...You would have thought this lesson would have been learnt by now. Don't issue challenges to hackers.

while i think that the heyday of piracy IS going to come to a close within the next 10 years, i doubt the 3ds' security will last long. the 3ds is a nice peice of hardware in the respect its a portable gaming system. its not nearly as sophisticated as a ps3, xbox 360, or pc. nintendo is VERY good at innovation, but i have never (except when i was young) been super impressed with nintendos hardware.

"and that pirates will have a hard time cracking its 3DS."
Oh....wow *facepalm*.....here's a tip nintendo, when you're trying to sneak through the lion cage, don't start pouring beef broth on your head and screaming "come eat me" at the top of your lungs

"Yarnton mentions the R4 by name, which isn't surprising - the infamous flashcart was perhaps the single most damaging blow dealt to Nintendo's popular DS platform, as it enabled quick and easy piracy of DS software."

It was not even close tot he biggest blow. The biggest blow is the elephant in the room that everyone wants to ignore. The one that effects the 3DS, Wii, PS3, 360 and every other console. Used games sales. They hurt the game creators and publishers more than any other single thing.

I like FADE for the fact that the game lets you play it, then slowly degrades to a point that you cant even play it without yelling at the game.
And now for the PC gaming equivilant of the Price is Right losing horns:
Seriously, FADE is one of the best DRMs for lolz. Pity hardly anyone uses it and it's easily avoided.

Everyone says this when their new anti-piracy method comes out, and time and time again it fails completely.

It's a fight against human nature. As long as people want something for free and feel entitled to having it for free, they will find a way to get it.

Random thoughts:

Anyone can make a security system they themselves can't break.

I've yet to see an antipiracy solution that was touted as easily breakable. And I've seen 'em back a long way [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lenslok].
Y'know .... that makes me really think... Why did we stop having those black on red printed sheets where we had to look up F7 to get into the game ?

Or at least authenticated serial numbers for online play ?

It strikes me that its cheap to do, and prevents ebil pirates from getting the majority of the game.

You're never going to stop people who pride themselves on cracking the shit out of everything so far released, so just don't bother. Hell even use the same key generating system for everything ? I mean why not ? You'll still have to authenticate to get the online stuff (ie months of play online compared to maybe 10-12 hours solo) so *shrug*.

Since in most games the solo stuff is just a trainer for the online, why not just give it away free and stick up a pay wall for online ?

Cheap, awesome publicity and a whole bundle more interest in you because you weren't a dick about your game.
