>implying there are not oodles of names from old fiction everywhere
Besides, why does everyone find Zorah objectionable?

"Tali'Zorah?" Seriously? Do you want your children to be mocked? Maybe I'm a little sensitive on the issue for having an odd name as well, but this still seems like an awful idea. Although as many people pointing out, simply "Tali" would be much better and is a lot more acceptable (even if it is uncommon).

Not to say that people should name their children somehting boring or uninspired, but it would be better if the references were a bit more subtle. If I ever had 3 sons I would name them David, Elias, and George. Try to spot the refernce.

Baby names are important. [http://www.livescience.com/6569-good-bad-baby-names-long-lasting-effects.html]

Do understand that the name someone carries into adulthood carries with it psychological and economic ramifications that will carry into their entire lives, long after you're dead. I'm not even going to sugarcoat it... what you are doing is not merely something seen as unusual, it is an act of cruelty that may create an artificial barrier preventing them from attaining success in their chosen endevours no matter what your best chosen intentions are. Platitudes of 'oh people will just get over it' are scientifically proven to be false--the world is going to be harder for Tali'Zorah because you decided to name her Tali'Zorah. Even shortening it to Tali or Zorah isn't going to help.

This is a fucking human being. She is going to grow up to become a fucking adult, who is going to have to out into the world and god damn well land a job, and take care of herself. She needs to be named like the adult you want her to become. Naming children using the same criteria you use to name a housepet is selfish and wrong.

Tali by itself isn't a bad name, adding on the 'Zorah however mightn't be the best idea.

*shrug* all that really matters is that you love her.

Best of luck, I have a 9-month old so feel free to PM me if the new baby wears you down.

At least the child can look back on this thread and the multiple articles written elsewhere about it and have a legacy as well as the opinions of many of Daddy's peers!

Terrible idea. If my parents named me after a character from a sci-fi story as mediocre as Mass Effect, I would be a little insulted. Seriously, how is your kid ever going to survive high-school? Life has enough challenges, don't make it worse.

EDIT: I do recommend naming your child Soda or Seven, George Costanza approved.

Coming from a name nerd (who studies trends, meaning etc etc) Tali'Zorah is fine. The name pool is broadening, we have plenty of children being called Neveah, Florence, Indigo, Clementine, Cruz, Maximus etc etc

I honestly doubt the OP will be ruining his child's life. Taken out of context to the average person (its a smoosh name) and a pretty one too. Both names by themselves are legitimate. And if we can name children after literary, movie etc characters why not video game ones? Although the point was that the OP was taking inspiration from the game and not making a statement.

Personally I would take the apostrophe out to make documentation easier, but hey not my kid.

Just reporting to those who were wondering, she's born, and happy and healthy. The doctor and the people who filled out the birth certificate love her name. I'm pretty sure she's the greatest thing that's ever happened on this Earth : )

Congrats, OP.

Guess it's too late... Pretty much felt the same -- splitting it into first and middle names. Guess all that's left to do is decorate her room as the Normandy. Who knows? Maybe she will join the Navy to take a pilgrimage.

Almost all of those haters assume three things, which I think are largely wrong.

1. Many people will understand the reference, this will lead to them "mocking" her for some reason.

2. This name will somehow impact her in a serious way. Sexton is a surname, think about that for a moment. "Sexton" as in gravedigger. And that is really the tip of the "names are fucking stupid when you research them" iceberg.

3. People will care what her name is/means/where its from at all. A bit subjective maybe but I really don't have time to give a shit about your name, only that you're doing your job/aren't being a twit. I think a lot of people feel the same way.

Long story short, congrats OP :)

This discussion seems to have gone on for quite some time, but I still feel like I have a suggestion that may be a little different than what I read so far.

First, you shoul name your child so that the name will work for your child in a positive manner throughout her life. Depending on where you are in the world that might differ. So choosing a strong name that will work for her while still making you happy, we should look at some name variations that sounds like Tali'Zora. Most people have already gone into the reasons why splitting the name in two is a good idea (and I agree) so I won't go into that.

