Nintendo Slashing 3DS Price by a Third

Copy/paste from what I said in another forum:

I'm not stupid enough to buy that thing. I'm pretty sure another version of the 3DS is on the horizon, and that thing will be as expensive as the first one released. Nintendo has done it with every single handheld console, and funnily enough, every iteration of handheld devices that comes from them basically print money.

Also, unless they (hopefully) release more third-party games and/or change the ToS regarding the device, I'm staying as far away from the 3DS as possible. And since I'm pretty certain that neither is gonna happen, I'm more than happy to disregard this device.

Any word on of this will affect Europe as well? I just bought a full-price 3DS last week.

This was a brilliant and underhanded move by Nintendo. I'm ok with it, because I think the 20 games will be worth the 80 extra bucks I spent on the system. However, it still must be mentioned that this was an extremely underhanded move to make more money, and I'm not sure how well it speaks to the image that Nintendo likes to maintain.
How is this underhanded? At all? Lowering the price significantly and compensating people who bought it already is pretty good. I dont know how you could be upset unless you bought a 3ds just now.

Before the launch of the system Ubisoft was talking about how Nintendo was going to work with them more to help third party games get a better shot at sales. Then the 3DS up and launches with no first party titles worth mentioning, and a ton of Ubisoft and other third party titles.

It gave me an aching suspicion Nintendo was holding off on their own games for that reason.

After all, they already admitted to knowing that launching a new system without their heavy-hitter first-party titles was a bad idea. When they launched the Wii they admitted as much about their failing to do so with the Gamecube.

So either they totally forgot that lesson learned a few years ago, or they caved into third party pressure to give them less competition to start off with.
Never let it be said that a Japanese company is unwilling to tank a product in the short term to prove a point. no one buys Nintendo for third party titles, and the classic third party titles that once where have strayed so far from their roots as to be only marginally interesting anymore, if they are being used by Nintendo at all.

What's underhanded about it?
You lower the price, more people buy it. Its about the most common and least unethical thing a business can do to increase sales.
And to top it all off, they're giving people who bought in early (like myself) free games to compensate for the higher price we paid (which wasn't actually that high because every retailer in town had massive price drops at launch to compete with each other).

It does yes. Check Nintendo of Europe's site, I think they had a mention of it earlier.

Does this apply to the uk? I bought mine for only £150 so if I get a bunch of free games I'll be sitting pretty :D

Oh and I personally really like the 3ds. Just give it another year and there'll be way more to do with it.

This is one of the main problems with Nintendo's marketing. I showed my friends my 3DS and they thought the 3D effect was ok, but they loved the AR games and the Face shooting games. Their exact words were, "Why is nintendo not mentioning this awesome stuff in their marketing!?!"
Until People see that the 3D is not the only benefit, and Nintendo start showing off the Streetpass/Spotpass stuff and the gyroscope/AR capabilities, these complaints are still going to keep coming up...
Streetpass is useless to me, I live in a tiny village, only going into the nearby town for shopping or the city for university. Even then I'd be lucky to pick up a few other 3DSs, much like what Yahtzee's experience when he reviewed the 3DS. I also don't like that my 3DS would need to be in sleep mode. I always turn my DS off, saves battery from my experience.

And the gyroscope? I don't want to waggle my DS around. Thats what the directional pads are for. Can you imagine playing a motion sensing game on an underground in the morning rush hour? I'd be earning glares to Mississipi and back. (just so you know, I don't like motion controls XD the only exception is Flower on the PS3 but that's a home console, so its a little different than a handheld)

I bought a DS to play games, none of the extra features matter to me, they just ram the price up.

The 3d is a joke, but the console itself is really solid. Just need to build up the calluses on your thumb and index fingers because the dpad and the shoulder buttons are much pointier than on the ds lite.

If you check 3ds and ds lite side by side the tolerances on the 3ds are way tighter and it just feels like a high quality device.

I couldn't justify 250 when I had a perfectly working ds lite but at 170 I will be picking this one up for xmas.

I'm pretty happy about this. I actually got a 3ds for only $5 more than what the sale price will be plus I get a bunch of old, classic games. I saw one poster mention this, but the 3d is hardly a good reason to buy it. It's interesting sure, but doesn't really add anything. NOW, the social aspects of streerpass are pretty neat and the ar games could really go somewhere. The gyroscope and accerometer are a blast. That's really what nintendo needs to focus on, not the 3d fad that's taken off. I hardly even use the 3d, but it still was worth the purchase.

I'm still partially on the fence...I could grab one now and pick up those 20 freebies...but there's still the issue of battery life...and you know before the holiday season we will also see the (western) release of at least one new color (flare red: available now in Japan because they can).

So, do I want a blue one now with 20 classic games or do I want a red one later as an X-Mas present to me...? Hell, I don't know...I'll either flip for it, sleep on it or, wait until I see my next two or three checks...

It still needs games. And not re-releases of games that I already have. Why did they even release the 3DS this early if they didn't have the games to back it up?

I would be happy about the eShop games if I hadn't lent my 3DS to a friend who lives about two hours away last week

I still have my doubts... I'll wait for the PSVita to come out before making any hasty decision yet.

Until they beef up their JRPG/Anime Fantasy Adventure lineup, Nintendo can **** all. Zelda Ocarina of Time...IN SPACE! *Checks Wii console and finds it for $10* Snake Eater...IN SPACE! *Checks closet for PS2 version*

Like the Wii, the 3DS has underwhelmed me (to the point of waiting . The simple fact is that if you've played on Mario or Zelda, you've played them all. Same could be said for all genres, but I'll trust a million other developers to at least give it a go at originality before Nintendo. After all, the only game I care about on the Wii is DQX, and that means a new DQ game for 3DS must be millions of years away. It's not like the DS is going anywhere.

I'd wait for a bit to see if theres decent game support before investing in a Vita...
