In other news, McDonalds continues to sell millions of burgers while thousands enjoy their absolutely delicious steak dinner. Film at 11.
A pretty insightful comment!

Its a shame but a lot of people will have bought MW3 purely because they played MW2 and dont know much else. I dont hate MW3 but I think its a shame BF3 didnt come up trumps this time round considering MW3 is mainly just a repackaging of MW2.

Well it's kind of sad that the game sold less copies than MW2 but made more money. Says a lot about overpricing.

Still, CoD is a fun series. I'll be getting it myself in a while.

Christ, the people who complaing about it being "the same game" are seriously missing the point. New features, balances and improvements... the thing about new versions of this is that it creates an ENTIRELY different metagame. Each of these games may have the same basic functions, but on a level beyond "point and click" they're very different. That is why you have people still playing COD4. Not because the campaign was so much better, but because they preferred that metagame. It's the same deal with fighting games.
The evil here however is that they still charge goddamn full price for each one, but you can't fault them for that considering how well it sells. They know it's gonna be a massive success. You want to ask them to make LESS money because it's the nicer thing to do? Video games are an industry, not a bloody religion.

I'm really starting to wonder if Kotick isn't sending his wife out to buy copies and inflate these numbers. Metacritic is full of bad user reviews, and they aren't so much bombs as well described problems with a copy and paste game. If anything it'll probably be the last record it breaks.

so wait, it sold 500,000 less copies then MW2, but made $90 million more?
Maybe they're including subscriptions to COD Elite in their revenue numbers?

But as the numbers and supposed demographic might indicate, dudebros don't care what a bunch of snooty critics think. As long as it provides the same experience as last year with a couple of minor changes and a huge marketing campaign telling you that no one will still be playing MW(x-1) when MW(x) comes out, people will pay $60 for the privilege.

But... why? Why do people keep buying the same game with slightly different setting and slight changes in multiplayer that in the old days would've been enough for a patch or expansion pack?

I just... don't get it..
Their friends are getting it. And the odd person wants to see the end of the story. That's all I've heard. "My friends are getting it" is the number one reason I've heard from everywhere.

They don't want to be left alone on the old CoD while their friends are all on the new one.

I want to find to friend this originated with and just slap him in the face. Not punch, but slap. Not even very hard, just hard enough for him to know I'm insulting him.

I don't either it's a total mystery to me. I think part of it may be because everyone else is getting it, a lot of people are surely just curious what all the fuss is about, buying a copy on that basis alone.

You just described the average League of Legends patch. That game is F2P.

Or most game's patches, or at the very most DLC or an xpack.

i really really REALLY didn't think it was gonna break any records this year...im really disappointed, but least i can take small pride in knowing i haven't wasted £45 on the game again this year and am having more fun with battlefield 3 then i have ever had on ANY of the cod games.

Ah yes peer pressure the ultimate salesman. Personally though I'm a cheap SOB. I won't even get Skyrim until its in a gold edition and 50% off. In the case of MW, it'll be out of style by the time I would get it, so there isn't much point. Still I'm not entirely sure that the truck hijacking wasn't activision employees. And these numbers are based on what exactly? A piece of paper an activision employee came up with? It wouldn't be the first time they went "oops" on some numbers just to try and increase sales or perceptions.

Wouldn't it be nice if you could just magic up space on a disc like you can on the PC. Disc space is very important and because of the shiny graphics which everyone has basically become obligated to try and improve on you can't add new ideas and interfaces unless you pre-planned it. Also, despite my comparison to fighters, they ARE obviously different. The stuff you get from DLC for a "realistic" shooter on console is unlikely to have enough leeway to drastically change the metagame. Building a new version from the ground up is better in the way of providing a more solid, streamlined and enjoyable experience. You can't compare the adjustments for an RTS to a shooter.
Again, the "crime" is the amount they charge for it which you can't fault them for as the numbers show.

"Oops" is in. Even politicians and university athletic programs are doing it.
