Mmm....Guardian's Realm and The Dark People City in Dreamfall. Really beautiful vistas.

Space in Homeworld 2. Niiiiiiiice. I know real space is mostly black, but I don't care.

Ditto on the cleared up Windmill section in Prince of Persia 2008 (plus the whole post-battle escape is one the most awesome setpieces I've played).

Thailand in Tomb Raider Underworld. The first part of the last level (trying to avoid spoilers here) is also awe inspiring. Those absolutely massive statues, the entrance, the ambience. Cool place ;-).

Panau Island in Just Cause 2 is gorgeous in some places. You have never truly experienced a sunset until you've experienced one while on top of a jet. I also love Manaan in Knights of the Old Republic. Something about it just seemed so amazing to me. New Mombassa City in Halo: ODST was incredible to me as well. just had a great atmosphere to it. Also loved Illium in Mass Effect 2. Now that is a planet I would want to visit.

Some of the spots in Alice: Madness Returns were really nice. The state wonderland was in gave it the melancholy sort of atmosphere that fits it well.

Whilst I agree with a vast amount of the replies in this thread, I want to add Feudal Japan, as seen in Shogun 2 - Total War.

Sometimes I've lost more troops then I usually would because I was distracted by the sheer beauty of the land I'm fighting to control.

Other than that, RDR, Oblivion, Faerun and Homeworld are all very beautiful.

Duke Nukem's Titty City

Just kidding

I really remember when you get out of the sewer the first time in Oblivion. I just looked around and went, "Wow."

In Bioshock (The first one) when you get to Ryan's office at last. The image of the fabled evil man playing golf in a collapsing room full of images of himself really strikes me as amazing. Or the part of Bioshock where you see pieces of Rapture falling around you accompanied by "Now you've seen Rapture, the world's fastest growing pile of junk."

On pure aesthetics, it's probably in some newer released game.

But on the entire atmosphere of it all?

Kingdom of Zeal from Chrono Trigger, anyone?

Ruined New York in Enslaved and New Alexandria from Halo:Reach. Tuchanka and the Overload DLC tank sections in ME:2 deserve mentions as well.

I have been playing a lot of beautiful games with nice scenery lately, from Minecraft watching the sun rise as i stand upon a floating chunk of rock. Frogatto with its nice orchestrated soundtrack and ocean view. Spiral knights with its stylized architecture and neon lights. Beat Hazard with all its flashing lights and smoke neon backgroud.

The winner out of these though is still Minecraft for also allowing me to stare into a giant pool of lava in a dark cave with red dust ore glowing around me. The lonely nights staring into the knight sky in a small boat counting the individual stars waiting for morning. Beautiful experience...

Edit: Also a shout out to Dark Cloud 2, most notably Veniccio ocean both present and future.

The tallest point in Oblivion, a cliff top that pretty much overlooks everything, right nightmare to get there. The view is stunning though
Also known as 'Adoring Fan Murder Mountain Spot'

Shadow of the Colossus is quite pretty, especially considering the hardware they were working with.
