Bad review. Plenty, and I mean plenty, of stuff to complain about in this game, but this review was pretty much terrible and reeks of someone who spent next to no time with the game but made witty arguments over the stuff they encountered in the first hour of gameplay then stopped playing.

You want bad points?

- Players can be knocked into the air or pushed by other players who don't watch their attacks causing you to go soaring over a monster for the bulk of a battle
- Status attacks aren't useless, but the number of times you have to strike a monster with a status weapon or the number of rounds of status ammo you have to pump in them almost makes them useless
-The camera can totally screw you over at times. Not the lack of a lock-on system, but the fact that you will just have a screen filled up with a wall or see inside of a monster in the middle of fight
-The text field is too limited when trying to put out a message and it breaks the flow quite a bit.
- When you are fighting more than one boss on the same screen, they do no damage to each other with their charges and attacks AND the game usually lags quite a bit
-The animations for performing any action take a good bit of timing to pull off, but that retarded flexing animation after drinking a potion in the middle of a battle will get you killed at least a dozen times when playing
-Extremely low drop rates for items necessary to complete some basic equipment and armor is totally uncalled for but happens with far too much frequency in later portions of the game
-The '3 deaths equal failure' rule applies to any three deaths and frequently the same retard WILL keep on failing because they refuse to accept their lack of skill.

All that said, I still like Monster Hunter Tri because taking down a big monster with some friends online is highly rewarding and the combat (even with the wonky camera) is highly addictive. It doesn't feel like a grind, even though that is all it really is, for the most part. The most important reason I like it is due to the fact that skill with weapons count far more than the weapons themselves. I can completely understand why some people would hate the game though.

Later folks.

I can tell you what annoys me.

The monster scaling for multiplayer is set for 4 people (or so I've been told).
Would it be so hard to have the monster scale for the number of people in the missions?
I enjoy playing with 1-2 friends at the time and I really don't want to take random people with me, while I'm playing with them.

Wii speak doesn't work properly.
It is hard to understand the others and you have to repeat yourself often.
It works great in other games, wo why not here?
Capcom said they are working on it, but there hasn't been an update since then.

That's all I can think of at the moment.
You can set monster scaling, actually, by setting Missions for 1, 2, 3, or 4 people online. If you're going up against monsters scaled for 4 people, then you're not actually setting it for less.
Nope, it's like I said before
.
Same armor, same weapon.

Barroth offline:
2 Barrel Bombs L+ (with bombardier), 50 water shots(rapid fired)
Status: dead

Barroth online, set for one player:
2 Barrel Bombs L+ (with bombardier), 60 water shots(rapid fired), 60 pellets shots lvl2, 60 pellet shots lvl1, 99 normal shots lvl2, 99 normal shots level 3
Status: captureable

Ok, I have to say that this thread blows my mind. It's a brawl between the (switches to high-pitched-voice) "Mneh, Mneh, Mneh, Yahtzee didn't like my game because he's bad at it and can't beat the tutorial," and the "Mneh Mneh, Mneh, People who play monster hunter tri are insecure for liking a game that Yahtzee dissed twice in a row!"

Seriously people, the thread is so incredibly repetitive, and it's about the opinion of a person most, if not all of you, will never meet in real life.

When Yahtzee points out something wrong with a game, he does so in a way that is extreme, and entirely based on his experience of 20(?) years or so of playing video games. He (thankfully) does not have the last say on whether a video game is good. That, dear readers, comes down to you.

So, in the spirit of not having anybody cut their ties with the Escapist community for a little nit-picky opinion war, everybody chill.
Thank you! I couldn't have said it better, although I did try (and was misinterpreted).

I am surprised that no one really gets the basic message Yahtzee was enunciating here: That if a game can't manage to appeal to you in X hours then it's not going to appeal to you inb 2X or even 3X hours.
I dunno. In the reviews of anything that would actually reward some patience and long-term play Yahtzee comes across as an ex-gamer with much more manly things to do than indulge in a childish hobby. To be fair, I would totally agree if I owned a bar too.

I don't though, so I'm free to treat investing effort to develop skill in a game as a an ends in itself as opposed to an obstacle in the way of playing enough of a game to provide me with a few minutes of good comedic material. Titles with a long learning curve are much more rewarding for making me actually engage myself in playing them instead of just tapping buttons and watching things explode or villains spewing dialog.
Good point. I probably take his comments more seriously on games like this because I do have limited game time; I work 40 hours a week at my main job and put another 20-30 hours in on my writing career. So what free time I have for games...which are my principal hobby!...requires careful weight and consideration.

Also, I played (well, tried to) the last couple MH games and found them to be rather tedious. My wife loves them to death however, and has amassed a huge number of hours and burned out a PSP on them.

Granted, weapons degradation systems absolutely work, if applied well. Look at the Fallout games, weapons need repairing, but usually not halfway through a major boss battle (unless you're really inattentive).

Monsters can and do hurt eachother, FlameSpeak. You can't tell because you can't see their health. Just wait til Rathalos kills Rathian, then you see. (happens a lot in pre-titles)

Another example is if the qurupeco summons a monster, and it decides it doesn't like the qurupeco very much and beats the stuffing out of the stupid bird. Or gets the stuffing beat out of it (Great jaggi anyone?).

Like all reviews I thought they were pretty bang on in listing some of the game's flaws. This was my first leap into the Monster Hunter foray and while I didn't quite spend 10 hours doing the tutorial quests, it does take some getting used to. Gathering, sharpening, getting committed to heavy weapons all take some time to get used to, especially with the game's early crappy weapons.

