So what did he do wrong?
It is also worth noting that while he didn't create the mods them selfs he did compile the combined resultant image and include the detailed steps to install them all together. He provided credit of the original content creators, and he didn't attempt to profit off their work. So why are they angry?

You can actually still download it. Not all of the file network sites have removed it.

I've seen this kind of prima donna bitching before by various modding communities, and it's always stupid in my opinion. If they had a problem with not getting credit for their work, they could have contacted Smith and asked to be included in the credits. To shut it down completely reeks of selfish egotism. Besides, mod authors don't even use their real names most of the time, just their online pseudonyms.

Now I'm no expert by any stretch of the imagination, but the whole "violating copyright laws in about a dozen countries" claim reeks of bullcrap. Nobody was making any money off of this. Moreover, it's unlikely any of the mods would be protected like Morrowind itself, since they were all based on the original game's IP.

In short, the modders need to drop the drama queen routine and work something out.

Oh now that's just so ironic it hurts. Getting mad that somebody else used your stuff without your express written consent, when your stuff happens to be that exact thing? A mod of a game that you had no participation in making? Geezus. At this point it looked like all the mods were closed-minded about the whole thing, so I'd say the project has gone tits up. Which isn't really that much of a big deal for me, I mean, Morrowind's story, characters, and landscape may have been amazing, but the core combat and gameplay just never really flowed for me. But that's just my uneducated opinion, I suppose.

Ninja... If anyone really wants it, just check a torrent. It is out there now, there is no killing it.

Well, then, .

If I lose these mods from this download, I'm not downloading them from YOU. I'd sooner go without then let you people raise hell about it. <tips hat, leaves>

You realize they own nothing? They're taking another companies work and changing it. Threatening legal action over something they don't even own. Hence why you can't charge money.

I hope he posts the usernames or emails of these assholes so they get spammed into oblivion and people know whos mods to stop supporting. I don't care who is right or wrong here, those people are fucking douchebags, plain and simple.
Yeah, those people are douchbags for not wanting someone to compile their mod [that they spent a lot of time and effort on, and then released to the community] in a package without their permission...

I think you need a reality check - the mod creators aren't in the wrong here, what the guy did was illegal, and what's more he clearly [well according to this news post anyway] didn't ask permission from the modders in the first place - and he's gaining positive publicity from their work...there's nothing wrong with them threatening action against him.
Reality check? I already said I don't care who's right or wrong. And guess what? Modding with no permission from dev and releasing it for others to use is illegal but that doesn't stop people.
While I do agree with you, uh... they released the Modkit for the game, for people to mod it. Modding games like Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout 3, New Vegas is perfectly legal...
Sorry I should have said in general, not specifics.

What would they sue him for? All the money he DIDN'T make from freely distributing free software? He's not depriving them of any 'sales'. There's nothing financial at issue here. It's weird to call his actions "illegal" since people make mod compilations all the time. I think they just got butt-hurt about the perceived publicity he was getting.

Besides, who the hell still plays Morrowind? (Goes back to playing Fallout New Vegas.)

Fuck, I didn't get to download it yet. This sucks. Granted, he really should have asked for permission first, so I fully understand why this happened. But the mods are made for the community anyway and are available for free, so I don't understand why the response is so severe at all.
Quick, get downloading, it's still up (as is the nature of torrents).

Ok, this is probably the exact reason the modders were not happy in the first place. First and foremost it's not a mod, it's a package containing other peoples mods. The incorrect notion that he created these mods [and to be honest that's the impression some gaming sites gave] would no doubt have angered those that took the time and effort to create said mods.
I never said he created them. But if they really wanted him to not include their mod (which is silly for many reasons), they should have asked him quietly remove it instead of this huge to-do. Now it's impossible to kill.

For once, I'm with the lawsuits here. He used the mods without the original owners permission. I can almost guarantee that if he contacted the creators first, this would never have happened.

This just seems silly, the dude isn't making money off it or anything. Why try to kill off something that would bring new life to an old game they enjoy and still mod for. All he did was compile and give directions for many mods to run smoothly together. Whats there to be mad at?

I'd give it a few minutes before it's re-uploaded by someone else who has it.

Seriously, what do the individual modders have to gain from restricting use of their mods? It's not like they're making money...

Also, once they put it out there, isn't it public domain? Or am I mistaken?
Bah, you have to little faith in the Morrowind community.

I'd give it a few seconds.

Why into Oblivion and not into... Daggerfall!...

OT: This sucks... I wanted to download the thing, hell, I even finished reinstalling Morrowind just for this.
