But... why? Why do people keep buying the same game with slightly different setting and slight changes in multiplayer that in the old days would've been enough for a patch or expansion pack?

I just... don't get it..
What are you talking about? Long ago we used to released map packs as sequels. Doom 2 was Doom with one reskined enemies, a few new ones, no new weapons, no new gameplay elements and a lot of new maps.

Heretic:Shadow of the Serpant Raiders(alright that was an expansion) was a map pack, it didn't even had the decency to put in some new enemies.

Megaman - the whole series is just one shooty platformer after another shooty platformer.

The current Street Fighters DLC contains as much new stuff as all the Street Fighter II --Insert whatever here --.

I'm not saying things are ideal now, but back in the day the Heroes 3 exp. didn't gave that much stuff.
You didn't pay $60 for expansion packs.

Also, different times. Doom didn't even have a story, that's like saying Serious Sam 2 is not worth buying because it has no story. Or at least one you are interested in.

I would guess that it's probably from Hardened Edition sales. That thing sold out of all 4 Gamestop locations in my area within 2 days. And it's a good deal for the people that know they're gonna buy the DLC anyway.
Good point. I wasn't thinking about the special editions and whatnot at all earlier. They must have sold a lot to make up such a difference in sales and revenue.

Cool story bro?

I mean, this is pretty great for them, but I'm more apathetic about Modern Warfare. I prefer Postmodern Warfare. :p

7 million copies to make its publisher very happy with $310 million in revenue. Black Ops followed suit the next year by generating $360 million the first 24 hours it was available. This week, MW3 sold an estimated 6.5 million copies for an ungodly amount of $400 million.
so i'm not the only one to catch the inconsistent math here right?

i'd like to note that comparing games to movies, since a AAA game is 60 US dollars, and a movie is closer to 12-15, to generate comparable revenue, four or five times as many people would have to see the movie. games may generate a lot of revenue, but that doesn't mean that more people are playing them than are watching movies.

Left 4 Dead 2 was a mistake.
No it wasn't.

Anyhow, its not the graphics or pricing that I get pissy at people about. Its their reaction. "Oh Call of duty is ALL THE SAME, not one thing has changed between each game its just different maps and weapons"

Thats the point I get angry at.
Haters tend to not notice the differences which change the game, the introduction of loadouts makes things "your" call of duty. Not in the mood for killing for your killstreaks? Pick the support package. Not in the mood for either? Pick the specialist. The introduction of specialties also makes things interesting, if you LOVE a gun, you get more attachments/perks specifically for that rifle.

The differences between games are much more noticed if you play them for more than 1 hour (Which half the haters never do):

In call of duty 4, things were alot more quick and stiff:

In Modern warfare 2, things exploded more, yet flowed like a cutting board

In Black ops, things flowed smoothly, but it also flowed more slowly

In Modern warfare 3, things flow quickly like Call of duty 4, yet smoothly enough to be able to play with skill from the same game.

Its not haters that make me angry, its their reasoning and treating others like fucking morons for simply getting what they enjoy that does.

Impressive and I certainly plan to add to its total sales record sometime in the year 3000 when I've finally completed Skyrim.

You just described the average League of Legends patch. That game is F2P.

Or most game's patches, or at the very most DLC or an xpack.
For another comparison, WoW does this quite often, and WoW costs 15 bucks a month. And to actually feel the effects of the patch in any meaningful manner you have to be at max level, which takes a month or two at the very least for the average gamer.

Christ, the people who complaing about it being "the same game" are seriously missing the point. New features, balances and improvements... the thing about new versions of this is that it creates an ENTIRELY different metagame. Each of these games may have the same basic functions, but on a level beyond "point and click" they're very different. That is why you have people still playing COD4. Not because the campaign was so much better, but because they preferred that metagame. It's the same deal with fighting games.
The evil here however is that they still charge goddamn full price for each one, but you can't fault them for that considering how well it sells. They know it's gonna be a massive success. You want to ask them to make LESS money because it's the nicer thing to do? Video games are an industry, not a bloody religion.
No, we want them to put a bit of innovation into the same game, even if it's just something simple like a squad command system, or hell the ability to set traps, wouldn't be that hard to implement and would make a lot of sense, they're supposed to be fighting an urban war, so make it seem like it.
The ability to set up traps. Check! There's the claymore, bouncing betty, I.M.S, Airdrop trap, the advanced UAV letting you lye in wait for an enemy and the two types of sentry guns. Saying you can not in any way set a trap in MW3 is rather stupid.

Also, a squad command system wouldn't fit into CoD since the maps are so small and the rounds go past very quickly. You dont get the sort of teamwork you find in Battlefield that really requires a squad commander. Also, there's a lot of ways to light people up on the mini map telling your team mates where to go to kill people. A squad system in CoD would suck immensely since in my opinion the squad system in bf3 is only used so you dont have to run so far from your team's default spawn, that never happens in CoD because the maps are so small.
Those are military traps, I'm talking urban warfare traps, tripwires tied to grenades, Industrial sectors with smelting pots to unleash fiery death upon the enemy.

Although I do love me some decoy package.
Those type's of traps dont really fit in CoD games since they take long to set up meaning that you dont get the advantage of the claymorem's pick up put down ease of use and they would probably be considered OP since they cover more than the single spot of a claymore or bouncing betty. I couldn't care less what the trap was like or not, all it has to do is kill the person stupid enough to run over it.

I agree, I do love me some trap packages, got a triple kill today with one of them. Although I haven't really gotten the hang of not capturing enemy crates that are just lying there, it's just so tempting!

I just... don't get it..
Because it's not the same game. People who say that are either ignorant or just have a hard time paying attention to details. It uses the same graphics engine. It looks the same. It is not the same. It doesn't feel the same. It's why people prefer MW2 over Black Ops or the other way around. Every game is hugely different gameplay-wise. Sure, the core shoot-people-in-the-face mechanic is there in every entry, but the way it works is changed.

It's why reviewers give CoD games good ratings. They need to explore every corner of the game so they can review it. If you only look at the cover, it shall look like the same game as the previous one. You need to go deeper than that to really appreciate it.

OT: This is terrific news for the industry, honestly. We're outselling movies and music more and more.
