Project zero 2 [thats fatal frame 2 for you yanks :p]
not only was it scary with ghosts with plenty of 'jumpy' and 'oh shit!' moments, but it was about twins, and lets face it, twins are always creepy

oh did i mention the only weapon you have is a camera?
Not to mention the freaky woman that crawls out of a box. I have no idea why that hit me so much, I mean it was a damn empty box that almost had a 'I am inhabited by a ghost woman' sign, but I still went photo crazy.

Halo 3 online.......I still have nightmares about the shrill voices yelling....make them stop.
In all seriousness, I only had..... 6 incidents like that out of the 100+ times i play that game online.
You are very lucky then.

Fatal Frame 2 is probably the scariest. Hearing that heartbeat start and seeing that filament turning orange is most definitely a Maalox moment.

I'm going to mention Genma Onimusha as well. It's Onimusha Warlords, only better, and one of the reasons it's better is Ayame, the doll. You cannot kill her* and she's deadly. She pops up randomly and all you can do when you hear her bell is run like hell.

*Technically, you can kill her. I did it before leaving Gifu for the last time, but I had the Ogre armor, and was fully powered up with three weapons of magic. Took it all and I can't remember how many health items.

Although I have a limited opinion, having only played doom 3, resident evil 2, Bioshock, System Shock 1&2...

I think System Shock 2 is the scariest out of them.

Condemned. I still haven't finished the last level because I'm too scared of the basement!

The bit with the manikins that appear around you is so terrifying. Not to mention the bit when you drop your torch!

Half Life 2. Ravenholm never fails to terrify me, and the games oppressive atmosphere is really freaky when you play it at night, in the dark with headphones on.

I have to wonder, what was the scariest game any of you guys played before silent hill or fear or anything after playstation came out? Anyone else frightened out of wits end by Doom?

Condmened 2, if anyone hasn't played the chase sequences in that game you are missing out on some terrifying shit! I reccomend getting it just for them...
You're talking about the cabin level, right? That was one of the most intense moments of video gaming ever for me...

I sound I hated the most while playing a game was the Big Daddy Moan. Soon as I heard it, I'd stop load all of my guns, and start to set my traps.

But...over all scariest game is Condemned. I think it's just so...I don't even know how to explain how much it screws with your mind

Ok, anybody not saying Silent Hill clearly hasn't played any Silent Hill games. My advice is, play any one of them and it will dwarf any of the non-silent hill games so much that you'll think its probably a Noddy game.
You clearly havnt played any of the FEAR games or Condemned.

well, i was scared...

I have an irrational fear of F.E.A.R :(
FEAR is disgustingly non-scary, it's just fighting the same soldier 100 times while Amanda pops up, she doesn't even do anything. I kept missing her because I was looking in corners for health and ammo, or following her and having her pixelate and dissapear. It was altogether a pretty terrible game, games that have some fear to them are RE1, SH1-3 and JO.
Most games try the same thing over and over, and it's boring now.
The horror genre is dying.

For me, silent hill, condemned and eternal darkness, I can't believe people have said ravenholme, F.E.A.R, doom 3, resident evil and bioshock. Those where like the opposite of scary.

The Gamecube remake of the original Resident Evil was very frightening, and I'm not talking about "surprise I scared you scarry", this game was very well remade and very atmospheric.

Seriously. What is scary about Bioshock?
The game was fun and deep in the story department, but at no point did I consider it to be even slightly scary.

Honestly, I have to say Condemned 1. I never played 2, since I'm without a 360... But this reminds me, I have to reinstall Silent Hill 2 soon. Haven't played that in a while. Oh, and regarding people saying Resident Evil 4, I personally thought that the only truly scary part was the Regenerators. And that's only about 15 minutes of the game.
