Call of Duty (Call of Duty 3 and onwards).

God of War (seriously, what exactly is so OMG AWZUM about a hack and slash title?).

Any craptacular gimmick series such as Guitar Hero, Rock Band, Wii Fit etc.

I play it, I hate the company that makes it and its way overrated. Also its full of carebears, internet tough guys and all around jackasses. If you want to dispute this go stand in one of the main cities or a battleground for about 30 seconds so that I don't have to debate with you.

Half Life series. It's a good series, but around here it's as popular as fucking jesus.
I was unaware of how popular it was to fuck Jesus...
...anyway, Starcraft is way overrated if you ask me.

Agreed. The games are fun, and it's good that they don't take themselves too seriously, but the fans of the game are like "OMG ITS THE BEST EVARRR" when it's simply "good".

Thank you for not saying Halo 3. Kind of.

Dead Rising. I just don't find it fun.

I hope this thread doesn't jump the tracks. And nice little hidden joke, I see what you did there.

And OT: I would say Guitar Hero and Rockband are up there. I mean, yes, the game is fun at parties and whatnot, but my main annoyance is with this game's fanbase because they think the playing the game well elevates you to the status of 'Youtube celebrity.' When I search guitar on youtube, I always get more gameplay videos than actual music.
Ah, this too. I LOVE Rock Band and Guitar Hero, and I love my guitar as well, but there are more videos of Beatles Rock Band than The Beatles (or so it seems).

If you're talking specifically about hype not living up to the product Halo 3 is the one that takes the cake. Pre release this game had easily the biggest media blitz in the history of gaming. Sure it was a well made game, in that it ran solidly and still contains the best lobby system ever created but it was not era defining by any stretch. The story just didn't hold up to an epic that deserved that many live action "historical documentaries" and over the top dramatizing. Even WoW's WotLK advert series were no match for the machine that MS unleashed upon us.

Although I loved FFX, I think the Final Fantasy series.
FFX remains the only storyline in the Final Fantasy series that i found beautiful. And Final Fantasy X-2 did not happen.

I would have to say to the OP, Assasins Creed.

Before you flame me until I am ashes, hear me out. (Then consider that this is entirely opinionated, and my personal opinions are completely irrelevant and most humble)

Assasins Creed got a lot of hype, hit it off with tons of people, and even those it angered are giving it another go with AC2. Talk about just rating something before you can even tell what it will be. That, imvho, is incredibly overrating a game series as most did NOT like the first one, and yet the second one is going to be a godsend?

I would like to conclude by stating that most of the "data" for this post was actually just a compilation of a lot of people putting AC2 as one of their most highly anticipated games, when i could have sworn some of them did not like the original.

As someone who has played and enjoyed all of the halo games to date, I agree 100% with your post. The media hype started way to early, was far to extensive, and would have made even THE GREATEST GAME EVER look bland and boring. So when Halo 3 came out, nobody was happy with a competent shooter with a pretty good multiplayer.

OT: I have yet to play a Final Fantasy game that was interesting enough to finish. I am not dissing anyone who likes the games, or even really the games themselves, it's mostly just my dislike of grinding and random encounters. Although, the first six pokeman games still rate among my favorite games of all time, so go figure.

There are a lot of games that I don't care for but I wouldn't call them over-rated. The reason is simple - to call something over-rated is to imply that the game recieves it's accolades without merit and I can generally at least recognize that even if I don't care for it, it isn't necissarily a bad game.

Games in the category of "Everyone but me loved it":
Final Fantasy (any, but especially 7) - There simply isn't anything that draws me into the game. I hate the grind, I hate the system used in combat and the story is doled out in such tiny chunks (compared to gameplay) that I quickly exhaust my patience. It would seem that, given the tremendous popularity of the series (and it's imitators), that millions of people like the very things that annoy me.

Metal Gear Solid (any) - It's incredibly rare that I like stealth games, and MGS is perhaps my least favorite entry in the genre. That said, while I think the story is often rubbish, I find that I enjoy the movies more than the game. While I find no joy in playing the game myself, I have gotten at least a measure of pleasure watching other people play.

Halo (Multiplayer) - As one of the most popular online games ever, there is clearly quality that people like here. The slow pace of the game however has just never interested me, and if you combine that with the fact that the game mechanics allow badass players to be almost unkillable by cannon fodder such as myself I find that I rarely have any fun. While I'm sure I could grow to love the game if I played it long enough, I simply don't feel the need to as there are plenty of other multiplayer games to keep me interested.

Zelda (any since Link to the past) - I have to be honst, Zelda just isn't the game for me. I loved a Link to the Past and played it endlessly but it represents the only game in the genre to really reach me. I played Ocarina of Time (like everybody else) but found that the part of the game I actually really loved was the side quests. The actual dungeon portions were often so annoyingly difficult that I would shut off the console in disgust with myself after faiing at some task or searching vainly for clues for an hour. I finally gave up somewhere around the Water Temple.

Killzone 2 - The single player game annoyed me to no end. Multiplayer was even worse (who in god's name decided the class with the most health should also be the fastest AND carry the biggest weapons? Or worse, who decided that the sniper with the one shot kill doom cannon should also be able to turn invisble?), and the controller physically hurt me to use for long periods. I can see why other people would like it, but the game that sold me a PS3 was are sore dissapointment.

I hardly find grinding your bum off til level 45 to do the actually pretty cool raids and the like, which due to my laziness and lust for exploration will take me weeks or even months, appealing.
Grinding in WoW = Fail. Go get some quests.
Ah, but I soon as I'm off a certain quest line with no hint as to where to go, I usually end up wandering off in territory of the enemy and get raped up the bum because I felt like exploring. Now if mapping became a skill in that game, I'd probably pick it up.
Solution: Add-ons

I'm going for the Halo series. I never found it to be epic, even though it sounded like that on paper. It's a good series, but it never had that wow effect on me as some videogame websites claimed.

I agree, Devil May Cry drove me nuts in every aspect.

The characters were brash, lame idiots. The story was ridiculous...

Making me backtrack through levels I'd already completed while they randomly changed routes to confuse me was the point I said 'fuck this in its ear' and brought the game back.

It's the only game I've EVER traded in before finishing it.

Every game is overrated because everyone has different expectations and there is usually at least one vocal fanboy for everything, so if you just look around you'll find a shining recommendation for every pile of crap there is.

Also pretty much any game my friends like: Halo 3, Call of Duty 4/WaW, Resident Evil 4/5, Half-Life, Gears of War 1/2. More that I can't think of now.

Halo, Metal Gear Solid, Resistance, Gears of War, Half-Life, Command and Conquer, Devil May Cry.

As a point of order, some people are mentioning games that are complete shit and no one likes as being overrated...They've gotta be good first guys.