Likenesses of Tali
Tali - typically a girls name but not necessarily depending on culture. Hebrew for Dew of Heaven
Talia or Tahlia - no longer as popular as Tali (probably thanks to ME). Popular east European name and means just Dew in Hebrew.
Natalia - A rather popular Russian and Latin name. It used to carry the meaning Born on Christmas Day.
Natalie - Western version.

Likeness of Zohra
Zohra - is of Arabic origin and means Venus
Zara - is of Arabic origin and means Blooming Flower
Sarah - a popular name of Hebrew origin and means Princess

My pick would be Natalie Sarah, because both are pretty names that have proven to last millennia.

Here are some famous Natalies:
Natalie Wood, American actress, born July 20th 1938
Natalie Portman, actress, born June 9th 1981
Natalie Imbruglia, singer and actress, born February 9th 1975
Natalie Cole, singer, born February 6th 1950
Natalie Maines, singer, born October 14th 1974
Natalie du Toit, swimmer, born January 29th 1984

Here are some famous Sarahs:
Sarah McLachlan (b. Jan.28,1968), musician
Saint Sarah, Patron Saint of Gypsies
Sara Teasdale (b. Aug. 8, 1884), American poet
Sarah Polk (b. Sept. 4, 1803), First Lady from 1845*1849
Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York (b. Oct. 15, 1959)
Sarah Jessica Parker (b. March 25, 1965), actress
Sarah Bernhardt (b. Oct. 22, 1845), actress

Edit: just noticed that I'm a bit late and the child is named already. Well, I must say you have chosen an absolutely beautiful name for your daughter. I hope she will wear it well and that she will fill you and your wife with pride over deeds and accomplishments. Congrats and Good Luck! I hope you get to play Mass Effect with her one day so she can truly appreciate the joy, love and courage that inspired her name.

No, I'm assuming she's going to want a job at some point in her adult life.

2. This name will somehow impact her in a serious way. Sexton is a surname, think about that for a moment. "Sexton" as in gravedigger. And that is really the tip of the "names are fucking stupid when you research them" iceberg.
Is your opinion based on research or did you pull it out of your ass? MY opinion is based on countless studies into names and their effect on economic prosperity. Yours is based on.... what, exactly? A feeling?

How scientific.

3. People will care what her name is/means/where its from at all. A bit subjective maybe but I really don't have time to give a shit about your name, only that you're doing your job/aren't being a twit. I think a lot of people feel the same way.
Again, they did studies on this. People actually do care--it's a well documented and researched field of study.

Tali is a perfectly normal name that's been in use for centuries. It's either short for Talia, or Natalie/Natalia, or a name in its own right. Tali'Zorah specifically is more of an odd choice but it is a good name and there's no reason to think anything of it. The only issue I would suggest is that having a first name with an apostrophe in it will cause her issues on forms, sites and more, throughout her life. It *will* be a bugbear that 99% of the time people will be confused or uncertain how to deal with a first name that has an apostrophe in it. Even a hyphenated first name can be difficult to process.

There's nothing wrong with naming a child with inspiration from any source. What about (Na)Tali(e) Zara as a first and middle name instead? Inspired by, but not the same as, and both are good human names. Just please don't name your good human child with a Turian name; those bastards started the war and I'll be damned before I forget!

Pictures, eh...I suppose if she's already all over the Facebooks of family members then she's already all over the public Internet. I'm trying to get life back to normal (yeah right, the "normal" I knew isn't coming back) but I'll see what I can do.

Ok aside from all the other problems she might run into, consider this.

When she's looking for a job, it can be very problematic, she's going to have to give them her full name and despite the fact that employers aren't reall yallowed to, they will judge her based on that, and it could make life more difficult for her. Having a name that stands out can be both good and bad and the image a name carries also has a major impact. My first name is Cornelius, and it's not the name I'm called by, but I still use it professionally over my middle name, which is what most people call me. Cornelius isn't all that common nowadays so it stands out, but in the right way, it carries a certain weight to it. Once I speak to possible employers I simply ask them to call me by my surname, which is shorter and easier and still pretty unique, just remarking that most people call me by it instead since it's shorter.

That being said, Tali is not a bad idea, it won't hinder her in life. You could always split it and make her middle name Zorah, which while you get to still call your child Tali Zorah, won't be a nuisance, she can choose to simply sign it as Z
