A nice little idea that serves as a midpoint between the non-functional aesthetic purchase feature and the balance-shattering gameplay purchase feature. From the sound of the names, they probably don't serve any direct purpose in-game, but they do serve to just be fun little trinkets (Riding around on a creeper? Sounds neat.)

Of course, there's also the chance this is just a joke, especially given how ludicrous some of the prices are and how silly some of the items seem. 99 dollars for a name change is the biggest indicator, considering 15 dollars could just buy you a new copy of the game under a different name.

Edit: After looking around a bit more, I'm fairly certain this is just a joke. Notice the 5-pack of keys costs as much as 6 keys would. The "response from support" is a crack at the number of people who complain because when they submit a bug report, Mojang rarely ever sends a response (they usually get to work on it instead of wasting time writing a response to the several million reports they receive every week)
If you're fairly sure it's a joke, click the buy button. Or put $10000 worth of items in your cart.
Hey, yeah, I already did that. Good ol' Notch.

Creeper Saddles... How do we ride them without them blowning us and them up?
Well that's the tricky bit isn't it?
Does any other entertainment industry suffer from such widespread pranks on april fools. First Riot with Lee Sin and Urf now this....

This is defiantly a shot at Valves in-game Mann store...way to kick them while they are down Mojang. Funny nonetheless though.

EDIT: Is it April 1st in Sweden?

The concept of a "Company Store" selling low-priced virtual novelty items for use in a videogame is certainly a fresh one and I think Notch and the rest of the team at Valve [http://www.mojang.com/], who just don't have what it takes to come up with this kind of original idea. Good job, Notch!

I'm sorry, but... maybe I just don't see how this is any different from any other store that sells in-game items from a company? Really, I don't get it...

I'm not trying to be sarcastic, I just don't see how this is new or innovative when you have plenty of games that sell in-game items. Is it the fact that they're temporary? Other games do that too.

Please, fill me in on what I'm missing here. It's not April 1st yet. I don't see the joke.

EDIT: Argh. The international dateline. Of course.

Yes, Minecraft (not mojang) is a good game. However, since this is Mojang's only game it is yet to be shown if the company is good or if this is just a fluke. I've got nothing against them, but I do want to take an analytical standpoint on the March Madness debate.

Saying valve is too much of an over-bloated company to think of this kind of virtual store is what has me confused about if you're being sarcastic or not. I'm sure I'm not the only one who plays TF2 and everyone else who does would know as well as I thatValve has made a Mann Co. Store. This store is exactly what you describe the minecraft store to be and has been out for... well I won't pretend that I remember how long, but it has been a very long time.

So op if you are indeed kidding then I apologize for wasting bandwidth and posting such a long comment :p.

However if you are not kidding, please note that you have just made yourself look very stupid and need to get your facts straight next time you post something to the community.
Only a "good" game? Mojang is a fantastic, industry revolutionising work of art that has finally achieved recognition with it's achievements in the widely-renown March Mayhem competition. Valve's own attempt a shop pale in comparison, a feeble candle to the solar brilliance that surrounds Notch's blessed crown.

What makes the disparity between these two companies is that, in possibly the first occasion in history, your 'am I the only one' question was in fact true - you are the only person playing TF2; everyone else left after the AI was implemented. I guess that's testament to at least Valves' ingenuity in the AI department, but even that shrivels to the elegance of Notch's creations; the directness of the zombies' advances and the sneakiness of the thrice-damned Creeper create a perfect synthesis of tactics to create the most fearsome experience achievable in game.

It saddens me that people are so mad that Valve lost to Mojang that they're willin to spew bile and hate everywhere and not realize a friggin April Fools prank starin right at them. Seriously...its kinda sad.

On a sidenote, might be a tad early but I giggled nonetheless.

Innovations like this are precisely why I like to support indie developers over bloated corporate machines like Valve [http://www.valvesoftware.com/], who just don't have what it takes to come up with this kind of original idea. Good job, Notch!
Innovation? NO IT IS NOT, it is a nod TOWARDS valve's Mann.co Supply Store for Team Fortress 2! By god, it is the opposite of innovation, please don't give extra credit where it isn't due. Valve came up with it first, and for a sort of tributary to it, Notch created an exact replica of the store for his game as well.
I, too, only just realized that there is an international dateline. What does this mean? It means that the date is April 1st in Sweden.

Mojang Crushes Valve, Opens "The Minecraft Store"

Minecraft [http://www.minecraft.net/] creator Markus "Notch" Persson, who recently defeated the mighty Valve to earn a place in the March Mayhem finals, has opened a brand new "Minecraft Store" with a big range of in-game items for sale.

When Mojang, the studio formed by Persson to handle all things Minecraft, was put up against the behemoth Nintendo in the opening round of Portal [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tournaments/standings/5]. Surely, little Mojang's luck had finally run out.

Wrong.

Mojang is in the finals and Notch appears to be rather pleased about being there. So much so, in fact, that he's saying a special "thank you" to supporters with the new Minecraft Store, which is currently offering several new in-game items at special introductory prices. Steve Co. Supply Crate Keys are currently available for just $3 or in packs of 5 for $18, miner's helmets are $21 and Creeper saddles can be had for $42. Other items up for grabs include padlocks, enlargement pills and a response from the support department.

The Minecraft Store hasn't been officially unveiled to the public but fans can get an early preview of what's on offer at minecraft.net/store/loot.asp [http://www.minecraft.net/store/loot.jsp]. [Customers are asked to please avoid making single purchases of more than $10,000.]

Your joking, right
TF2 has had this for at least a year, that's why the key in the picture exists, because Valve had done it first.
If your not kidding I ask you to do some research next time, try to have some descency with the news

OK I forgot about April Fools Day

I have an issue with the whole 'Company Store' thing.

Wait, I'm not hating for the sake of hating, hear me out, ok? My issue is simpe: What does this mean to the stuff made with the modding API? So far there's nothing out there that prevents people from already making the stuff they're selling, even right now using the code API. Once the official one is out, and people start messing with stuff, paying for creeper saddles, helmets, padlocks, enlargment pills, or anything that affects the code in any way will seem like nonsense, so what gives? Will they give us a thorough and robust API and evolve their business, or will they give us a subpar API so as to keep milking the cash cow? Will there ever come a point where they will take down specific creations by the community if they feel it goes against something they want to sell through the store?

Think about it, what if there was some kind of store for GMod instead of a large repository for stuff made by the community?

It's interesting, but certainly not original. Guild Wars has an in-game store that is quite similar.
I'm not discrediting the concept, just the article saying that this is a fresh innovation.

... Okay... what's stopping us modding in all of this?

Unless Notch is looking to completely end my goodwill by closing his game like Creative Assembly did...

GOod joke.

For fucks sake man, you sound like a Jehovah witness on crack. I'm pretty sure you're just trying to be funny and this comment did really make me laugh about how over-blown your making everything. I like Minecraft, but I guess I don't have the time for it between college, hanging with my friends, and a very large WoW addiction.

As for the store, I didn't really pay for anything with the TF2 Mann Co. Store and I probably won't pay for anything there if I ever do get back around to Minecraft during the summer break.
