Really not understanding much of the hate for the 2DS. I have a 3DS XL and would have brought this if it had been released before hand. The fact is I rarely use the 3D on my console, and this is the perfect solution for that. Also I rarely take it anywhere with me and would never carry it in my pocket, so the size wouldn't be an issue.
In fact I'm seriously debating selling my 3DS XL and some games, and picking one of these ups and making a small bit of extra cash on the side.
I especially thought the Escapist would be more open minded though; with the amount of people who usually complain about the 3D effects on the console, this has certainly surprised me.
Here's the thing. The 3D was supposed to be so important to the system that it's in the name so for Nintendo to even offer a non-3D 3DS is surprising and it devalues the 3D feature from here on out as it's no longer a standard feature. For those who like the 3D effect, that would change everything.
Maybe you don't take your 3DS out but Nintendo designed it to be something people would take with them everywhere, hence the streetpass feature. The 2DS not having a clamshell design is probably going to see it left at home more than the 3DS. I don't take my Vita out much because it doesn't fit in my pocket but my 3DS goes with me all the time.
Also, some 3DS games have a great soundtrack, reducing the sound to mono is a slap in the face to those soundtracks.
But not everyone likes the 3DS but likes Nintendo games - now those people who want to play the new Nintendo games coming out can do so, without the 3D, at a much cheaper price. I don't see how that's a bad thing - it's only a good thing for Nintendo. The games are still going to be made in 3D so it won't be 'devaluing the 3D feature', it just gives a new choice for consumers. Also as the main poster says it's also meant for children 7 years and under who cannot play the games because of 3D features. Easy solution, opens up a new consumer base for Nintendo, and a cheaper price for the kids parents.
Furthermore the streetpass feature where I live is pretty moot - you wouldn't get a hit on it at all unless you went somewhere extremely public or somewhere that you knew there would be other DS players. Children also aren't going to be that bothered about streetpass. I rarely take my 3DS XL out anyway.
Lastly if the soundtrack is so great it will be enjoyed ether way. Don't really get this point so I won't argue it, but needless to say a soundtrack does not 'make' a game.
They could play the games without 3D with the 3DS OG and 3DS XL. Let's not pretend that this model is the only one that allows 2D gaming. You say it's only good for Nintendo but in my previous posts I have listed why it isn't.
- They are competing against themselves
- This is going to cause unnecessary confusion
This does devalue the 3D feature, you know how non standard features are treated by third parties. 3D not being a standard feature anymore may very well affect future 3DS games.
I don't think your personal experience with Streetpass matters to this discussion nor is the fact that YOU don't take your 3DS out very often. Then again, you have an XL and that damn thing is huge too. It's size is one of the reasons I prefer my original 3DS.
Well, you may think there is no difference in mono and stereo but a handheld released in 2013 with mono sound is shameful. Maybe it saves Nintendo a quarter to not include that extra speaker.
