The only Zelda game I can think of that fits the description of "happy" made before the 3D Zelda games would possibly be Link's Awakening. A Link to the Past, for example, is very dark.
Just because it's happy doesn't mean it wasn't the best Zelda game ever.

Army of Two. I heard about that games years before it came out. The month before it came out I was looking at trailers and reading everything, until I started to use my comprehensive knowledge to start to realize it would suck. And it was made by EA. I just borrowed it from a friend. It wasn't technically disappointingly because when I finally played it I didn't have high hopes.

Painkiller - Got it (a few months before the ZP review) after reading through the entire archives of a few gaming comics and seeing just how many referred to it. When I'd heard about the weapons, and even the general premise, I thought HELL YES! Went and found it for $10(AUD). There might be a gun that shoots shurikens and lightning, but the completely boring and repetitive gameplay, poor AI, lack of a challenge and shite environments just disappointed me.

Dungeon Keeper II - so many people rave about this series being a complete change in the RTS genre that I had to give it a try. Huge let down. It's inventive and fun, a lot of interesting humour from the Narrator, but again poor gameplay, no challenge, repetition. You're not a Dungeon Keeper, but the director of a preschool play. You can tell the kids, or evil things, where to go, and even take control of one directly, bringing a few along in the process. But trying to arrange specific tasks, or micromanage effectively to override stupid AI is just impossible.

Grand Theft Auto 1 & 2 - Free download off the Rockstar site, figured I'd give the games that started my favourite series a go. Could not possibly be more disappointed. Poor handling and control, pathetic gameplay, boring missions.

I know there's more, I've been on a classic game binge lately and have come across so many disappointments that I'd considered making this thread myself. I'll remember them later I'm sure. Most of the disappointing games seem to be older ones, classics which people enjoy and still remember either because A) it's what they grew up with so they're biased or B) they haven't actually played them in a while, and so all they're remembering are the good bits.

I'm going to show my age with this one. Pool of Radiance, the remake. I played the original on 5.25" disks and was looking forward to a remake of that childhood game. Wow, it sucked so much. Endless dungeons, full of bugs, and if you tried to uninstall it, it would delete important windows system files.

Oh yeah. Deus Ex: Invisible War.

The original ranked among the best games I've played, combining FPS, good stealth areas, and RPG elements fairly smoothly, and with a good story and likable characters (Sam Carter... Need I say more?). The sequel... The guns were boring, ammo being interchangeable was nice at first, but gimmicky and was a huge problem if you liked the Rail Gun too much, the stealth element was fun, but was a little too strictly required towards the end, since enemies could nearly one-shot you, the RPG elements were stripped away almost entirely, the characters were hard to empathize with and were annoying most of the time, and the story (and endings) sucked. I guess its hard for game developers to realize that sequels need to build upon the prior game's good points, not just have a slight resemblance to it.

Kane and Lynch. This game had such a good idea, such a good story with great ideas for characters. Once they were implemented, it was awful. the game was terrible and a chore to play. Even now though, I keep thinking how awesome it could have been.

Star Wars Knights of the old republic. After hearing everyone praising the game like it was the best game ever, i was expecting a lot more than walk - kill guy - enter bar - talk to guy - hear everything he says - choose your talking option - repeat. Sure, the story interested me enough to go to the end, but it felt like a chore.

GRID (Racing Driver GRID)

This game had so much promise.
When I played it, the game has *NO* tutorial and doesn't explain how to do ANYTHING.
You can spend an entire day driving the same track with pixel erfect accuracy on the curves and you'll still end up on the 14th place.

Codemasters found aperfectly good way of ruining a racing game that seemed to deliver much promise.
Ugh. That game is HORRIBLE

Personaly the multiplayer on Halo 3 keeps me playing, I feel the 4 player campaign is a large improvment to the franchise, but hey thats just me. The games I was most dissapointed in were: Devil May Cry 2, Devil May Cry 4 (felt dated and to much repetition), Assassins Creed (enjoyed the game over all but the repetitive nature of the game made me take a 3 month gap half way through before completing it). Haze though has to be my biggest let down so far though, pre-ordered it when it first was mentioned on the distant horizon, then heard the reviews and the game is okay, but for how long I waited for its release, poop.

Also Call of Duty 4, I appear to be part of a minority here but didn't enjoy CoD 4, loved CoD 2, one of my favourite games, heard infinity wards were doing CoD 4, then heard all the responces of people playing it sayiny it was the best game of 2007, therefore more hype for me, finally got the game and well, meh enjoyed the single player but felt Halo 3 multi was better.

By the way thought ESIV: Oblivion was awesome

Regurgitating something Yahtzee has said, a "perfect game" shouldn't need the multiplayer to excuse any issues. Reviewers should start carrying two scores for multiplayer games, one for the single player campaign, and one for the multiplayer. Not trying to put you down, or anything. For instance, I enjoyed Crysis, but the multiplayer sucked ass. The single player Halo 2 was annoying and disappointing as fuck, but the multiplayer is good (once you've muted the douchebags).

I could say something similar about portal but then the Valve Gestapo here would kill me.

After being an uber Star Wars fan since 1977, I was so looking forward to Sony's Star Wars Galaxies. I purchased the Collector's Ed. at the time, took a day off of work, upgraded my system.....just to have an epic logon failure as did everyone else day of launch.

I stuck with the game for a year. A year too long, always hoping that it was going to deliver on what it initally promised: an ever changing battled between the Empire and Rebellion. Instead, there were crashes, nerfs, delayed patches, delayed events, gameplay contstantly changed, Galactic Civil War meant NOTHING.

I don't even think the game today looks anything like the game that originally that launched. SOE killed it so hard, I am seriously afraid to try any other SOE online game again.

This assumes the elements of a "perfect game" are not defined by the multiplayer itself.

Shadowrun is the best first-person shooter on the Xbox 360. It is more in-depth than any other game on the system, but because it has no single player it should be considered a wash?

What about Warhawk on the PS3? If you haven't played that game you have no idea what it's like, but that game is as intense and insane as any I've ever played. It absolutely kicks butt. But again, no single player.

Of course, then there are games like Command & Conquer 3, which I was really looking forward to. It had great single player. I loved the missions. The multiplayer was abysmal. EA put no thought into the multiplayer system at all. I hated that and it ruined the game for me. Certainly, of all the games to come out on the 360 recently, Command & Conquer 3 was the most disappointing.

Since I'm the only person who is negative about portal I bet your talking to me yes I did not find the game funny except the credits which I can see on youtube for free rather than paying $20.

Half-Life 2, Part 2. I got this game from a friend of mine, and I was expecting it to be freaking awesome. I'd never played a Half-Life game before, but from all the hype, the last thing I'd expected it to be was exactly what it was: Generic. Well, actually, that's not entirely accurate, but the sections where it departed from the typical shooter formula were all pretty pathetic. I spent half the g*dd*mn game driving a hover-dinky around a muddy and blurry canal running into walls from time to time because of how badly it handled. I usually like industrial, dystopia environments most people would probably describe as "dull and brown" but JESUS CHRIST, even I got pretty bored with the scenery (or lack of) in this game. And speaking of scenery, the graphics were way below standards, another thing I wouldn't have expected judging from the hype. And it was annoyingly short, but it's already been thrashed enough for that.
