... It's not like he broke cartographer completely with that saving change update.

Wonder how maps in the nether work.
Not well I hear. The cartography has really gone to hell.

OTL Is it just me, or does he seem to be faster with these patches now.
It's his team that makes most of them. He just gets all the credit and cash.
...

Are you suggesting that Notch doesn't pay the employees at his company?
Lol, he doesnt own Mojang, he's just the only thing that's keeping it running.
"Mojang (mojäng being Swedish for gadget) is a Swedish, independent video game developer founded in May 2009 under the name Mojang Specifications by Markus Persson."
Well f*ck me then for not checking this up, sorry about that.

Awww, now I'll have to find something else to do with all my dirt instead of building pillars into the sky box so I can always spot my way home.

Alright.

Though it does kinda render the compass useless.
Depends a bit on the building requirements for the 'map'. Might be it takes a lot longer to get the resources for a map than a compass.

Though to be honest, I suspect map will just be like, ink + leather or something.

Just build gigantic landmark towers with signs on them to tell you where you are! Those always work and you can see them from 100 square blocks anywhere :)!!

This is going to be awesome for the Yogcast.
I imagine it will be like this.
Lewis: Simon, where's the map?
Simon: The what?
Lewis: The map -character here- gave us.
Simon: Oh that. I don't have it.

Meh, I can't imitate them that well.

Haven't been interested in Minecraft for a couple months now - didn't feel like there was any progress to make. Exploration's one of the things I like most, but running around through chunks just doesn't feel satisfying on its own. Being able to track it, map out the world as I go? Definitely worth at least a trial run.

Sounds awkward as hell as map systems go, but then, that's Minecraft in a nutshell, isn't it.

Player created books eh? I could make a minecraft diary.

Day 7: Built a wall. Creepers blew it up. Damn creepers...
Day 13: found a wolf, was going to train it, creeper ruined it.

Day 42: Finally have my vengeance, created a creeper powered creeper cannon, in unrelated news, first creeper was shot into space today.

OT: WOOO! now I can finally actually explore around the minecraft world without fear of getting lost!

or, having to save and quit to open and update minecraft cartographer.
Day 112: The creeper I shot into space landed on me.

Can you mount the maps on the wall and use them as decoration? because i really want to be able to do that, it'd make scene, if you do a lot of exploring then you could build map stations and whenever you come to one it'd be easier to just walk in and look at the wall rather than dig around in a chest.

Or craft a few small maps out of paper and call it a day. If you want to explore it can be a pain to build land marks every few hundred meters. Sure there are already plenty of solutions to many of the problems we have. Keep falling while building sky scrapers? Be more careful. Or now you can hold shift to not fall off (most of the time). Hell, i used to use a bucket of water like a rope, swimming in it while building up high. Sure it's a challenging technique, but you have a lifeline if you fall.

That's not completely obsolete though, you can still swim in the stream to build down from a high place. But that doesn't mean that i don't want to be able to craft a harness with some leather and combine that with a fishing pole, then mount that to the ground and use that as a safety rope. (maybe use scroll or something to give more or less rope so you can adjust your altitude)

"Being able to place maps on walls WOULD be cool.. but.. hmmm.. maybe, I'll try to solve it.

Hope he fix it.

Let's see how this turns out. Once 1.6 comes out, maybe I can finally find my way back home... -_-
This? [http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Compass]
How often do you build stuff close to spawn?

maybe, but i get the feeling it is really expensive like some redstone surrounded by paper which means you will need 24 reeds. Thats 3 bookshelves
