that say about the state of our industry?

I really hope they bring out a sequel. All they needed to do was give you more options in attack routes, not just being forced to run right at a firing automatic weapon. I liked not having a gun and being forced to disarm enemies, but with different elevations and more natural cover(no cover system that would mess with the pacing), so you can close distance to your enemies or completely avoid.

How awesome was it, when you finally got to the chasing enemies. And with a full Dolby sound system, hearing them running right behind you, judging their distance by the different surfaces your both running across. Just thinking about the sound you make when you land a big jump onto a steel catwalk, then a second later hearing that same loud landing behind you.

"Runnn, Faith Runnn!"

Gonna go play it right now, while watching RUN LOLA RUN. Then maybe go for a run with the dog, who says videos games don't get you off the couch.

What's all this "far from perfect" stuff all about?
It's one of my favourite games, the only thing I didn't like was how it wasn't long enough.
Every now and then, I go back and finish it all over again. I've done it somewhere near 15 times and it's still just as enjoyable.
I play plenty of other games, but Mirror's Edge is the one I always go back to.

This is great news. Mirror's Edge premise has a lot of promise and I really want to see what they can do with a sequel.
Yea I really liked the free running thing, there are only about 5-10 games in existence that have any sort of free-running
I hope they make it like an open world city thing, like Spiderman was, so you can just run around the city, do package jobs etc.

It was referring to the general opinion of popular critics

Since SC2 has been released and DNF now has an official release date which isn't an act of trolling, it's time for another game which will take over a decade ;D Looks like it'll be either Hitman 5 or ME2.

I 'd love to see a sequel to Mirror's Edge, but I hope they don't change too much about it as I really enjoyed the first one. It really was quite a breath of fresh air amongst all the generic grey and brown of the "modern combat" FPS games.
