The wiimote was revolutionary tech, even with its semi-reputation for gimmicky and forced implementations. But regardless of that both MS and Sony recognized it for what it was and jumped on the technology themselves.
However, I think Fils-Aime's challenge would have carried more weight if they could point to some games using their new special controller in some really captivating and innovative ways. It may be a useful media tool, but is it revolutionary game technology? Penny Arcade's Game Master suggestion is the best I've seen so far, but the proof is in the pudding. If Nintendo can pull this off than MS and Sony will no doubt play catch up again . . . but otherwise I think the Wii U will be remembered as Nintendo's attempt to catch up to MS and Sony.
