Nintendo Can Disable a Pirate's 3DS Remotely

Are you kidding regional lock out?
As someone who has gone to the painful effort of importing games rather than pirating them in the past, this is a massive kick in the face.

I really don't care about the piracy detection thing, but if there is regional lock outs, I definitely won't be wasting my money getting a console where I won't be able to play games that aren't sold in my region. I live in Australia, so importing games gets me them months to years ahead of our release dates over here, and that's if they get released here at all, we often miss out on great games just because they aren't main stream.

If nintendo does this I swear I will just wait till an emulator gets released, it could take a decade, I'm patient..

It's been painful enough trying to get my hands on Rune Factory 3 released over a year ago in japan and 4 months ago in the US. Oh wait it's not being released here and under that system I would be unable to play a game I love unless I buy a second console.

I wanna punch a nintendo rep...

As others have said, have no intention to pirate and I wouldn't even know how, but the fact Nintendo can do this is a little to 1984 if they can know how many steps I'm taking. Sale lost.

Thing is, the people who provide pirated games are clever. They will find a way to get past Nintendo's DRM thingy, and pirating will continue as always.

But one thing I dont get, and people seem to be against is homebrew games. Whats wrong with them? I played one or two before. They wern't great, but killed some time while wainting for real things to come out. This will kill any 3DS that someone put tried to run a homebrew game on. Bit harsh, no?

As long as they let you appeal to have it debricked or replaced I see no problem with it, and they'd have to be damn careful about who they brick in the first place.

I don't mind anti-piracy measures as long as they don't affect me.

Really not liking this trend of locking down devices so they can only be used in the way the manufacture wants. I support trying to decrease piracy, but yet again the cost is too much. But people will quite happily buy these products with tighter and tighter controls on.

Just wait until you have to get your TV and DVD / Blu-ray play to log into an on-line account so they can check you are not watching stuff they don't approve of or make it difficult for you to resell them 2nd hand due to being locked to you. That's the way we are going.

And I will be there saying I told you so.....

getting real tired of the control freaks in the console industry. Do they not realize that they are only giving bigger challenges to hackers and pirates? That's the reason why most hackers and pirates do it, not to gain something for free but for the challenge and the ego trip.

Eh, what do i care? I never buy games online, only at the local store so i'm not affected by the region lock and also i'm sure all games i get are legit so Nintendo can just keep it up for all i care.

I was DEFINITELY going to own the 3DS, and now I never will. I had no intent to pirate anything, but simply by inserting an R4 into my device, you want to brick it. Go get someone else's money, then. You won't be getting mine. Such a shame, I heard you really like that stuff...

Everyone makes mistake. Just because they are big and rich doesn't mean they are perfect and would never make mistake.
Take EA for example.

I can't believe just how many of you people think that all these "lost sales" from pirates is going to cause them to lose any money.

Okay let me explain it to you bit by bit.
A pirate buys a DS to play pirated games instead of using an emulator which is free.
The money from the bought DS goes to the company but not the games, they still are getting money though.
With their "disabling whole 3DS" thingy going on,pirates would NOT even BUY a
Console and instead would use the FREE emulator with FREE games which means the company loses sales of the console AND the games at the same time instead of getting the profit on console but not on games.
Half IS better than NONE.
Simple enough?

Every major company not just Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony but also movie and music industries do some kind of anti pirating methods to at least make it harder on them.

By doing this they punish the consumer instead. Like the EA 10$ project or the Ubisoft suckish DRM. This kind of behavior just promotes the consumer to pirate the piece of software.
Tell me this, would you rather BUY a software with cold hard cash just to get a gimmicky and buggy DRM with it or rather get it for FREE with absolutely no problem and even sometimes better support than the actual game itself.

I don't have the words to say just how stupid that post was.

Strictly on this anti piracy thing, I give Nintendo thumbs up. Screw you lazy bastards that refuse to give game designers what they earned. If you wanna take money out of their pockets, I see no reason why Nintendo shouldn't do the same to you. Regional lock out is what the author suggested as an "easier" solution to potential regional errors. It's my bad for flying off the handle. Anyway regional lock outs are NOT a good solution for a lot of us!

For all i care, i won't be usingwifi, since it CAN be turned off, and I won't definatly be playing games. Like someone else said, the mob mentality here is outstanding. Yes, there can be mistakes as in Nintendo bricking someone who didn't deserve it, but if it ultimatly help to reduce Piracy, i don't mind at all.

Hell, my guess is htye will be very, VERY conservative using this to prevent evetual lawsuits, so no big harm would be done, it's not like the end of the world or anything.

When I buy a console I make a note to myself to only buy official products for it. That's because I only buy games that I know are good and will have fun with. Besides, pirating consoles is a huge pain in the ass, though in Greece everyone and their dog had a pirated PS2 and they looked at me funny when I told them that all the 34 games I own are official.

But, after reading this, I am hesitant to buy a 3DS, because I am afraid I will do something to anger it, something irrelevant to piracy, mind you, but who guarantees that the device won't just snap and do whatever it likes?
