Without going onto wikipedia do you know what it is and not just what it isn't?

From what I can remember, it's a solid, and the misconception might have risen from a certain scientist noting that the molecules (atoms?) in glass were arranged seemingly randomly like in a liquid, coupled with people noticing that some old glass windows were thicker at the bottom.

In the most basic sense, I suppose it is melted and reshaped silica.

The biggest thing I hate is when people say chainmail armor is easily pierced. If that was the case, why has it been used extensively since 500 bc? Even today we still use mail for protection against sharks in diving suits and it is used to reinforce kevlar armor to help stop knife attacks (which generally are thrusts). It was THE armor to have until the 12th century transitional period when plate gradually started becoming more viable. Even then, plate was so expensive more soldiers had mail.

It is simple, they are using the wrong mail. They are using butted mail which is a modern creation for reenactments and was only used historically by the Japanese (not as a full shirt, just the bits between sections of plate and in a much thicker gauge than a western mail hauberk). Real battle mail was a mix of riveted and solid rings. Butted comes apart easy since nothing holds the rings together. Riveted/solid rings do not come apart and keep the the weapon from piercing. It acts like kevlar in regards to it staying together and bunching up to stop the incoming blow. Mail's big downfall is it does nothing to stop the blunt force of the blow, which is why axes were effective against the armor. They didn't pierce, but they deal heavy blunt trauma.

Also, plate armor does not make you slow and immobile. Modern soldiers carry upwards of 120 lbs on their backs. Medieval plate weighs between 60-70 lbs. The weight is distributed across your entire body. The armor on the legs and arms is thinner to increase mobility. It is made to fit the individual and be as little of a hindrance as possible.
Also you don't tire extremely quick either. Ever wear those wrist/ankle weights? At first they are a burden but after a month they seem to disappear don't they? Same thing with armor. Wear it long enough and it becomes a part of you.

That rape is about sex. It's not. It's about power, control, fear. Sex is just a "bonus". But everyone fixates on the sex part.

I've heard this a bunch of times but I have a hard time believing that there aren't rapists who do it purely for sex. Where did you hear this idea from?

It's something that comes up in papers and such a lot. I can't give you any one thing, sorry. I'm sure there are rapists who do it just for the sex, but honestly, if someone just wants sex, there ARE easy women and prostitutes to go to. The fear a rapist instill in a woman when they force her gives the rapist a sense of power and control, which is what they want.

Not to argue with you, but there are people who make both misconceptions true... And they are usually the ones who end up famous =/

I dislike the misconception that Asian Awareness month and black pride week are not racist, but having a white pride day/week/month is more racist than Hitler.

Not permanently, obviously, but living like that for a few weeks at a time sounds pretty awesome, given the fact that your climate is nothing short of awesome. Unlike the climate here where we get FOUR SODDING MONTHS OF WINTER with a crapload of snow, and temperatures that range from a mild -2C or so to -30C.

Only 4 months? Where you live, Spain? Where i come from, we only have about 4 months of summer...

That bugs me too. Whenever someone says "I could care less", I go "...Uh...so...that implies that you DO care."

It's pretty silly. I use the proper phrase.

I just read a post on another forum where some guy said that Call of Duty is a faster paced game than Battlefield because Call of Duty has more frames per second.

My brain hurts right now. It really, really hurts.

Anyway, I don't know if that's a common misconception, but it was so incredibly stupid that I had to mention it.

And that most people who claim themselves to be feminists that you hear about these days are women who actually do want female dominance rather than equality.

Personally, I think it's one of those words that is changing definition over time, and we should just let it change. Like you said, the name rather implies that's what it means anyway.
