While I love the game, there admittedly ARE a lot of things about it that are ridiculously unbalanced, which is a shame, and I hope they work on those issues for Skyrim.

Use "uesp wiki" (unoffical elder scrolls pages)

It helps you with basically anything you don't know about such as quests and glitches that have prevented you from doing certain things...

It also has a page of glitches and exploits to make the game a lot easier but that sucks the fun out.

When you get the hang of the game you can make a great character and play on default and still have barrels of fun :)

ok first off Oblivion is an amazing game once you get into it, getting into it is not easy but heres a few tips
1. screw the main questlines for awhile, explore, get into a few guilds, stab a hobo in the back, kick some ass in the arena, do whatever you want.
2. be prepared to ditch your first character build, especially if this is your first Elder Scrolls experience, your going to get to a point and say "why the hell did i put (useless hateful skill) in my top 7!" but by then youll know the game much better and be prepared to make a character thats more suited to you.
3. just remember that this is a huge game world you get to explore so so do it in your own way. there's a ton of stuff to see and do and the game lets you do it all in the way you want. not much for stealth? then grab a battle axe and just run straight in. not one for fireballs? get a sword, or even better start hurling lightning bolts and summoning skeletons. play the game in your own way.
4. Join the Dark Brotherhood :)

People have been talking about dealing with the level scaling, and I would like to point out that you can choose to never sleep, and therefore your level will never go up. It might be a ***** in early levels if you don't have a way to restore you health, but if you just abuse that starter healing spell until you can get something more beefy, you can just never sleep. Even after leveling your major skills 90 times, if you never sleep, you will never level up. The down side is that no loot will scale with you either, so don't expect to see anything cool on enemies for a while.

One thing to consider while making a character is the Atronach star sign. It seems caster oriented, and it might be a little abusive to noobs since it removes your ability to mana regen, but it also completely negates 50% of all spells cast on you. That's an advantage (especially in Oblivion) that any character class can take advantage of. I used it early levels to play "Mirror's Edge" in Oblivion. I'd run past everything, and even jump off the sides of towers if I needed to as if I was playing Mirror's edge. 50% of all spells wouldn't damage me, and I could heal myself as I ran because when the spells hurt, I'd have the absorbed mana to continue healing and running.

Lower the difficulty and join a few guilds. Eventually you'll get the hang of it and be ready to increase the difficulty again.

You can only enchant Armor/Clothing with one effect.
You can put multiple effects on weapons/spells.
Really? Even with weapons I've noticed the options for enchantments disappearing once I selected one...maybe I'm misremembering and/or my game is bugging on me.
Really.

Though, it's possible that you possible hit the button to remove the existing enchant when trying to add a second.

Lol, I'm one of the few people who loves vanilla Oblivion I guess.

I hate the mods.
*High Fives*

The only thing i would like more for the vanilla version is if the spells looked more unique.

Good thing that's gonna be better with Skyrim

...Is this...is it real?

1. The enemies have health bars, it's that curved line above your crosshairs.

2. You level up from your class' main skills. Select something with the skills you intend to actually use as primary skills. It's not experience for killing things, since when does bashing a dude to death teach you how to raise the dead? It's how often you use the skill that levels it up.

3. Bows and arrows are recognised to be the trickiest weapons. If you want a cakewalk load up a mage.
This. Oblivion wasn't as good as Morrowind, but it's far from a bad game. You JUST picked it up, don't understand things yet, and there is a learning curve. Not to mention it follows the school of thought of "Learn or die." It's challenging, as it should be.

Only thing I'd recommend is downloading one of the many mods to fix stat progression on leveling. The old system had a major issue of shoehorning you into skilling shit you won't use just to get the max stat bonus. (A system that isn't a problem at your level, but higher gameplay rears it's ugly head as suddenly shit caves your face in)

Check the wiki. The fist time players section is really helpful (even if you are not a first time player) http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:First_Time_Players

Also, I have put over 150 hours into the game before I got around to doing the main quest.

