As April Fool's Day is tomorrow here in America, it would be today in those countries that are occupying that space in other time zones.

I'm in awe at the amount of people who don't realize that this is just a playful jab at Valve. Notch even said on Twitter that he loved Valve.

As a Valve fanboy, I will take defeat with grace and admit that this was probably the best April Fools Day joke Minecraft could have played, given the circumstances.

Yes, it it's funny - but I'm more surprised that there seem to be several people who don't understand that it's a joke at all.

Anyway, it's true that this should definitely bee seen as a playful jab. Notch has mentioned several times that he loves Valve and their games. If I remember correctly he doesn't like the store in TF2 though, so it's not surprising that it is what he chose to poke fun at.

I wonder how valve will respond.
With Episode 3....LOL who am I kidding. Hopefully it will actually be with the Solider's Offical MANN CO. Diamond pickaxe or the Demoman Creeper Launcher or even better a Spy Block Sapper!

Innovations like this are precisely why I like to support indie developers over bloated corporate machines like Valve [http://www.valvesoftware.com/], who just don't have what it takes to come up with this kind of original idea. Good job, Notch!
Innovation? NO IT IS NOT, it is a nod TOWARDS valve's Mann.co Supply Store for Team Fortress 2! By god, it is the opposite of innovation, please don't give extra credit where it isn't due. Valve came up with it first, and for a sort of tributary to it, Notch created an exact replica of the store for his game as well.
I, too, only just realized that there is an international dateline. What does this mean? It means that the date is April 1st in Sweden.
There is indeed an International Date Line, but it's absolutely nowhere near Sweden. It runs down the little bit of ocean between Russia and Alaska, then down through the Pacific islands. Sweden is only 5 hours ahead of the east coast of America.

Also, isn't it the 31st? April Fool's is tomorrow. Unless my calendar is playing a joke on me.

At the time of this posting(3:11 PM Eastern US), it would be about 9:11 PM Notch's time(Sweden, GMT +6). Give a take about an hour.
...what? No. It's GMT +1, but either way it still wasn't even close to April 1st in Sweden (nor in the UK, where I am) when the store page was put up - this article was posted at 8.01pm in our time zone.

Incidentally: I suspect it's already been mentioned, but the locked crates (that the keys on the store page are purportedly for) are actually in the game. I found one a little while ago. I assume they're a joke and will disappear in a new update over the next couple of days, but it's good to see they're doing this sort of thing.

EDIT - Just realised: America writes the date as 1/4, the update that added these things to the game was Beta 1.4. Coincidence? I hope not, that's the cleverest part of the whole thing if deliberate.

Only a "good" game? Mojang is a fantastic, industry revolutionising work of art that has finally achieved recognition with it's achievements in the widely-renown March Mayhem competition. Valve's own attempt a shop pale in comparison, a feeble candle to the solar brilliance that surrounds Notch's blessed crown.

What makes the disparity between these two companies is that, in possibly the first occasion in history, your 'am I the only one' question was in fact true - you are the only person playing TF2; everyone else left after the AI was implemented. I guess that's testament to at least Valves' ingenuity in the AI department, but even that shrivels to the elegance of Notch's creations; the directness of the zombies' advances and the sneakiness of the thrice-damned Creeper create a perfect synthesis of tactics to create the most fearsome experience achievable in game.
For fucks sake man, you sound like a Jehovah witness on crack. I'm pretty sure you're just trying to be funny and this comment did really make me laugh about how over-blown your making everything. I like Minecraft, but I guess I don't have the time for it between college, hanging with my friends, and a very large WoW addiction.

As for the store, I didn't really pay for anything with the TF2 Mann Co. Store and I probably won't pay for anything there if I ever do get back around to Minecraft during the summer break.
I'm glad I could cause a chuckle. Was just trying to procrastinate doing the oodles of work I've got in tomorrow - might explain the crack ;)

The concept of a "Company Store" selling low-priced virtual novelty items for use in a videogame is certainly a fresh one and I think Notch and the rest of the team at Valve [http://www.mojang.com/], who just don't have what it takes to come up with this kind of original idea. Good job, Notch!
See, this is why I hate sarcasm in text. This could either be someone being very sarcastic, someone who's trolling, or someone who really doesn't know that plenty of other games have done this before (including Team Fortress 2 selling hats). There's no tone of voice, no facial expressions, just cold text.

I mean, okay, in this context I guess it's safe to say we're dealing with sarcasm here considering that someone who writes about games every day should know that it's not an original idea, but regardless, perfect example. Obvious sarcasm works, no sarcasm works, but this kind of thing where it could go either way drives me nuts. :(

I'm afraid to comment on this, because I'm not entirely sure of whether or not it's a joke.

Here, try this:

In seriousness, it's usually pretty easy to tell when a writer is being ironic unless they're particularly inept or idiosyncratic. I don't see the problem?

[sub]Of course, I could be using irony right now... you'll never know![/sub]

I love how some of the Facebook responses on the article are getting all high and mighty over the fact that this is "biased reporting" and that Mojang should have had no chance versus Nintendo or Valve. It's really great how they don't realize two of the things that almost all of the world knows; 1) Learn to take a joke or you will have a poor life indeed. 2) Age comes before beauty.

For clarification...
1) Self-explanatory, it's a joke capitalizing on the success of Minecraft, TF2, and April Fools all at once.
2) The older things are, the less people want anything to do with them. Minecraft is the fascinating new (relatively new, at least compared to Nintendo, and Valve on a bad day) thing that everyone wants more of. Which also explains why its not-exactly-pleasing-to-the-eye graphics are still destroying the March Madness bracket. The age has withered even though Valve and Ninty still make beautiful new games; they just aren't "new" anymore, it's all the same thing. Most people just like the new thing until people start copying it.

... Hmm, funny how the more tired I am when posting, the more prolific and pointless my posts become. I just managed a good sized paragraph-worth of information on Facebook posters and opinions of the general populace. Damn, I need some sleep.

And while we are on the topic of Valve, where's our Episode 3?
