While mages are my favorite class to play, I HIGHLY recommend you start off with a melee character. Mages are great and all but they cannot take much of a hit until later on when you start being able to enchant clothing with powerful shielding spells. A melee-focused character is the easiest entry point into the game world, allowing you to get used to how the world works with a simple character before you start trying the more interesting, and more difficult, playstyles.

2 tips for ya:

1. Turn difficulty down. Levelling in Oblivion is notoriously broken.

2. Don't just follow the main story - wander off into the middle of nowhere and see what you find, or talk to people in the towns for side quests. That's where the real rewarding stuff in Oblivion happens.

I can't seem to gripe melee though. I allways get knoked back and getting up close and personal with some of dem monstas creeps me out. Also, you can summon stuff. I NEED some sort of follower/friend with me in this kind of game.

So I bought Oblivion friday (late to the party, I know) because I was looking forward to Skyrim without ever playing a Elder Scroll game. I figured I'd check it out before I paid for Skyrim.
In short, I hate it. The combat is wierd. Why don't enimies has health bars? And whats up the with leveling system? I don't get expirience from killing things? You're telling me I can level up by increasing my acrobatics skill 10 times?
And why is it SO hard? I'm at the FIRST Oblivion gate! It's impossible. I got there at level 2 (because it's the second fukin mission) and now I'm level 4 and still can't come close to beating it. I have a iron bow and steel arrows, and a "fine steel longsword" I'm Aprentice in Archery and Blade. Why do people like this game? I think it will be the first game I give up on due to difficulty in years. Atleast I only spent $20 bucks on it.
Edit: Hey guys, thanks for all the replies. I was going to give another shot anyway, but for sure I'm going to lower the difficulty. Apparently archery sucks and or requires too much stratgie. I'll still to my blades and forget about archery all together. Does anyone know if there is a follower that could help me out this early?
played it too could not stand it i like fallout better but i will give skyrim a try
I also like Fallout, so I just presumed I'd like Oblivion. So far my main gripe is the auto scailing enemies, and what seems to be a empty world.
i find it boring annoying and hard to level because it doesent even explain how to

If you grab the Fighter's Stronghold [http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Fighter%27s_Stronghold] DLC, you're a simple fight (with allied NPCs) away from having some knights to follow you around, though you can only ever have 1 follower at once.

You're getting knocked back because you're attacking when they're blocking, turn the tables on them and hold down the block button, wait for their attack to bounce off your shield/weapon, then attack while they're staggered.

Though if you're so inclined, you could make a custom class that's mostly melee focused, but includes Conjuration magic. If you take Conjuration as a class skill then Summon Skeleton will be instantly added to your spell list, and you can get better summons later on, and as a mage I can vouche for how useful it is to have an extra blade on hand.

Sounds like a good idea to me.

Even though I only just started replaying the game, I have played the intro so many times now that I honestly cannot remember how well done it is in terms of this.
Lucky for you that there is this thing called the Internet eh?
Seriously though, follow the same advice as the OP and give the game another try. Or, if you, unlike Will, are playing on PC, you could try that XP mod. Never used it myself, or knew it existed, but it might help you out.
Will: I won't tell you what class to play, but if you do want to play a mage, you could focus on Conjuration, that would allow you to summon critters AND armour/weapons. Not sure how easy those types of spells are to find, though.
Mind you, there really isn't anything to stop you skipping the main quest for now, heading to the nearest town, and getting started on the Mages Guild quests. That is where you will find people selling spells, and once you get into the University, will let you make your own spells.
You will also want to level Mysticism (I think?) so that you can get some decent soul catching going on, which is another fairly complex aspect of the game, in that you have to (successfully!) cast Soul Trap on a creature, have that spell active on the creature as it dies, and have an empty Soul Gem capable of storing that creatures soul. The filled gems are used to create and recharge enchanted items.

I think I heard somewhere that Beth is working on Fallout 4, although I doubt they have much more then the location and the factions. Presuming the runmor was real in the first place.

Turn down the difficulty, the game can be a bit unbalanced so just turn it down, it will make it more enjoyable.
Also you do get experience from a lot of things, including killing things, that's as long as the skill for whatever weapon you're using is a major skill of yours.
yeah, pretty much this man.

My motto is and has always been, "Never sacrifice fun for anything."
Fun will always win for me. I don't care is I look like a pussy, turning down the difficulty on the 5th mission of Black Ops, I would rather have fun than beat something that pisses me right off.

Your first problem was following the main storyline. Fuck that shit. I don't really see why Bethesda bothered to put it in the game, it wouldn't be lacking anything if it was removed.

Probably shouldn't jump into the campaign right away. If you need help go do some sidequests or join a faction. Level yourself up a little, or just turn the difficulty down.

The problem with leveling up in Oblivion is that the game expects you to know from the start what skills you're going to use the most, so if you start the game over and set your characters skills to match what you've been using the most, you should be in better shape.

My brother made the note that while in stealth, if you shoot an arrow at someone's neck, then they may, after a moment, say "Huh...must have been the wind."

However, I will note the irony: Based on the amount of damage arrows do, I don't blame the NPC for thinking that.

A friend of mine was saying the same thing yesterday!

He's an archer, so I told him to learn better shield and summon spells.

I hate Oblivion! I wanted to play a archery character with NO magic at all. Couldn't do it. I couldn't kill anything! I don't like magic or stealth, I just want to play with fairly realistic weapons. Just quit and play Fallout 3 instead. I could go through fallout 3 with nothing but small arms, although a few things were a bit hard.

Really? I always found Oblivion piss easy. I can plough through questlines in hours without dying at all.
An easy kind of character to play, I found, is a stealthy one. Have a class that's good with blade, sneak and security, finish the Dark Brotherhood questline and make sure to get all the bonus rewards, wear the Black Hand robes and use either Sufferthorn or the Blade of Woe, all of which you'll get along the questline, and you're pretty much a walking death machine.
And make sure you have a lot of lockpicks on you all the time. You'll be screaming in your head if you end up at a locked door you need to get through and have no lockpicks.
