I like South Park as a show, it probably won't work as a game. An RPG no less.

Maybe it will just be a VERY long interactive south park episode, and thats the only way this could possibly (barely) work

If you think about it the episodic content of South Park makes it a perfect setting for an open world RPG.

There could be an overarching storyline like the completely awesome South Park movie, while there are tons of sidequests based on individual episodes. If they included over-the-top violence and gore like some episodes have it will work well.

In addition to the iconic town there could be a Canada zone, a Hell zone, the Rainforest, Imagination Land, etc etc. They have 15! years of content to draw from, the possibilities are tantalizing and unlike LotR or even Star Wars the highly desirable 18-25 demographic grew up with the show.

Actually South Park would also make a bloody good MMO.

And there damn well had better be Bat Dad in it.

If Matt and Trey are heavily involved it could be pretty good. They're fairly big gamers as far as I know, so hopefully they'll make it good. I have no idea what it'll be like, but I'm cautiously optimistic.

Do not want, do not care. Southpark stopped being funny a long time ago and I don't see the point in making it into an RPG (of all things, an RPG; WTF?). Also, why Obsidian? They've just started to suck a bit less, why waste time and talent on a cash-in like this?

Ok, I admit, I'm hardly being objective here. But it just bugs me, I can't help it. A studio with the potential to grow into what Bioware used to be before EA took it over is wasting itself lately. Dungeon Siege 3 was their first stable and polished release, but it was a bland and dull game. Now they're making a has-been show into a game and I don't see why. Well, somebody is paying them, obviously. But still, kinda rubs me the worng way...

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?

How did this sound like a good idea?
I'm guessing there were about 100 million good ideas written on a check, and something about some game bla bla South Park something something... who cares :p

I suggest they get Peter Molyneux in on this and really get some shit started.

Then that should be made as a Visual Novel, not a game. And since that medium scantly exists in the western world, guess it's going to have to be a game.

I'm intrigued. Obsidian making it, but not writing the script? Unlikely to buy, but still... intrigued.

Simpsons game, simpsons hit and run.... uuuuh.... .Hack//sign.. no, wrong way round.

Okay, the hope is there, but you've got to look at it through the corner of your eye or the act you looking at it will cause it collapse in on itself.

On the one hand, it's Obsidian, so it should be great. On the other hand, it's a South Park RPG. A South Park RPG. I have mixed feelings about this.

On the one hand, it's Obsidian, so it should be a buggy piece of garbage. On the other hand, it's a South Park RPG. So... if it were being made by almost anybody else, I'd definately have bought it.
Heh. It could only have been better if they were the first and second posts.

OT: I honestly don't give a crap about this news. I'm not a big fan of South Park, but I think it's a good show. I also know that Obsidian is responsible for some quality titles, but I know that even the best of them have been buggy out the bum. I am extremely apathetic.

...oh hey, I rounded out the responses.

i think that if this was skewed away from the typical rpg, and more like an adventure game with legitimate choices that affect the game, this could legitimately work out, and with the greater freedom afforded by the art style and with the developers behind it, i honestly think this could work out, and i don't even watch south park

Can I follow with that?

Hey Obsidian, I love you guys, my favortie game ever is NWN2, MotB.

OT: Put me down as cautious on this issue. I don't know how well it would work, but I'm willing to entertain the idea that it could be good.

I'm not into South Park, but the Obsidian fanboy in me is just excited to get another game from them.

Strangely enough, there is a metric shit-ton of potential to this idea. Bearing in mind the many styles of humor in South Park and the sheer ridiculousness of much of the shit that happens in the show, this wouldn't need to be a monotonous adventure by any stretch. Also considering that this is Obsidian we're talking about, which releases really damn good (albeit buggy) games, we've got something that could be downright badass.

Is it just me or has obsidian entertainment actually never come up with an idea of their own?

Knights of the Old Republic 2
Neverwinter Nights 2
Fallout: New Vegas (That's the 5th game, by the way)
and now south park?

Could be fun to try, but I don't have that much faith in this game to be honest. Feels about as fitting as that Family Guy MMO there was talk about a while ago. ._o

I get really mixed feelings from this. South Park + RPG just doesn't feel or sound right. It is somewhat reassuring to hear that Obsidian is making it, and that Trey Parker/Matt Stone are behind the script and what not.

This'll be interesting, hopefully it's not just a quick cash sell out. I think it actually has some potential to pretty decent!
