No Windows XP Support for Just Cause 2

It's an admittedly jerkassed move on Avalanche's part, but Windows XP is almost ten years old at this point. There are two more operating systems available now. Most computers don't even last as long as XP has been around, so it's really not all that unreasonable that they expect most PC gamers to have an OS from the last three years. Sure, you can complain about it, and the anger is understandable, but it's like complaining that Killzone 2 doesn't run on the PS2. It's an outdated system, and XP is an outdated OS. You can't exactly condemn them for not worrying about supporting it anymore.

I hope this won't turn into a trend, while I do own a copy of windows 7 I've just been really reluctant to switch over just because of having to completely reinstall everything (for some reason my Windows 7 copy doesn't support upgrading). This would be a huge pain because I have to go hunt down save files (what happened to them being in their respective game folders? Some save in My Docs now, wtf?) for various game and then actually have to re download all my steam games. And I'm sure hunting down all my drivers will be a treat...
Oh well, like I said I hope it doesn't turn into a trend, but for me its still a case of "if it isn't broken don't fix it".
I upgraded to windows 7 and didn't have to reinstall a thing.

I had a friend do it for me though, so I have no idea how.
I think it depends on which version of 7 you have, I bought window 7 when there was a student promotion which made it pretty much dirt cheap.

Yeah, so what?

And that Steam survey doesn't say a lot, because for one, it doesn't say if all those XP users on Steam have the kind of hardware to run JC2 in the first place, because chances are, they don't.
I think you really underestimate people who use XP, Vista was a load of garbage for a long time in terms of gaming thus a lot of PC users stuck to XP and never went out of their way to buy vista, thus say a person bought/made a new gaming rig in the last year or year and a half or so (which by most definitions would/should be able to run JC2) why bother to go out and buy a copy of vista with windows 7 on the horizon when you have your trusty copy of XP around?

OMG games don't support windows 98!!!

I really don't see why people complain about this. I still use xp, but plan to get a new pc soon anyway, as I can't run the latest game aswell as I won't.

XP has had a good run, and we are lucky it has been supported for so long, but if its holding progression back, then I say scrap it.

I hope this does become a trend. The industry has to push forward eventually, and XP is 9 years old already.

I remember being absolutely psyched when Relic announced that Company of Heroes required 1gb of RAM to play, because the requirement had been 512mb for so long you could tell that none of the developers were very interested in pushing the limits at all. Big surprise that Company of Heroes ended up being an unbelievable game while also being an impressive technical achievement.

If you remember the early to mid 90's you would remember all kinds of advancements like this. I remember Wing Commander 3 being one of the first video games to require a CD-ROM as it would not be available on floppy disks.

Good for them for ditching DX9 support! Granted it is at the loss of WinXP, but seriously the O/S is almost 9 years old at some point you have to draw a line.

I loved WinXP, and while I currently run Vista, Win7 should be a pretty solid gaming platform.

Desktop market share for January 2010, taken straight from Wikipedia, because I'm a lazy bum:

Windows XP - 66.31%
Windows Vista - 17.39%
Windows 7 - 7.51%

So let me get this straight, they're willingly giving up at least 50% of their PC sales?

Good "jorb" Just Cause.

And by the way, Win Xp can use Dx10.

You're not allowed to say that. Microsoft said it can't and so it is law!

But yeah, we need to move on sometime. Just that Just Cause 2 isn't the sort of game the make it worth it.

Edit: Oh, oh, I got one! It's not a Just Cause for upgrading from XP. YEEEEEAHHH.

yeah, but i don't want to fuck up my now unsupported OS.
if someone doesn't start, that number is all the more likely to remain the same.
i say good, make gaames that make me want to upgrade from my machine.
i challenge them.

Well it just menas its not a block buster, if they can't afford to support XP then they won't take the effort to make a excellent game.

Well, now I have too upgrade.... too VISTA *evil music*
Might want to just jump to Windows 7...

I personally don't like either version, but windows 7 is atleast a little less annoying than Vista... By that I mean I didn't want to fully slam my GF's new laptop into the wall like I wanted to with her older laptop that ran vista... Atleast not yet anyway... LOL

This may be just to try to push gamers into getting a newer OS... I'm not biting that bullet. I'd rather go without a game than to have to upgrade to what I feel is worse than what I have already...

I don't think I do. All I'm saying is that the acutal number of people with the approriate rig AND Windows XP is probably lower than the overall XP share on Steam, and I even venture to say that it's by a long shot. But I do agree that there's still a significant portion of XP users with gaming hardware out there.

On a different note, I don't think this is jerkish on the side of Avalanche, but more of MS who, in their infinite wisdom, made DX10 a Vista-only show. See, DX10 is a complete overhaul of the DirectX architecture, and from what I get, it's for the better. I don't think it would have been a problem developing it for XP, too, but MS didn't in a jerkish move to push Vista (yeah, way to go) usage.

That all being said, I think it's time for a big name to move away from the developer hell that DX9 appears to be and embrace DX10 - if it hadn't been for MS' foolish business strategy from the Vista age, we'd have seen this kind of thing way earlier, and no one would have had to complain.

Unless he wants to re-program the entire engine, I doubt it. dx9 and dx10/dx11 are completely different.

All this hate out there for Vista...

I run Vista 64bit version, built the PC myself just over 2 years ago and I have had ZERO problems after the incredibly frustrating first day. ZERO.

This day has been coming for some time, can people honestly expect developers to keep delivering dx9 compatible games if it comes at the expense of the game's quality?

The following message goes out to all you XP gamers that spent a load of money on a PS3 or Xbox360 (or both) instead of doing what I did (saving up that money to build a proper gaming machine with dx10 hardware and OS) and now think that you have a right to complain: Sucks to be you.

Honestly, following this thread's logic you might as well complain that nobody makes decent N64 games.

I think it's fair enough, support is always for the 2 most recent OS's, things had to move forward to DX10/11 someday.

I'm running 64bit W7 and had 64bit Vista beforehand and had no problems with it except a few stupid plug and play issues but those were easily fixed and weren't worth a 2 page forum rant. in short, even if this had Dx9 compatibility it would be irrelivant due to the high specs, and nobody with specs that work for the game will have problems with an OS, end of story.

And if you're afraid of upgrading due to all the "horror" stories going around about everything but XP, frankly you're gullable. For the smallest loss in performance, if at all go for W7.
