Haha, they should hire you, because who actually wrote it is terrible and boring.camazotz said:Just imagine if it had been a character-focused reveal in which Iceman breaks up with Kitty (assuming adult Iceman) or gets into a conflict with X-23 because she comes onto him and he freaks out (young iceman) after Angel (the guy he's really attracted to) walks in on them... and harsh words are spoken. He takes off, and in a myriad series of adventures lands in the lap of some noteworthy supervillain who is also revealed as gay (such as-say--Sabertooth or someone equally outrageous). Realizing a level of peace not felt in his meager teen life, Iceman works to reconcile his new identity with this discovery...and realizing he needs to embrace who he is, rather than risk letting the secret eat him up like it did (insert villain here) until all that's left is bitter resentment and anger at the world.Baresark said:EARTHSHATTERING! Here is the thing: I don't think anyone is surprised by anything Marvel does these days. If anything, they most likely found the most boring way to do this.
Instead we got an issue devoted to Jean Gray mind raping Iceman and outing him without his permission, or even his realization.
Because this and "big events" are what passes for news in the comics industry, regardless of whether it sticks or not.SlumlordThanatos said:And why is this newsworthy?

Given Iceman's been Bi in comics since the 90's and pretty much all the fan backlash is that it's bi-erasure, I'm afraid you ma have inaccurately predicted an event from 8 months ago.Xsjadoblayde said:I have a funny feeling a lot of straight fans (and people that shouldn't even care) are not going to be quiet about this. Have you not heard? Sexuality is becoming considered a fluid trait for some. So he could change as many times as he wants. Plus, people do have desire changes in real life. I guess nobody likes change, no matter what it is.CaptainMarvelous said:Given Iceman's been Bi in comics since the 90's and pretty much all the fan backlash is that it's bi-erasure, I'm afraid you ma have inaccurately predicted an event from 8 months ago.
So no points for you.

It's no more sensationalist then when they do a "X Hero Dies" campaign. Or "Wolverine gets his adamantium ripped out" campaign they did. It's shaking up the established storylines to try and encourage more sales. This isn't anything new, it's just a different flavor of it for a different time.hermes200 said:Because this and "big events" are what passes for news in the comics industry, regardless of whether it sticks or not.SlumlordThanatos said:And why is this newsworthy?

Remember when DC make a big deal of making "an important character" gay? It was even discussed in the big picture [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/the-big-picture/5810-The-New-Green]. Then it turned out the "important character" was a version of Green Lantern that has not been prominent in the last 50 years...
Hah! Brilliant. That was ripe and begging to be picked. How did that pass by my radar? Eyes doth wool covered too much!Corey Schaff said:Nah, Iceman can't have a fluid sexuality. He's not Waterman <.< *badumtshh*
Wonka video aside though, Bi-erasure is kindof a legit social problem. I can name a solid 10-11 gay comic characters off the top of my head but I'm struggling to think of many bisexual ones who haven't been retconned into being straight or, like Iceman here, just out and out gay.Xsjadoblayde said:Have you not heard? Most astute, yes that is what I was saying. The "death" of Wolverine happens so often and is always just lame hype it's hardly noteworthy. And the coming out of a gay Iceman is more noteworthy. I wasn't trying to say it wasn't. I was saying it wasn't an apt comparison. I was specifically saying they WEREN'T similar. One was indeed a bigger deal than the other... that was my point exactly.Pluvia said:Which means this is a bigger change to a major character than a previous one which was also news worthy.Kyrian007 said:Not really, because Wolvie has "died" again and again and again... and somehow he's always coming back somehow. Not exactly sure the comparison to Bobby's coming out is apt... not sure that can happen as many times as Wolverine has "died."
So basically you just pointed out how much bigger this is than Wolverine dying, even though Wolverine dying was newsworthy.
I see your point, i have been fortunate enough to not have come across that before. Though do you honestly believe that this is their intention? To wipe any evidence of bisexuality from our media? It feels like a matter of perspective in this case. I would hope a comic writer would not hold such malevolent ambitions.CaptainMarvelous said:Wonka video aside though, Bi-erasure is kindof a legit social problem. Your right nobody likes change but there's kindof a bit more behind the jimmies rustled by this story.
I don't believe it's their intention but it is something they did, it's like you say, not being aware it's a problem kinda stops you being aware when you exacerbate it. Bendis (the guy who wrote that X-men arc) is generally a pretty upstanding dude and I think it was probably meant as an effort to be more inclusive for gay people, but the end result is a lot of bisexuals feel marginalised since it seems to be saying you can either be straight or gay. In-between is swept under the rug.Xsjadoblayde said:I see your point, i have been fortunate enough to not have come across that before. Though do you honestly believe that this is their intention?
