Nah, you missed the part where the Americans were pissed because they needed to pay some taxes to help the British recoup the costs of defending their butts in the French and Indian war, and they got mad at the prospect of having to pay people for services rendered. Seriously, I'm an American and even I know that's what happened. You know what else? It's not just our revolution that was based on not wanting to pay people. You see, we were the China of the 18th century when it came to copyright. We didn't have our own copyright or patent office, and we didn't recognize those of other countries. Hell, that's why the industrial revolution came to America: someone stole the plans to a patented machine from England and brought it to America, where he couldn't get in trouble for it, but could make a crapton of money. And now /we're/ the most anal IP enforcers on the planet. Makes sense.Lunncal said:*sigh* This is what happens when you start messing with the internet, and cracking down on freedom of speech and information. There's even at least one relatively large site out there that is blocking American IPs now, out of fear. I really hope things don't get any worse, the USA could screw up the greatest invention of the 20th century for everyone, and all out of some misguided sense of greed.
This is the best summary of the colonisation of America/the American Revolutionary War ever. I'm not even kidding.TrilbyWill said:we tried that before. then you called our monarch a shitlord[sup][citation needed][/sup] and shot us in the faces. personally, i think America was just a British plot to get rid of all the annoying-ass Puritans who were cramping our styles that got out of hand.EHKOS said:Ok, it's time for the UK to step in and take over the US. I'm sorry, but we're going to have to detain you without trial.Adam Jensen said:This is what internet is going to look like in a few years if "land of the free" had their way
Oh shit, was this image copyrighted?
A lot of people, it seems.fenrizz said:I just realised that these are not torrent sites.
Who are these people that do no use torrents in this day and age?
Simply baffeling...
a guy in the UK is about to get sent to the states for "just linking to illegal contetn"; so explain that.Istvan said:They're just linking to content that links to illegal content, not actually hosting it.TheDarkEricDraven said:Godsdamn it, so that's why I couldn't download thatporntasteful art film.
DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMN YOU FBI!
Why, though, is the Pirate Bay still legal? Why is that a thing?
THERE WERE DEDICATED SITES TO PASS OUT FREE PRODUCTS, AND THOSE SITES WERE JUST SHUT DOWN.Sandytimeman said:Note in the OP's topic that he said in the first file uploading site that you could only download files you upload personally. That seems fine to me there and their are dedicated sites for backups (also DVD's or Raid 1 for hard copy backups)TheDooD said:OK what if said sites were used for sending out somebodies OWN products and or used to back up files. So what then, what if they didn't want to charge people for their product.ResonanceSD said:Sites that hold copyrighted material get taken down. Why is this a big deal? You want the content, pay for it.
As far as distributing your own works, well that does get a bit trickier. I would suppose that if the demand is big enough a dedicated site will emerge that does just that. Hosts people's original works for distribution. That's how the free market works, if they can make money off it mind you.
Also I'm sure if they were looking for distribution money wise they could easily get on iTunes or Amazon. (shit I've had two different series of podcast on iTunes before)
Who is "They"? Nobody came for anyone except MegaUpload. Then the only after a two year investigation did MegaUpload get shut down. On top of that a good bit of the things they went after MegaUpload for were not even copyright/piracy related.MrDeckard said:This is fucking ridiculous.
Both what happened to the sites AND the people here who aren't mad about it.
Even if you are against all downloading, legal or otherwise, get mad about the principle. You realize they could do the EXACT same thing to Youtube and every other video or media site on the net for the same reasons.
This also seems relevant:

Possible Godwin's Law or melodramatic violation, but the point still stands; Stop this shit NOW before they get to the stuff YOU care about.
So they went Al Capone on Megauploads ass?Xanthious said:First off, these other sites aren't being "shut down" they are just reacting like a bunch of scared sheep. As best I can tell the US has only shut down ONE site recently, MegaUpload. Even then that was after a TWO YEAR nvestigation and a good bit of what they busted MegaUpload for wasn't even about piracy. They were doing all sorts of shady things over there.
Or add "with" before FileSonic, and add another comma after "Now". Also, putting "officially" between "has" and "begun" creates a variation of a split infinitive, another grammatical pothole. I think the best way to rewrite the thread title would be:thenumberthirteen said:Though really that comma shouldn't be there. Maybe a semi-colon, but I'm rarely 100% sure of their use. A better sentence would be "Now it's Filesonic, and so the witch hunt has officially begun." Commas are commonly misplaced to denote a pause, but they should't be used in this situation without an "and", "but", "therefore", etc.rutger5000 said:The title of this thread made me believe it was about incorrect English. Honestly learn some propper grammar. My English is far (very) far from perfect, but I at least give it a serious attempt:
Now it's Filesonic, the witch hunt has officially begun.
This is more like, "They came for the copyright infringers, but I did not speak up because I was not a copyright infringer. Then they came for more copyright infringers, and I still didn't speak up because I still wasn't one. And so on and so forth".MrDeckard said:This is fucking ridiculous.

Basically this. There are shows I watch over the Internet because they aren´t available here.Makhiel said:I don't know about others but I mostly download TV shows. As far as I am aware there is no legal way for me to be able to watch the next episode of, say, Fringe other than a) moving to US b) waiting a year or more while hoping that one of the local channels decides to buy the show and dub it.ResonanceSD said:Sites that hold copyrighted material get taken down.