Yahtzee's job here isn't to tell you why a game is perfect and why you should buy it, every other magazine including the massively corrupt Famitsu does that (giving this game a 40 lol). However, if you find merit in the game, and enough depth, and you switched to Great Sword instead of using SnS early on you'd find that MH3 is a great game. Level 55 now and still going!

He really didn't raise any of the real issues with the game, Justin. Many of which would've made hilarious jokes. Also, SnS is playable. If done right.

For the people commenting on a "10-hour tutorial". No, the tutorial isn't ten hours long. The "tutorial" is half an hour, tops. This is because there's so many core concepts to cover and nobody seems to read the instruction manual.

This has never been about Yahtzee not liking a game. It's about him playing almost none of the game at all, making the game seem like it is exclusively about gathering supplies and not hunting monsters as the game title would flat-out tell you. He actually flat-out says that it's NOT about hunting monsters.

Again, calling for the escapist to review their contract with this clown. They paid him to do a job, he didn't do it.

I bought Monster Hunter Tri and I have to say I had a similar experience to Yahtzee's. I had just spent the better part of an hour alternating between plinking away at the monster and dying when I finally killed the darn thing. It was the happiest i had been since I started the game.

Than I saw the next mission. this time I had to capture the same dang monster which took me so long to just kill. I wasn't thrilled, but I figured I should try to beat it at least. So I started the mission. I died the first few times, but I knew when he was close to death and I started to learn his routes of escape. So I finally got the patterns down and took the 5 minutes it takes to set the trap, and I finally caught the monster in it, and I figured I had it finally beat. Since the mission didn't end I immediately started whacking it with my sword. The dam thing stayed down for about 10 seconds and then popped up and continued on its merry way.

At that point I placed my controller down and turned off my Wii. I could stand the weapon degradation and the constant need to sharpen, I could stand the need to run off and eat something every time a monster lightly tapped you, and I could even stand the fact that it took a half hour to take down the dang monster, and I could stand the lack of monster health bars. The last straw was the fact that the capture system was mindless guesswork that would cost you a half hour every time you dinged the dam thing 1 time too many or had dinged it 1 time too few. This was the point where the game felt less challenging and more like the game designers being cruel.

Actually, the above mentioned post does make a good point. I do not recall capturing a monster being properly explained.

Capturing a monster requires three steps:
1: Weaken It!
A good sign that a monster is weak enough to capture is when it starts limping. If you plan on being super awesome at capturing, there is a skill that will cause the monster's DOT on the map to start blinking when they are capturable.

2: Trap It!
This is pretty straight forward.

3: Tranq It!
This is the key part I do not recall ever being mentioned in the game. When the monster is trapped, throw Trang Bombs at its face. An average of two will do it.

THERE YOU GO! One Captured Monster.

Play the game and you'll see MH's tutorial is like how you say they should be. Not to mention, there's an in game and booklet control manual; the 'tutorial' isn't necessary to play. Read the controls and play you game master.

Again, you idiots are coming into a Red(Yahtzee's sh!tty 'review') vs Blue(the Defense of soma in the manifestation of a videogame) debate and arguing green(Stop saying Yahtzee didn't do his jooo-buh!)

Take note: the critic and users scores have been higher than the domain score EVERY TIME. For the slower readers, that means these are the lowest scores on the review. Most of these are out of ten.

Just for the hell of it, Monster Hunter 3 is more of a low fantasy environment. There's no real magic, etc. Most of the monsters are physically viable.

Why the hell is everyone saying this game's bad because of a 10 hour tutorial. First off some fanboy idiot told yahtzee the tutorial was 10 hours second is that the tutorials like 30minutes-1hour! That's barely anything by most rpg standards.

I'm even more pissed on the fence players aren't buying because they ACTUALLY thought it was 10 hours of tutorial.

I don't like games that involve elves, knights, castles, dragons, orcs, or anything like that.
Just for the hell of it, Monster Hunter 3 is more of a low fantasy environment. There's no real magic, etc. Most of the monsters are physically viable.
I guess you could say it's a bit more like Beowulf than Lord of the Rings. I myself just can't really get into those themes. If you can, however, I guess you already have the game and may or may not be willing to write 7 paragraphs defending the game while unsuccessfully trying to sound like their oppinion matters. I appreciate anyone who likes the game and hasn't wasted 20 minutes on a fourm trying to argue.

Lmao

Yahtzee, if it takes you 10 hours to do the tutorial, then you suck at video games. I was fighting that first boss you fought within an hour.

And you do know the wiimote controls are optional, right? You can use an actual controller.

For me, Dfskelleton it isn't about whether or not Yahtzee liked the game. It's about the lack of actual time reviewing the game. Simply put, the guy hasn't actually done his job. Yet he got paid for it.

Oh man. A few days ago I mentioned Yahtzee's review to a friend of mine who owns a Wii.

My god that was a mistake.

He started shouting like a berserk madman. I could see his eyes red with fanatical wrath. I was afraid for my life.
I guess I know how Yahtzee feels like.

Goodness me I had fun reading this humongous pile of fan rage.

Even though I did enjoy MH3 Yahtzee, I totally agree with the points you make. Why cant people just chill out and not get all sweaty and annoyed whenever somebody criticizes something they love, when it most certainly has flaws.

It's his opinion, off to your Capcom forums fanboys now.

His opinion is flawed, he never actually played the game. Released a review where he never talked about the bread & butter of the MH3 series. It's not even about fanboyism, it's about him never addressing real flaws and actually pulling some out of his imagination.
