its not hard to find your house again :p . just leave distinguishing features behind you, like bridges in between islands, or a few torches on mountains and cliffs.

Definitely would be useful if you can use them to view your current location while lost somewhere underground or building tunnels for a set area, but can't keep your barings topside.
lol use a compass. and if your house or other things arent visible from your original spawn, build an above ground bridge, or mine cart track.

a compass i even good for underground exploring, i got stuck, aimed towards my spawn, and dug an upward staircase. found my house in no time.

Alright.

Though it does kinda render the compass useless.
maybe, but i get the feeling it is really expensive like some redstone surrounded by paper which means you will need 24 reeds. Thats 3 bookshelves
lol its not hard to obtain either redstone or reeds :/

when farming reeds, take the top 2 blocks and plant them, then let all 3 grow, repeat for each of them, and it only takes less than a day cycle to grow each one i think.

as for red stone i have a whole double chest full of it :p

Awww, now I'll have to find something else to do with all my dirt instead of building pillars into the sky box so I can always spot my way home.
Build a hobbit city? I mean I have so much dirt I have been looking into building volcanoes.

Player created books eh? I could make a minecraft diary.

Day 7: Built a wall. Creepers blew it up. Damn creepers...
Make a diary and put it in a chest in a dungeon, someone finds it a long time after and BOOM RP sparks!

unless the compass can be used to show true north, then it'd be a little bit more useful in conjunction with the maps.

I do have to say though, I like the map idea. but what happens when you get to the edge? make a new one or does it scroll? and I wonder if there could be one to allow for underground maps, like tunnels and such. hmmmmmmmmm.....

This is going to be awesome for the Yogcast.
I imagine it will be like this.
Lewis: Simon, where's the map?
Simon: The what?
Lewis: The map -character here- gave us.
Simon: Oh that. I don't have it.

Meh, I can't imitate them that well.
Simon: Balls to it Lewis, balls to it.

Finally! I don't care if this won't be in until 1.9, I just want some bloody map in the bloody game. Really, that's the one essential feature the game lacked, and it took this long?
In this case, 'finally' means before the game is out of beta.

Notch receives the same payment as the employees. The rest of their money are piling up inside some bank account where they can take money out whenever they need it.
So why was I quoted in that text? I never said anything about his pay check.
I'm not quite sure... I was tired.

Depends a bit on the building requirements for the 'map'. Might be it takes a lot longer to get the resources for a map than a compass.

Though to be honest, I suspect map will just be like, ink + leather or something.
The compass will still be very useful. For one, Nethergates could easily take you outside of the map-area. Same if you move long distances underground. Also, it will always be useful to quickly be able to get the right direction home. Maps will be useful, but compasses will still be more essential. To always be able do find your spawn-point (or start point, now that we have beds) is essential.
And I'm guessing you'll have to use paper, not leather to make the map
