Erm, I just logged into the Eshop (Bought my 3DS at launch day) And tried purchasing a virtual console game, as you mentioned would be free.

However it's saying I have insufficient funds.

My 3DS is up to date as well.

The ambassador package isn't actually happening right now. An "Ambassador" is getting the games at a later date, almost definitely after the price drop. Currently all that is being done is telling people about the deal. No free games as of yet.

Ya...I found it right after I posted about the same question xD

"The programme contains two elements:

1.Beginning Sept. 1st, Nintendo 3DS Ambassadors will be able to download 10 NES? Virtual Console? games at no charge and before they are available in Nintendo eShop for the general public. These games, including Super Mario Bros.?, Donkey Kong Jr.?, Balloon Fight?, Ice Climber? and The Legend of Zelda?, will be released as paid downloadable games, but Ambassadors can download them in advance of launch for free. Once the paid versions of the games are released in Nintendo eShop later in the year, the updated versions will be available to Ambassadors for download at no cost.

2. By the end of 2011, Nintendo will provide Ambassadors with 10 Game Boy Advance Virtual Console games. These include games like Yoshi?s Island?: Super Mario? Advance 3, Mario Kart?: Super Circuit, Metroid? Fusion, WarioWare?, Inc.: Minigame Mania and Mario vs. Donkey Kong?. These games will be available exclusively to Ambassadors, and Nintendo currently has no plans to make these 10 games available to the general public on Nintendo 3DS in the future."

There you go it was rather high priced and the first owners did indeed take the burn. But to keep selling it the price just is rather high [definitely since the small choice of games still]

Eh I stick with the DS that has a battery life of over 8 hours personally.

And well only black and blue out yet seriously wasn't nintendo the company with the 15 different colors. Where is bright red? Or pink!

free (if you pay an extra $80) games of nintendo's choice (not yours)

its not free if you have to pay for it why not wait for the price drop then use the $80 you saved to buy games of your choice?.

Sadly for Nintendo no amount of price drops is going to make me want a 3DS. There just isn't much there for me, and based on the line-up not much for everyone else either. Plus the $80 drop seems somewhat of a steep drop. Something tells me that the drop is a combination of both poor sales and trying to one-up the Vita on price point when it comes out, something the Vita had over the 3DS (among other things). Whether or not this ends up in Nintendo's favour remains to be seen, but either way this does seem like a desperation move, and one that to be honest seems odd for Nintendo. They've always had low prices, but rarely do they drop prices, especially by so much in so little of time. Maybe they are worried about the Vita despite what they say, or maybe they're just not confident enough in the Winter Holiday sales that they need to actually reduce prices to gain interest during that time of the year.

Will the 20 free games apply to people who buy after the announcement? Because I'll shell out the extra money if it means Metroid and Mario Kart.
Even if it doesn't, at $170 it looks like I'll get around to buying it finally. Especially since I can rebuy my favorite GBA games. Though I will have to keep my DS lite around to buy those I still have, but whatever man.

So long as you register it before August 11th you'll get your free games

This price drop also means that the 3DS is going to be sold at a loss for a while acording to Nintendo themselves

Bloomberg Japan reports today that the new 3DS price point means Nintendo will incur a loss on every system sold. At a press conference in Osaka today, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata justified this by saying that such major moves were necessary in order to improve fiscal performance next year and beyond.

Nintendo slashed the price of the 3DS earlier today worldwide. In Japan, the system was cut from its launch price of ¥25,000 to ¥15,000. Early adopters who paid the initial price will be given access to 20 free Famicom (NES) and Game Boy Advance Virtual Console games, some exclusively.

In addition to the price cut, Nintendo announced lowered earnings targets for the year. SMBC senior analyst Eiji Maeda told Bloomberg that 40% of the lowered revision was due to the 3DS price cut. Securities Japan analyst Masayuki Ohtani expressed surprise at how quick the price cut came.

Ohtani also suggested that investors might rush to sell Nintendo stock, although he doesn't believe the stock will drop below 10,000 yen. Nintendo stock ended the day at 14,000 yen, up 0.1% from the day prior. On the 27th, one day before the price cut and earnings report announcements, the stock had temporarily dropped to 13,770 yen, its lowest point since December 2005.

Nintendo usually holds a Tokyo earnings briefing the day after its Osaka earnings briefings. It's likely that will get more information there.
iSupply really fucked up with their estimation of it's cost then.

YAY METROID FUSION!

Oh my gosh I love that game so much and to finally get to play it again is awesome.

Add 19 other games to that and I think the extra 80 dollars I paid was worth it.

Also I'm pretty sure Nintendo is still making money off of this while the Vita is being sold at a loss again so yeah... still looking pretty good for Nintendo.

Fortunately, Nintendo doesn't plan to leave those people out in the cold, and is offering 20 free downloadable games to anyone who bought a 3DS at the higher price that signs in to the 3DS eShop before August 12th.

looks like if you use the 3DS and log into the eShop before August 12 (before the price drop) then you get the games.

If you buy it after the price drop, no free games.

my question is this though:

how much would those games actually come out to if you were to download them individually?
I don't have my Wii at the moment, so I'll be estimating the prices:
NES games cost $5 USD (500 points)
SNES games cost $8 USD (800 points)
N64 games cost $12 USD (1200 points)

I'd imagine that NES games on the 3DS would also be $5, and GBA games would be around $10?

10 NES games = $50
10 GBA games = $100

so
if you buy a 3DS now and get all 20 games it would cost you $249.99+tax
if you buy a 3DS after the price drop and then buy all 20 games, it would cost you $319.99+tax

wow, so you'll be getting the 3DS at $80 less, but if you want everything the original purchasers got you'll be paying $70 more... Interesting balance...

Most people who bought a 3DS at launch aren't quite bright enough to a) do the math; and b) think that far ahead.

Oh man, Nintendo is going to make a killing this holiday. Every 6 year old in the country is going to want one, and the new price is going to look far, far more attractive to their parents. I guess those extra $80 was pure markup on their part if $170 is still a profitable price point. It's not like they found a cheaper or more effective way to manufacture it, seeing as how it already cost a pittance to make in the first place...

20 free games because I own a 3ds? Yes, please! I'm curious as to what the whole lineup will be. Though it sounds like it will all be purely nintendo owned franchises. Very stoked for a free copy of Metroid fusion. Maybe they'll throw in minish cap too...

Regarding UK+EU prices

Nintendo are still not setting a retail price for the 3DS but are cutting the cost that they sell them to stores by roughly 1/3 source [http://www.metro.co.uk/tech/games/870671-3ds-price-cut-knocks-a-third-off-price] As we know that the price to stores was around £170 that takes it down to around £112 that Nintendo is making on each UK sale of a 3DS anything that ti is costing you over that is the store marking it up and getting a lot of pure profit on it.

To repeat after August 12th anything over £120 for a 3DS is the STORE being greedy not Nintendo

My birthday is the third of August and the 3DS was all I wanted. Now I'll have it before the price change, so it's still expensive, but I'll have a bunch of free games that my family wouldn't have been able to afford if this hadn't taken place.

I has a happy.