Not to be insulting but really? Oblivion, hard? Morrowind is hard you try to conquer dungeons at level 1 oblivion can be hard only if you pick bad main attributes ( which you probably did )

Oblivion is great, keep at it, man up, eventually switch it to hard or so, have fun or don't play games brah. Well okay I was too harsh, if you are not a gaming "expert" of 10+ years I can somehow slightly consider considering Oblivion as challenging at first... maybe.

You should murder a random person in the game and then sleep. Wonderful things will happen! =D
LOL I think it takes a couple random murders for the wonderful things to happen. You get the message that someone notices what you are doing or something...

OP I suggest restarting and follow one of the character guides*. when you first start and get out of the sewers, you could ignore the main questline and do some dungeon crawling. directly across the river from the prison sewer exit is Vilveran and its a good one to go and visit, plus you get an item thats used in a side quest there. Doing that gives you time to get used to the controls, collect some better armor than what was found in the sewers and LOOT EVERYTHING thats not nailed down and sell it. early on getting gold is very very slow. once that dungeon is completly cleared and fully looted is a good time to start on side quests. I went and did the fighters guild first then did the mage guild.

excelent guide is http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Main_Page And they have a great map thats quite usefull too: http://www.uesp.net/maps/obmap/obmap.shtml

Really, they're both pretty easy. A mage can do anything in Morrowind by like level 4 (and theoretically level 1 with the right build, although by the time you got all your stuff going you would probably already have dinged) and can make basically everything in Oblivion trivial with illusion.

If you're playing the PC version, I suggest, foremost, to install the OblivionXP mod. It makes it so the levelling system IS based on killing things instead of skill-grinding. It really made the game better for me.
Stopped playing Oblivion for almost two years, just started again yesterday on a whim. Did not know this mod existed, if it did I wouldn't have stopped playing. Skill grinding is an uncommon brand of hell I wouldn't wish on the worst RPGs out there.

As for the main quest, don't bother with it until you are at least level 10, depending on your class. Get mods, lots of mods. Mod the hell out of the game, vanilla is too boring.

You're approaching it in the completely wrong way.
And yes, the leveling is broken. You need good equipment in good shape, you need to have selected the attributes you WILL use all the time and taken race bonuses and penalties into consideration. Its not a game you just jump into, you gotta think about it some. Also: if its too hard, LOWER THE DIFFICULTY.

Also: use the UESP wiki. It will help you.

And just be happy it isn't Morrowind you bought. If you think OBLIVION is hard, then Morrowind will make you cry like a baby.

Don't make the mistake of abandoning the main questline and powerleveling. Then you will really learn what it feels like to be out of your depth. Stick with it, if it gets too hard turn the difficulty down.
Actually, if you want to be a real cheesemonkey in Oblivion, you do what I did: take all the magic skills as your main skills. (I like Bretons as mages, personally.) Then proceed to run around with weapons very slowly beating up all the crappy low-level monsters. Do lots of side quests, particularly the ones that drop specialized loot. Get into the Mage's Guild. Make your own spells. Power-level yourself to level 12 or so by casting spells over and over and over and over. Go do all the Daedra prince quests.

Congratulations, you're now a god.

DON'T DO THE MAIN QUEST!! Like ever!

I've had this game for years on PC and 360 and have still never done the main quest all the way through except once... because it's literally the worst part of the entire fucking game!

Rant over. Oblivion isn't a bad game it's just hard to get into and a complete failcake of a RPG system. Luckily, I heard that Skyrim will be using something more similar to Fallout 3/New Vegas with perks and stuff (not sure about SPECIAL)

Only complaint I had about Oblivion were the voice actors and the feeling that the world was very empty and dead. Preferred M&B's world, medieval, dynamic, blah blah blah. If you have it on PC sir, make sure to get a few mods.

#4. Unique Landscapes ... sure the world might be empty .... but those dude/dudettes behind the mod ... are gifted!
